28.09.04 – By Tony Nobbs: Australian boxing Golden Girl Sharon Anyos says she is physically and mentally in the best shape of her life in the lead up to Friday nights WBF Featherweight title fight with Texan Linda Tenberg at the Southport Sharks AFL Club on the Gold Coast. The thirty three year old local lass is making a welcome return to the Coast for the first time since 2001 and promises her home crowd supporters and viewers on Foxsport an “awesome performance” in what is the first ever female world title fight in Australia.
Admitting she knows little about her rival “except what I’ve got of the net” Sharon has this week been winding up her preparations, concerning herself on what she has to do to become a world champ for the second time.
“My training has been unreal! I’ve been sparring the boys at the Burliegh boxing Club. Greg Walker, the trainer there has been fantastic letting me work with his boxers. Before that I had a lot of work in Sydney at Team Fenech. My training has been different, we have been working on a lot of new things and really concentrating on my defence. I think the fans will
get a surprise at my overall improvement and see a completely different style of fighting”.
“Come Friday night, I’ve got a fair bit in stall for Linda Tenberg”.
A friendly nature out of the ring “The Wild Thing” doesn’t like getting close to her opposition on a personal level before a bout. Nor does she concern herself with tapes. “I know she is number five in the Super Featherweight rankings and her record but that’s about it. I don’t like to study my opponent as I want to concentrate on my own work and force her to fight the way I want to fight”.
“After the fight I will get to know her as a person, catch up and take her to breakfast”.
A pioneer of women’s boxing in this country Sharon has over the last few year tried to highlight the feminine side of the sport. “ It’s important to show the general public that we can be glamorous and still fight. That just because we fight we still take care of ourselves”.
A professional since 1998, Anyos (6-3, 1 KO) is a former Australian, OBA and WIBA title holder who has fought overseas on five occasions, in England, USA (2) and Japan (2).
After such a tough trail she is thrilled to be given valuable television exposure. “It’s fantastic for womens boxing. I wouldn’t be fighting on TV if not for Jeff Fenech and I want all of the Gold Coast and all my fans to either turn up to the fight or tune in and support us. I’m very excited and I want to thank all the people who got me here. They know who they are”.

There will be a press conference and dummy weigh-in at the Shooters Salon Bar in Orchid Avenue Surfers Paradise on Thursday at 1 pm.
