Commey ready to beat Buckland to Commonwealth Lightweight title

There is no turning back now as Richard Oblitey Commey’s date of destiny approaches ever quicker with his Commonwealth Lightweight date against Gary Buckland now on July 12 barely days away.

The unbeaten Ghanaian’s long awaited quest to wear the Commonwealth Lightweight belt takes centrestage at the York Hall, Bethnal Green in London next weekend when he squares up against Welshman Gary Buckland for a title he first got the opportunity to fight for a year ago.

One fighter after another had failed to make it into the ring for the bout for the British empire belt with Commey even making time in-between to fight for and win the African Boxing Union (ABU) Lightweight title on December 26.

Terence Crawford: Impressive!

Terence Crawford demonstrated that he`s the best lightweight pugilist in the world after he successfully retained his World Boxing Organization`s (WBO) Title with a ninth round technical knockout victory over the previous undefeated and former featherweight world champion, Yuriorkis Gamboa, in which he scored four knockdowns.

Both boxers put on an extremely entertaining and action packed bout in front of a sold out crowd of close to 11,000 passionate fans who were there to support their hometown fighter, Crawford at the CenturyLink Center. This was the first world title matchup in Omaha, Nebraska in 42 years.

Gamboa controlled the first four rounds by getting the better of the exchanges and landed the more powerful shots due to his amazing speed that caught Crawford off guard. Gamboa` s yearlong inactivity and only fighting for the third time in two and half years didn`t appear to be an issue in the early going.

Mayweather announces Maidana rematch on September 13th

Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) ended speculation about who he’ll be facing for his next fight by announcing on Monday that he will indeed be facing Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) in a rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and that he also has plans for a huge fight next May on Cinco de Mayo.

Mayweather didn’t say who his opponent will be for next May, but it’s got to be a big, big name in order to persuade Bob Arum of Top Rank in trying to compete with Mayweather by putting on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto on the same night on HBO pay-per-view.

Prediction for Floyd Mayweather’s September 13th Fight

by Robert Uzzell and Chip Mitchell: Floyd Mayweather, Jr is in the final three fights of his career. Many names have been thrown out there: Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, and of course Marcos Maidana.

In Floyd’s last fight, he faced his stiffest challenge in a while in defeating Maidana by majority decision. The victory by Floyd came at the cost of a few shots to the family jewels and a nice shiner above his right eye.

Before we get to the predictions, let’s look at the odds of each fighter facing Floyd in September.

Manny Pacquiao – 0%. The politics or politricks involved continue and even if both guys were ready to play, there is not enough time to build up this super-fight.

Decline of the Lightweight Division

On Saturday night Lightweight champion Terence Crawford delivered a breakout performance. The Omaha native showed speed, great technical ability and power, dropping Yuriorkis Gamboa four times en route to a ninth round stoppage win. The question now is, where does he go from here?

The answer is that he has to move up to Light Welterweight to get the big fights. Crawford’s victory has shone a light on the decline of the once great Lightweight division.
