Ricky Burns v Ray Beltran – The View from Ringside

YouTube video
Sitting ringside at the Ricky Burns v Raymundo Beltran fight in Glasgow last Saturday, I was never more proud to be associated with the sport of boxing, as a writer, nor more ashamed.

Scotland’s Ricky Burns and Mexico’s Ray Beltran are true warriors, honourable men who are a credit to their respective countries and to a sport which throughout its history has regularly made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The draw that was announced at the end of the fight was not only a travesty, it was a crime. Not only was Ray Beltran denied his just deserts for the endless weeks of hard training, sparring, and sacrifice it took to get himself ready, Ricky Burns was forced to endure the embarrassment of standing in the ring with his hand raised in front of 6000 spectators and the millions watching at home, who all knew he’d lost. As a genuinely decent man, this undoubtedly hurt the WBO lightweight champion, adding to the physical trauma of the broken jaw he sustained early in the fight.

Danny Garcia: I’ll make Matthysse pay

garcia34 DANNY GARCIA has dismissed the chances of him being flattened by KO King Lucas Matthysse this weekend.

The cocky American risks his WBA Super and WBC World Light-Welterweight titles against the Argentinean who has knocked out 32 of his 34 victims at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Saturday.

It’s the chief support to the potential richest match in history between Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and is televised live and exclusive in the UK on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Garcia, 25, who has won all 26 professional contests is best known for beating Amir Khan 14 months ago in a big upset.

Mayweather’s First Battle With Castillo – The Only Real Blueprint On How To Defeat “Money?”

mayweather5555Maybe Oscar De La Hoya has got it wrong, and his close (in the opinion of some, not in the opinion of many others) but losing fight with superstar Floyd Mayweather is not the real example of a blueprint on how to defeat the 44-0 master. Maybe – and it’s testament to Floyd’s greatness that we have to clutch at straws in such a way – we have to go back to the night of April of 2002, and Mayweather’s tough, close and gruelling encounter with Mexican warrior Jose Luis Castillo to find anything approaching a genuine blueprint on how to beat him.

It’s certainly interesting that Mexican fighters have given Mayweather his toughest tests (Castillo and Mexican/American De La Hoya being right at the top of the short list) and maybe Saul Canelo Alvarez will have studied both fights in his preparations for “The One,” which is now just days away.

Oscar De La Hoya Backing Saul Alvarez To Beat Floyd Mayweather

dela hoya14Oscar de la Hoya claims ‘The One’ has become the richest fight in history because people want to see Floyd Mayweather finally lose.

De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions have put together Saturday’s £150 million Las Vegas scrap when Mayweather challenges WBA super and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The financial records set when De la Hoya was outpointed by Mayweather in 2007 will be shattered in the fight being screened live in the UK on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

De la Hoya, the GBP President has never been close to Mayweather despite his organisation’s involvement in making him the world’s highest earning sportsman in 2012 and almost certainly this year.

Chris Arreola vs. Deontay Wilder in 2014? It Only Makes Sense

wilder4411Chris Arreola (36-3-0) was meant to be a boxer. He is lacking nothing, but has had a somewhat rough spell.

After his loss to Vitali Klitschko in 2009, Arreola went on to secure a win against Brain Minto, and then once again suffer a loss against Tomasz Adamek in 2010. Since then, Arreola has won 8 and lost one fight. His last loss was to Bermane Stiverne, the man who is now trying to get a chance at beating Vitali Klitschko.

Arreola’s recent win was a one round annihilation of Seth Mitchell, leaving Arreola looking for his next big fight. Chris has been chasing another big title fight for all these years, but has somehow been unable to find one.

Arslan-Huck_1(Photo credit: Team Sauerland) There will be no world championship boxing inside the ring this Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany. “I am gutted to say the least,” said the 28-year-old titlist who suffered the injury in his final sparring session. “I was in such a good shape and ready to go. Now, my preparation was for nothing.” Huck, being the fighter he is, still tried to make the fight against Arslan happen. “After I went to the doctor on Friday, who said that I cannot compete on September 14, I wanted to get a second opinion. However, on Saturday evening another specialist told me that the damage to my elbow is serious and that I will be out for six to eight weeks.”
