21.07.08 – By Jaime Castro-Núñez, Photo: Courtesy of Jhon Romero/Cuadrilátero: WBA’s #2 rated contender César Canchila (26-1-0) of Cereté, Colombia, is refining his three-month preparation for his collision against favorite Giovanni Segura (19-0-0) this coming Saturday, July 26 as the undercard for “¡La Batalla!” / “The Battle!”, the pay-per-view extravaganza headlined by Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito at the MGM Grand Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
Canchila, who will battle for the WBA interim light flyweight, stated that “I’m ready!” I spoke with him after a workout session at Cuadrilátero gym, where he exercises under the supervision of Orlando Pineda and Álvaro Mercado..
Jaime Castro-Núñez: César, I’m happy to introduce you to the ESB readers…
César Canchila: It’s my pleasure!
JCN: Please, tell us who you are…
CC: César Canchila is a Colombian boxer, 26, very courageous, hard-hitting, and ready to face Giovanni Segura this coming July the 26th. It’s gonna be a tough fight, but I have the training, skills, and intelligence to defeat him.
JCN: Can you describe a normal day of training?
CC: My training regime includes trotting, vigorous speed mitt drills, muscular strengthening exercises and sparring. I wake up at 4:30 am and trot sixty minutes every day. Then I eat breakfast and take a rest. At 11:00 am I work out and by 3:00 pm I spar.
JCN: What’s your best argument to overcome Segura?
CC: My training!
JCN: And your weakness?
CC: Well, as a boxer you’re always learning. Sometimes my trainer makes emphasis on certain combinations that I don’t use as I should, you know, that’s life…
JCN: How’s your relationship with Pineda and Mercado?
CC: We’ve a very good one, they push me to the limit and I love it. If you wanna be a real champion you want a strict trainer, so you can get results. The environment here is positive, they trust me.
JCN: I’ve seen Segura many times and I can tell he’s talented. What do you know about him?
CC: I’ve studied some of his tapes, he’s skilled, tough, ambidextrous, hard-hitting, but as any other boxer he’s weakness and I’m gonna take advantage of them.
JCN: When are you flying to Vegas?
CC: On Tuesday morning.
JCN: Is there something else that you want to say to the ESB readers?
CC: I want to invite them to watch the spectacle because there will be a lot of good fights.
