Tickets for Mayweather vs. Marquez go on sale on TODAY

LOS ANGELES, MAY 22 – On March 8, 1971, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali engaged in the “Fight of The Century”, a 15 round war that will forever be remembered in the annals of boxing history. On July 18th, Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez will do their best to create their own “Fight of The Century” for the new millennium. While the talent, determination and high stakes are all in place, there are even more parallels, as we can trace Mayweather and Marquez to Frazier and Ali..

How, you might ask?

Floyd Mayweather fought Oscar De La Hoya, who fought Hector Camacho, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard, who fought Thomas Hearns, who fought Iran Barkley, who fought Trevor Berbick, who fought Larry Holmes, who fought Muhammad Ali, who fought Joe Frazier.

Juan Manuel Marquez fought Manny Pacquiao, who fought Oscar De La Hoya, who fought Bernard Hopkins, who fought Roy Jones Jr., who fought John Ruiz, who fought Evander Holyfield, who fought Mike Tyson, who fought Larry Holmes, who fought Muhammad Ali.

Nine degrees of separation…or the precursor to a historic night?

A MEXICAN ICON LOOKS TO ADD TO HIS LEGEND ON JULY 18TH

TICKETS FOR MAYWEATHER VS. MARQUEZ: “NUMBER ONE/NUMERO UNO” GO ON SALE TOMORROW, FRIDAY, MAY 22!

LOS ANGELES, MAY 21 – For years, Juan Manuel Marquez toiled in the shadow of fellow countrymen Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, even though boxing aficionados knew just how good the Mexico City native was. A world featherweight title still didn’t allow Marquez to break through, but beginning in 2007, “Dinamita” finally got his chance to shine on the world stage, and in the last two years, he has proven to be the best of Mexico’s revered trinity.

In his last five bouts, Marquez has scored emphatic victories over Barrera, Rocky Juarez, Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz, with the only blemish in that span bring a highly controversial split decision defeat to Manny Pacquiao that many ringside observers scored for Marquez. The wins over Casamayor and Diaz saw him issue these world champions their first ever defeats by knockout, and with the win over Diaz, he earned a world title in a third weight class.

On July 18th, Marquez will look to add to his legend by defeating Floyd Mayweather for pound for pound supremacy. A victory will be yet another historic chapter in the career of a future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever to lace up a pair of gloves.

Mayweather/Marquez: A Mayweather Family Affair As “Mexicutioners”

LOS ANGELES, MAY 20 – Though younger boxing fans may know renowned trainer Roger Mayweather only for his stellar work in the gym and the corner of his nephew, pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather, Roger initially made his reputation in the fight game as a two-division world champion whose ability to take foes down earned him the nickname “The Black Mamba.”

Roger Mayweather also had another nickname, “The Mexicutioner,” which he earned his victories over some of the top Mexican fighters of the 80’s. This tradition has been picked up by Floyd Mayweather, who has gone 7-0 with 4 knockouts against natives of Mexico. Add in the fighters he has defeated of Mexican descent, including Oscar de la Hoya and Genaro Hernandez, and that may spell bad news for the man he’s fighting on July 18th, Mexico City’s own Juan Manuel Marquez.

But just as Julio Cesar Chavez broke Roger Mayweather’s streak, Marquez hopes to break Floyd Mayweather’s this summer.
