Markus Beyer: “I will be world champion again!”

Former WBC super middleweight champion Markus “Boom Boom” Beyer will be back in action on March 14th in Munich. It will be his first fight under the banner of ARENA Box-Promotion. After losing to Mikkel Kessler in a title unification bout in October 2006 southpaw Beyer had to undergo surgery on his left hand. At that time there were rumours about the end of Beyer’s career..

“But I never retired”, states Beyer. “On the contrary I had that surgery done so I can resume my career and become world champion again. I am a three-time world champion – now I want to go for four! I still feel the fire burning inside of me.”

Beyer’s new promoter Ahmet Öner is convinced that his new superstar still got what it takes.

Öner: “I am very happy with this deal. Markus is one of the biggest German boxing heroes. And he is only 36 years old. He still has some good years to come. I will do my job and bring him back to the top of the ratings fast – which shouldn’t be too hard as he has proofed before that he is able to come back from a loss and win the belt again.”

Beyer and Öner don’t want to waste any time to bring “Boom Boom” back in championship position. Beyer: “My goal is a title fight in 2008.” To pursue this goal he changed his trainer. After 20 years with Uli Wegner Beyer is now working with ARENA’s young head coach Karsten Röwer.

Beyer: “We get along very well. Like me Karsten is very ambitious and hard working. Also it’s good to get some new ideas after working with the same coach for a long time. I’m still young enough to learn.”
