Canas and Ramirez victorious on Hitz’s Black Wednesday card

Photo: Tom Barnes/Hitz Boxing – An electric Black Wednesday crowd got more than their fill of pre-Thanksgiving action during Hitz Boxing’s “Fight Night at the Horseshoe: The Black Wednesday Battle” Wednesday night in Hammond, IN.

In the six round main event, light welterweight Antonio “Aztec God of War” Canas (9-1-1, 3 KOs) beat the always tough Genaro “G” Mendez (7-2-1, 4 KOs) by majority decision. The two former sparring partners traded punches through the match.

“I wanna be a champion, Chicago’s champion,” said Canas after the fight. “I am looking at big things guys.”

Froch seems to be leaning towards career finale in Vegas, Groves says he’d stop Froch in six-rounds in a rematch

The fallout over last weekend’s epic yet controversial Carl Froch-George Groves fight continues. Amid reported death threats aimed at referee Howard Foster – who, as if you didn’t know, halted the fight in the 9th-round, instantly coming under fire from just about everybody, the feeling being that he halted the action prematurely – fans continue to talk about a possible rematch between the two British rivals.

Fans also continue to either praise Groves and have a go at Froch, or, is some cases, praise both fighters. But you will be hard pressed to find anyone who is entirely satisfied with what went down in Manchester last Saturday. The only way to end the controversy, the thinking goes, is to get Froch and Groves back in the ring ASAP. But it’s almost never that simple in boxing.

Mundine All Class in Stoppage Victory over Mosley

Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine (45-5, 27 KOs) was in full flight in his six round stoppage victory over future hall of famer ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KOs) at the AllPhones Arena in Sydney, Australia last night.

In the 50th fight of his career and having long sought to fight a marquee name in the sport, it was clear from the opening bell the 38 year old Australian was out to put on a performance to get the boxing world’s attention.

Mundine possessed a significant size advantage, with his six centimetre height advantage to Mosley looking quite imposing. Upon commencement, Mundine took the centre of the ring and was looking to stalk Mosley.

Mundine dominates Mosley

Back spasms saw stopped multi time world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KOs) for the first time in his glorious twenty year career in his bout with Anthony “The Man” Mundine (45-5, 27 KOs) at the All Phones Arena in Sydney, NSW on Wednesday night.

Mosley was ruled out by Doctor Lou Lewis and referee Raul Caiz senior but the three division titlist was being dominant by an impressive Mundine who put on his best display since edging Daniel Geale in 2009.

As in his bouts against Vernon Forrest, the shorter American, who had a two centimetre reach advantage, had trouble with get Mundine’s left lead and was forced to fight mostly going backwards. Coming down from 168 pounds in 2008 , Mundine’s size and strength was evident as he bullied Shane both outside and in close.

Zab Judah: Training camp has been fun. We had a great training camp here in Las Vegas and a lot of good public relations and I’m just excited to come back home and be crowned the king of BK.

Randall Bailey notches 44th career win

Three-time, two-division world champion Randall “KO King” Bailey (44-8, 37 KOs) returned to the ring last Saturday night in Tampa for his first fight in 13 months, defeating Ecuador welterweight Humberto “Bam Bam” Toledo (41-11-2, 25 KOs) by way of an eighth-round disqualification for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) International belt.

Bailey battered Toledo from the opening bell right up to the bizarre ending, in which Toledo suddenly and surprisingly took a knee in the middle of the ring, only to get back up and get disqualified for pushing referee Frank Santore, Jr. into the ropes.

“I wasn’t really surprised because I saw the way he was responding in the first couple of rounds,” Bailey explained. “I was hitting him hard and often and he was looking to the referee to find a way out of the fight. The ref wasn’t cooperating with him, so in the eighth round, he took a knee, jumped up and pushed the ref.”

Nathan Cleverly withdraws from Daniel Ammann bout with back injury

Former WBO World Light-Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly has had to withdraw from his comeback fight at the Copper Box Arena this Saturday due to a back injury.

The Welsh star was making his long awaited return to the ring against Australian Daniel Ammann for his first fight in the cruiserweight division with the Vacant Commonwealth title on the line.

Finchley heavyweight Dereck Chisora still headlines the show when he defends his WBO International title against Ondrej Pala with the Vacant WBA International title also on the line, with London super-middleweight star Frank Buglioni challenging for his first title – the Vacant WBO European Championship, plus a cracking showdown between Bradley Skeete and Colin Lynes for the Vacant English Welterweight title.

Carl Froch vs George Groves: A Double mugging

At first glance it would appear that in the Froch/Groves fight last Saturday, George Groves was robbed too early in the fight.

On second glance, it wculd also be conceived the other way round.

Groves was clearly winning the fight up to the that point, 10/8 round to Groves in the first round and won most of the rounds after that until the 9th round.

Froch was slow and messy, Groves was sharp and to the point until the 6th round, at that point Groves power seemed to fade, decent combos deflected off the side of Froch’s face like we have seen from everyone who has fought him in the past.

Manny Pacquiao: “I Am Willing To Fight Floyd. So It Is Up To Him”

pac6838 As expected, the two names that are involuntarily intertwined forever, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are back where they belong: in people’s heads and forum boards.

Now that Pacquiao disposed on Brandon Rios, winning every single round of their fight according to most, Mayweather Jr. is being mentioned as a possible opponent sometime in 2014. Their match-up, at least in my opinion is unavoidable, and the two stepping inside the ring across each other is just a matter of time.

The question that Pacquiao vs. Rios was supposed to answer is whether Manny is still a viable competitive opponent for Mayweather Jr., but was that question really answered? Was Rios the test? According to Freddie Roach, the fight is still hot.
