28.05.04 – Mohegan Sun and DiBella Entertainment will bring “Broadway Boxing Presented by Mohegan Sun,” a monthly series featuring New York fighters, to the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, July 30th. Nate Campbell will battle Edelmiro “Tiger” Martinez for the number two ranking in the IBF Junior Lightweight division. Meanwhile, undefeated middleweight Sechew Powell (12-0, 9 KO’s)will compete in the 10-round jr middleweight bout in the co-feature event. The event will be broadcast by HDNet in high definition and then on Madison Square Garden Network, Fox Sports Net New England and Empire Sports Network. The broadcast team will include: MSG’s talented Gus Johnson delivering the blow by blow; boxing authority Steve Farhood handling expert analyst duties; New York native and former Golden Gloves champion Brian Adams will be the ringside reporter and third man, while WFAN and “Imus in the Morning” sportscaster Sid Rosenberg will serve as the ring announcer. Respected Boston Globe writer Ron Borges will rotate with Farhood and handle color commentary on the New England shows.
As an amateur, Campbell compiled a record of 30-6 while winning the Florida State Championships for three consecutive years: 1997-1999. He turned pro on February 5, 2000, destroying Scoey Fields in one round (TKO 1). Two years later, he crushed Alric Johnson in four rounds to win the NABA Jr.. Lightweight Title (TKO 4). He later went on to score victories over Jamie Torres and Carlos Navarro. Subsequently, he defeated Daniel Alicea to win the NABF Jr. Lightweight Title.
On January 25, 2003, Campbell lost a close decision to former world champion Joel Casamayor in an exciting 10 round war on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” program. Campbell began the bout strong, backing up Casamayor with stinging overhand rights. However, Casamayor stormed back in the late rounds with precision combinations to seal the victory.
Campbell returned to the ring on May 17, 2003, to headline the NBC “Budweiser Boxing Series.” He battled “Tiger” Martinez for 10 exciting rounds before learning the bout had been scored a draw. Martinez built an early lead on the scorecards, repeatedly landing lead rights to frustrate the aggressive Campbell. However, the tide turned in round eight as a vicious right hand followed by a flurry of punches dropped Martinez to the canvas. The two-point round proved the difference on the judges’ scorecards.
Powell made his professional debut on August 17, 2002, and hopes to follow in the footsteps of some of Brooklyn’s greatest boxing champions including Floyd Patterson, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and Zab Judah. Powell boast an impressive trophy case as an amateur boxer, including third in the National Golden Gloves tournament in 1999, National Golden Gloves Champion in 2000, second in the Everlast U.S Championships in 2000, and the Caribbean Tournament Champion in 2001. After all his amateur successes, Powell appears poised to climb the professional ranks.
