Euro Roundup: Gomez, Krajnc, Petcovic, more

28.12.05 – By Per Ake Persson: Former WBC cruiser champ Juan Carlos Gomez did, sadly, test positive for traces of cocaine in the two tests required by the German Federation, the BDB, after his bout with Oliver McCall October 15 in Duesseldorf. In this matter the BDB collaborates with a highly respected anti-doping center in Cologne headed by professor Wilhelm Schaenzer.. No word though from the BDB on a suspension or if the result has been changed thought. The fact that Gomez tested negative in California over two months later can probably not change anything.

Former WBO 160 lb champ Armand Krajnc is – as was reported earlier this fall – thinking about coming back. He has now made it public although no decision has been made. Krajnc, a fulltime trainer for amateurs in Malmo, Sweden, these days, weighs in at cruiser and a comeback could be at either 175 or 168. Armand has no doubt been inspired by Aasa Sandell´s fight against Laila Ali and the sudden Swedish – including TV – interest in professional boxing. An Ali vs Sandell rematch with Krajnc in a supporting bout could be pretty big in Sweden.

German cruiser Aleksander Petkovic takes on Frenchman Kamel Amrane in the headliner of Spotlight Boxing´s show January 24 in Hamburg. Ukrainian heavy Taras Bidenko and French jr welter Willy Blain are featured on the undercard.

Norwegian jr Geir Inge Jorgensen have turned down Spanish trialhorse Antonio Postigo as opponent January 13 in Torrevieja. “I´m 22-0 and don´t want to fight guys like this anymore” states Geir. The plan set for Norwegian promoter John Ruud is to have Jorgensen in a titlefight of some kind in March. Jorgensen is managed by Emanuel Steward but have spent the fall and early winter in Norway due to visa problems but expects to have that solved in the near future.
