ARNAOUTIS MOVES CLOSER TO TITLE SHOT WITH DOMINATING PERFORMANCE OVER ANKRAH

The Pride of Greece, “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis took one step closer to a title shot with a dominating performance over very game Ben Ankrah.

Arnaoutis came out fast, bouncing on his toes and using his jab to measure up the African Ankrah. The southpaw Arnaoutis began unleashing his vicious left hand early in the third round, but to Ankrah’s credit he just kept coming forward. By the middle of the fight it was apparent Arnaoutis was content on boxing and scoring from the outside against his much slower opponent. Arnaoutis connected with some thundering blows throughout the fight, at times rocking Ankrah, but Ankrah was able to make it to the final bell.

After ten rounds of excited action “Mighty” Mike was awarded a well-deserved unanimous decision, winning by scores of 100-90, 100-90, 96-94. Arnaoutis improves his record to 21-2-2, 10KO while Ankrah drops to 19-7-1, 9KO.

MADDALONE STOPS NELSON IN THRILLER

In the fight of the night Star Boxing’s heavyweight Vinny Maddalone (31-4, 22KO) stopped Terrell “Baby Bull” Nelson (8-7, 5KO) in the second round.

Maddalone who has been thrilling boxing fans since he first turned professional, did not disappoint the pro Maddalone crowd as he chose to fight Nelson in a phone booth from the start of the fight. The two exciting heavyweights traded bombs from the get go, each giving as good as they got in the opening round.

At the start of the second round Maddalone jumped all over Nelson as Nelson was still showing the effects of the first round. Maddalone landed enormous over hand rights and left hooks while Nelson laid on the ropes. With Nelson taking severe punishment, the referee jumped in and called a halt to the contest at :45 seconds of the second round.

Dynamic Maloney Duo See Action On Wigan Fight Card

Two of promoter Frank Maloney’s brightest prospects will feature in crucial support bouts on the undercard of the Bell vs. Haskins British title fight held on Friday, November 7 at Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England.

Rough and tumble northern welterweight Mark Thompson returns to the ring just three weeks after his most recent outing while featherweight dazzler Akaash Bhatia makes a rare appearance outside his London area environs.

The pair have each been impressive during their young careers, tallying 29 victories between them among 30 professional contests with Thompson earning the British Boxing Sportsman of the Year for his performance in the one loss, while Sikh boxer Bhatia caged the prestigious Sony Entertainment Television Asia Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2007.

Thompson, 17-1 (11), returns to the welterweight class after making his London debut in last month’s riveting firefight with Latvian light middleweight Gatis Skuja, in which the Heywood based battler became the first man to sweep every frame in a six rounder against the durable Eastern European.

In the opposite corner on November 7 will be Glasgow’s former Commonwealth title challenger Craig Dickson, 15-5-1 (8), looking to get back on track after dropping two contentious points rulings this year to budding star Michael Lomax.

Bhatia, 12-0 (3), makes his initial Manchester area foray against fellow Londoner Mark Callaghan, 19-14-1 (4), an ex-English super bantam titlist who holds wins over current European bantam champion Ian Napa and former British title challenger Sean Hughes while having held future European, British and Commonwealth champion Michael Hunter to a draw.

These bouts are critical crossroad clashes for Thompson and Bhatia, who must each look impressive against their seasoned opponents before they can move into domestic title fights in the coming year.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “The Explosive Thin Men”, featuring Andy Bell vs. Lee Haskins for the Super Flyweight Championship of Britain, supported by full undercard, at Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England on Friday, November 7, 2008.

Tickets are priced at £70 and £30 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508.
