boxingBy Matthew Paras – In what was a great, competitive fight throughout, David Diaz (35-2-1, 17KOs) took the last three rounds he needed to beat Jesus Chavez (44-6, 30KOs) by scores of 95-95, 97-93, and 96-94. East Side Boxing had the fight 96-94 for David Diaz. The fight started off with Jesus Chavez taking advantage of David Diaz’s typical slow starts and his rust. Chavez did a good job of consistently throwing the right hand in the round, which David Diaz had no problem eating.

The next rounds faired better for Diaz as he was able to back Chavez up and land straight left hand leads plus uppercuts on the inside. The combination of these punches not only gave Diaz the advantage in rounds two through four, but it provided the fans with great action. Diaz and Chavez stood toe to toe, slugging it out and both trying to back each other into the ropes, looking to make a point.

Rounds five and six allowed Chavez to get back in the fight. In round five, Chavez had success with his bodywork and a right hand. He also continued his success in round six, when he stole the round after a bad accidental headbutt that cut Diaz over his right eye. Inspired by the sight of blood, Chavez jumped on Diaz..

Chavez was still able to be effective in round seven, where this time, he was able to back Diaz up when trading blows. Overhand rights, jabs, and hooks to the body allowed Chavez to be up in the fight after seven rounds.

Now, with the hometown crowd and ringside observers wondering if he could pull a decision win out, David Diaz needed the next three rounds to beat Jesus Chavez. And that’s what Diaz did. He stood toe to toe wearing Chavez down in the final and exciting rounds.

David Diaz edged the last rounds out by using his strengths that once made him the WBC Lightweight champion, his heart and strength.
