The Biofile Cory Spinks

By Scoop Malinowski: Status: IBF Super Welterweight champion.
Ht: 5-10 Wt: 154, DOB: February 20, 1978 In: St. Louis, MO
First boxing memory: Winning my first fight when I was 12. That went on my record. The first fight that I won I was 9. I remember my second fight I got disqualified because my cup was too big. You know those old cups you like button up the front? Like a jockstrap? I got disqualified for it [laughs]..

cory spinks Nicknames: Co, Co B, Cool C, Return of the Spinks Jinx.
Best fight seen: My dad – Olympic fight. (The gold medal match vs. Cuban Sixto Soria?) I like every one of them. And the Thrilla in Manila. The Rumble in the Jungle.

Childhood Heroes: My dad (Leon) and uncle (Michael).

Pre-fight meal: Pasta. Maybe like some red meat.

Hobbies/Interests: Play basketball, I like to bowl.

What kind of training do you do between fights (if any): The same thing, basic workout you do in the gym. Run at least three times a week.

Typical breakfast: Oatmeal, egg whites, banana.

Toughest part of being a boxer: Being away from your family.

Favorite music: I like mostly R&B, hip-hop.

Favorite TV Show: The Wire.

Last book read: I forgot the name. Video Vixen something (Confessions of a Video Vixen –
autobiography of hip-hop groupie Karrine Steffans).

Favorite film: Scarface, Matrix.

Favorite Meal: Crab legs.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Vanilla.

What car do you drive: A Hummer (sparkly gold).

First Car: Like a 1985 red Ford Escort.

Where do you train: Marquette Gym in St. Louis. I’ve also trained in Ohio, Florida and Colorado Springs.

Training routine: The basic – run in the morning. Go to the gym – maybe do a three-hour workout in the gym. Strength work at night.

Toughest man you faced: I couldn’t even tell you. Sorry, I couldn’t even tell you. I don’t even rate ’em. I had a lot of tough fights.

Greatest Sports Moment: Winning the undisputed world welterweight championship.

Most Painful Moment: Losing the rematch to Zab Judah in St. Louis.
If you weren’t a boxer, what would you be: I like computers. Computer technology. To fix them and everything.

Last place you went on holiday: I went to Hawaii in March. Honolulu.

Favorite football team: I root for the hometown team (St. Louis Rams). But my favorite football team is the New England Patriots. They always have a good defense. And a helluva quarterback – Tom Brady. He reminds me of a Joe Montana back in the 80’s, my old 49ers team back in the 80’s.

Best boxer in sport today: I wouldn’t even say that. Anybody can have a great night on any given day. It depends on who shows up that day. There’s some pretty bad ones out there. But I’m not rating ’em. Because you never know what will happen. This is a sport where you never know what happens.

Favorite Non-Boxing Spot: Basketball.

Favorite Boxers To Watch: Muhammad Ali. Bernard Hopkins I look up to a lot.

People Qualities Most Admired: A good appearance. Outgoing. I don’t like fake people. Be real.
