Graham Earl: “Murray Will Need A Chainsaw”

13.07.04 – British Lightweight Champion GRAHAM EARL believes challenger STEVE MURRAY will need a chainsaw to stop him when they face each other again on Friday 30 July at the York Hall. Earl cut down Murray, the part-time tree surgeon from Harlow, in two pulsating rounds last February and is aiming to finish the job even quicker this time.

The unbeaten Luton puncher said, “Murray will be out to prove that I was lucky and got him on an off night. But I will prove that I am the number one in the lightweight division by stopping Murray even earlier. I’m in great condition and on fight night Murray will need his chainsaw to stop me as I’m so fired up. There is no way I am going to lose my treasured British title to him,”

The 25-year-old shocked everyone with his quick win over Murray as many felt that he was taking a big risk facing the more experienced man.

He continued, “I was expecting a hard fight last time as Murray was one of the top men in the domestic ranks and was renown for his punching power. But I have great self-confidence and knew I was going to win. The opening came early to stop Murray so I took it. I’ve proved since that I can go the twelve round distance but like all fighters I like an early KO win,”

Earl is not taking Murray lightly after hearing that his opponent has gone to America to train with Danny Williams under trainer Jimmy McDonnell.

“I’m not worried about him going to America to train. I have always trained in London at the TKO gym and it’s produced the winning results so why change it. Murray will be out for revenge this time so I’m training even harder as he has a lot to prove and that will make him a dangerous fighter,” Added Earl.

After this fight, Earl has set his ambitions on bigger things.

“Once I get Murray out of the way I want to make one more defence, which will be a voluntary, to make the Lonsdale belt my property. I would then like to go onto European level and then the World scene.” Finished Murray.
