Tribute to Aboriginal Boxing Hero Dick Blair

Show 70 of the Sweet Science weekly national radio program is to be dedicated to a tribute to the great Australian Aboriginal middleweight hero Dick Blair. Blair, originally Richard Phillips, was part of a fighting family of middleweight brothers from Fingal in Tweed Heads in NSW and after turning professional in 1964 he won the Australian middleweight title in 1968. Dick retired in 1975 with 85 bouts to his name and the impressive record of 46-31-5.. Notable opponents included Trevor Christian, Mick Croucher, Charkey Ramon, Trevor Thornberry and Jim Brown.

Dick celebrated his 70th birthday this year and is a respected elder of the Aboriginal community, splitting his time between Tweed Heads and Redfern where he is ordained as Pastor Richard Phillips.
