Suge Green’s…Boxing Notebook

Shane MosleyBy Suge Green: January 25th, 2009 – Another example of the more technically proficient fighter fighting the perfect fight, similar to Hopkins vs Pavlik. Many of us may have called the Sugar Shane (wait a minute wasn’t he the underdog ?) victory Saturday night, but who expected it to be in such devastating fashion, and so quickly (9th rd stoppage) ? Sugar Shane Mosley is a major player again, holding a World belt now in the division that is the heart of boxing in this era. At this point the potential welterweight matchups seem endless, for Shane in particular. Whether or not Ricardo Mayorga makes it by Angulo when they clash, Mayorga vs Antonio Margarito anyone ? This will be a classic, but who knows ? Cotto got a title shot in his first bout back, Margarito as the victor in their bout may consider himself worthy of an immediate title shot as well.

Joe Calzaghe is still undecided about a return to the ring in 2009, but he states that he doesn’t think the lofty goal of 50-0 is attainable.

The breakdown in negotiations late last week seemed to alarm boxing fans around the globe, when many news sources ran with the headline “Pac vs. Hatton is off.” It was obviously only posturing over financial details, as I stated On The Grind…”I have full confidence this fight comes off.” It has to. The people want it, the fighters want it, and the promoters and the network is all over it.

Expect an announcement of championship proportions soon from female fighter Maureen Shea, you’ll hear about it here when all is confirmed.

Laramie Wyoming, Elevation: 7500 ft. Temperature C.O.L.D. What would bring such a well know fighter on the comeback trail, to such a harsh and desolate territory? After all it seems more like the setting for one of his great uncle’s (western movie star John Wayne) movies, in fact Wyoming was the set of Wayne’s 1930 film The Big Trail. Tommy “The Duke” Morrison is making it clear he’s willing to go where he’s got to go, to get fights in 2009. He said his goal is to “become consistent,” with plans to fight more than once this year. We’ll see what happens when he faces local Wyoming heavyweight Corey Williams on the 31st.

Still no word on the potential “Battle of the ‘Nightmares.” The promoters have got to make Peter vs. Arreola happen. Chris claims to have wanted to fight Peter at one point, and Sam says he would like to fight him now. It has all the making of an all out slugfest, and also promises to have what should be a hilariously entertaining buildup.

In the world of “B-list beatdowns”, Jose Canseco battled Danny Bonaduce to a draw on a Celebrity Boxing Federation Card. Rematch…who knows ? The CBF’s last card did impressive numbers, it will be interesting to see if this one rivaled it with it’s price increase.
