Scott Lawton Comes Home

Werrington lightweight Scott Lawton will return to a Potteries ring for the first time this year when he appears at Stoke’s Kings Hall on 17th November. Having fought for both British and Commonwealth titles this year, Scott faces Northampton’s Leonard Lothian who recently proved a tough challenge for Stafford’s Rob Hunt..

Lawton’s last outing was at Nottingham Arena last month when he faced boxing’s hottest prospect Amir Khan in a Commonwealth lightweight title clash. Despite failing to halt the Bolton fighter’s meteoric progress through the ranks Lawton was greeted by a tumultuous roar by 2000 travelling fans as he entered the ring sporting a Stoke City shirt.

After the bout the shirt was signed by both Scott and Amir Khan and was later returned to the Britannia Stadium. City subsequently held a competition for the unique shirt and Scott was invited to present it to the winner during the half-time interval of today’s game. 13 year old season ticket holder Jacob Toft won the competition.

The Ingles’ trained Lothian visits Stoke with a record of W 4 L 4 D2 with all ten bouts having been contested since March this year. Although coming off the back of three successive defeats, Lothian adopts the trademark Ingles style which will undoubtedly prove awkward for Lawton.

Lawton possess the class, the experience and the boxing brain to overcome the Northampton man and will be hoping to impress as he aims to rebuild his career after successive defeats to Jon Thaxton and Amir Khan.

“I got a fantastic reception from my fans in Nottingham,” said Lawton, “and I’m just disappointed that I couldn’t put on a better show for them on the night. I didn’t realise just how good Amir was until then but now having experienced what he can do first hand I can confirm that he is an extraordinary talent and that he will soon become a World champion.”

“That’s all behind me now and I am looking forward not backwards, Leonard Lothian is my next opponent and I am treating him with the respect that he deserves. I’ve trained for this fight as hard as I train for any fight and although I intend to beat Leonard next Saturday I won’t be taking anything for granted. After the support that I’ve received from the people of Stoke I am determined to give something back to them and put on a classic performance for them.”

Lawton is joined on a six fight card by rising star Jimmy Doherty who is now unbeaten in six professional starts. Werrington heavyweight Alex Ibbs makes his third entrance to a professional ring and will be seeking to maintain his 100% record. Scott Miller makes his pro record after recording 21 wins from 25 amateur starts and the talented Chester pair of Kevin Buckley and Chris Goodwin complete the line up.
