Liakhovich Impressive In Win Over Brewster

03.04.06 – By Geoffrey Ciani: After having shot the “Superbabes” episode of Seeking Madam Mushroom Saturday afternoon, I was in the mood to just sit back, pound some beers, and watch some boxing. Fortunately for me, there was a heavyweight title fight on that I had forgotten about; unfortunately for me, it was on Showtime. However, so determined was I to get a much-needed boxing fix, I decided it was about time I bit the bullet and ordered Showtime. Afterwards, I was thrilled by this decision..

As I sat back drinking beers at a sickening pace, I was in awe as a great fight began to unfold. Make no mistake, Relentless Lamon Brewster and Sergei The White Wolf Liakhovich put on an incredible display. Indeed, this was one of the best heavyweight brawls I’ve seen in a while. By the time the 5th and 6th rounds rolled around, it reminded me of the Golota-Bowe battles from ten years ago. This was a pleasant surprise.

Both fighters personified heart in this bout. Neither man had any quit in him, and whenever one fighter seemed to secure an advantage the other would immediately respond. At no point during this fight was I convinced that either man was slowing down. Just when it seemed Liakhovich was gaining an advantage, Brewster would dig deep; whenever Brewster seemed to take control, he would soon be silenced by Liakhovich. This was exactly the type of fight the heavyweight division needed, and these two warriors performed at an elite level.

Both men exhibited an awesome combination of heart, desire, skill, power, and chin. Brewster probably packed a bigger punch, and Laikhovich probably had more steam behind his punches, but these two warriors seemed very evenly matched. There were times where it seemed both men should have simply collapsed due to the brutal beating each was inflicting upon the other, but somehow, both men remained on their feet, despite being seemingly pretty wobbly on numerous occasions. The only knockdown in the fight came in the seventh when a vicious body-shot sent The White Wolf down to a knee, but the young fighter showed good recuperative powers.

Liakhovich ultimately clinched the fight for himself during the championship rounds. It was then that he finally began listening to his corner and using his superior boxing skills to his advantage, much like he had been doing earlier in the fight before the slugfest had ensued. Had Liakhovich listened to his corner earlier, he may have had a much easier time in there. However, he also may not have come across in an exciting fashion the way he did.

With the victory, Liakhovich becomes the new WBO champion and at just 29 years old, he appears to have set himself up for a bright future in the sport. Having now defeated the man whom many considered to be the best of the splintered champions, Liakhovic may be in line for some very good match-ups down the road, one of which might well be a rematch with Brewster.

As for Lamon Brewster, don’t count him out yet. He showed his warrior spirit in this fight and has nothing to be ashamed of. It’s always been known that Brewster can be out boxed, but the intangibles possessed by Brewster always give him a fighting chance, much like they did on Saturday night. Few fighters in the sport are more courageous and determined than is Lamon Brewster, and I suspect it shan’t be long before he’s back in the title mix.

Saturday night was truly a great night for boxing’s most prestigious division and I, for one, look forward to seeing more of these two pugilists.
