James DeGale – Britain’s Next Road Warrior?

James DeGale - Britain's Next Road Warrior?

On May 23rd in Boston, Mass, North London’s James “Chunky” DeGale (20-1, 14ko) will attempt to become the latest British fighter to travel to America and win a version of the world title, following Sheffield’s IBF welterweight champ Kell Brook who dethroned Shawn Porter in Carson, California, last August.

DeGale will contest the vacant IBF 168lb strap vacated by countryman Carl Froch, against arguably the trickier of Michigan’s Dirrell brothers, Andre. (24-1, 16ko)

Many British fans will remember him from his controversial SD loss to Froch in Nottingham as part of “The Super Six” tournament. A fight many Brits and Froch fans readily concede Dirrell was unlucky to lose.

Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov on a Highway to Hell

Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov on a Highway to Hell

This Saturday night Turning Stone Resort and Casino will host an HBO event that will likely be the leading candidate for fight of the year by night’s end. Stylistically speaking this is as close to a hardcore-fight fans dream matchup as any other on the busy spring fight schedule. Lucas “The Machine” is set to do battle against Ruslan “The Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov with the victor possibly facing the co-feature bout winner between Terrance Crawford and Thomas Dulorme. Who will survive this firefight that promises to produce enough electricity to light up all of New York City?

Ruslan Provodnikov came up the hard way both in and outside the ring. From his humble begins as a member of a communal tribe in Western Siberia to grinding his way up the ranks on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. Ruslan has out kicked his coverage long ago and overachieved beyond his natural skill set. His coming out party was a war with Timothy Bradley now two summers ago. He followed that narrow-points loss to Bradley with an obliteration of Mike Alvarado.

Billy Joe Saunders – A Great Year Ahead

Billy Joe Saunders - A Great Year Ahead

There is more good news for Britain’s undefeated middleweight Billy Joe Saunders (21-0,11ko) this morning as he has been named the EBU fighter of the year. In a joint accolade his fight with Chris Eubank Jr last November (19-1,14ko) has also been named EBU fight of the year.

It’s a deserving award for the British, Commonwealth and European 160lb fighter ahead of his blockbuster world title challenge later this year against “Irish” Andy Lee, who we saw last weekend in a good fight with Peter Quillin which ended in a hard fought draw.

Floyd Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao: Bizarre Pre Fight Coverage

Floyd Mayweather - Manny Pacquiao: Bizarre Pre Fight Coverage

When I read sundry articles by some self-styled Boxing Analyst and pundits on the possible outcome in the Floyd Mayweather Junior and Manny Pacquiao fight, I am driven to wonder whether this fight have not propelled us into some kind of surrealism, where the bizarre and the illogical have replaced reason and objectivity in the minds of men. I certainly am not lumping those who simply feel Manny might win, based on their subjective opinions and assessment of the skill set brought to the fight by the two pugilist, in with others who make absurd claims that Floyd has no chance. Yes, one have to expect these kind of convictions from Manny’s trainers and his supporters. But one do expect at least a modicum of analytical maturity to be exhibited in the understanding of those who are considered to be boxing analyst and pundits. And what is even more puzzling and shocking, when one considers such an outrageous assessment of Floyd’s chances against Manny, is the fact that the chance of victory for virtually every fighter entering the ring, even those with few wins and many losses, are never whittled down to zero. So from whence comes this bizarre pattern of reasoning.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather – an integral assault vs. a defensive equilibrium

Pacquiao vs Mayweather – an integral assault vs. a defensive equilibrium

The smart money is on Money according to the odds, the smart Manny will be all over Money as well scanning him for glitches. This fight is expected to set new financial records and is presumed to be the richest boxing fight in history. Seat prices vary from $1500 to $10000, not exactly a people’s fight, and pay per view is 89.95 – HD 99.95. Whatever golden standards it sets, the suspense has created unrealistic expectations among casual and professional fans (analysts, writers and commentators) that make several educated guesses a day on top of their official predictions. The most important prediction – that of the bookmakers – places Mayweather as a firm betting favorite and odds makers take nervous care in preparing their forecast as they are guaranteed to be taken up on it. Rugs and riches aside, from pure boxing/sporting point of view this fight would do well to be considered among the top 50 of all time once the initial excitement wears off.

Hatton Picks Floyd For May 2nd; Thinks Khan Can Trouble Mayweather

Hatton Picks Floyd For May 2nd; Thinks Khan Can Trouble Mayweather

The most prominent, and at times desperate member of the “Mayweather” sweepstakes is perennial “Bridesmaid”, Amir Khan (30-3,19ko) who whilst still not confirming his next fight will be with American Chris Algieri, knows he is fast running out of time and any other option.

Despite all that, perhaps the Bolton fighter can take cheer from legendary British 140lb-er Ricky “Hitman” Hatton,(45-3, 32ko) who in various sections of the British media has been vocal in his support of Khan and his chances at beating Mayweather, should he indeed secure that fight.
