Raynell Williams Wins Gold at the Olympic Test Event in Beijing, China

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Featherweight Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) won his first international gold medal with a championship round victory over Arturo Santos of Mexico at the Olympic Test Event in Beijing, China on November 22. Lightweight Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.), heavyweight Deontay Wilder (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), and super heavyweight Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) all took home silver medals from the event..

Williams recorded his fourth victory of the tournament, winning a 31-22 decision over Santos to claim the gold. Ali lost a 30-17 decision to Serik Yeleuov of Kazakhstan in their championship bout and Hunter dropped a close 21-18 bout to Russia’s Denis Sergeev. Due to a shoulder injury, Wilder was unable to compete in final round action.

Following Test Event competition, the U.S. team traveled to Zunyi City for a dual event with China and Kazakhstan. Seven U.S. boxers recorded victories over Kazakhstan in the first night of dual competition. Williams continued his winning streak, recording a 22-8 decision over Galib Jafarov; light welterweight Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) won a 27-14 decision over Ashirov Darkhan; light heavyweight Christopher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.) took a 12-10 victory over Lei Yuping; Wilder stopped Khamazat Gelishkhanov in the third round of their contest and Hunter bounced back with an 18-9 win over Rustam Rygebayev. Light flyweight Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas) moved up to the flyweight division for the dual and lost a 25-14 decision to Olzhas Sattibayev. The team will return to the United States on Wednesday, November 28.
