George Ulrich: Perhaps one of the most physically gifted fighters of this generation, Zab “Super” Judah, is going to be working with the great Floyd Mayweather Sr. prior to his bout with “Sugar” Shane Mosley. It hasn’t been stated if Floyd will be working the corner for the fight, but he will be instrumental in the training of Zab. This is an intriguing development for Judah. For years his trainer has been Noel Judah, and perhaps that’s been his handicap. Sometimes you just have to realize there are limits to what you can do as a trainer..
Floyd Mayweather Sr. might be just what the doctor ordered. Zab has every physical talent there is. His speed is second to none and, he has power in spades in both hands when he sits down on a punch. When he throws combinations they come swiftly and with accuracy.
So why is it that he’s been beaten by lesser talent more than once in his career. In his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the first four rounds he appeared to be the faster of the two. Beating Floyd to the punch and getting the better of the exchanges, one has to wonder what happened. I hear from many fans and some writers that it’s all in Zab’s head. That mentally he’s not able to overcome adversity. I’ve also heard that it was his stamina that kept him from winning more than once. I personally believe it’s a combination of things. At 29 he’s supposed to be in his prime, so maybe it’s time to turn his career upwards.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. might be the answer to all of the questions surrounding Zab Judah, but he has to have complete control to be effective in getting in Zab’s head and pointing him the right direction in the ring. While some of us might not like Floyd Sr. we have to respect him as a trainer. It’s possible that having another voice in the gym giving him the push that he needs will swing the pendulum again for the once great talent. I hope it’s not too late, as Judah could go down as one of the saddest stories of unrealized potential in the history of the welterweight division.
I hope that Noel finally sees that Floyd Sr. can take Zab to the level a lot of us thought he was going to get to when he was 19-0. With the right training and conditioning, mental as well as physical, there are no limits to what Judah can do. He still has time to accomplish some great things starting with his fight with one of the best welterweights and shoe in hall of famer “Sugar” Shane Mosley. No one knows what the future holds for Judah, but perhaps a new voice in the gym is a move towards something better.
