The WBC Middleweight Title Hostage Situation

Miguel Cotto stopped Daniel Geale in the 4th round to defend his WBC middleweight title last night at the Barclays center in Brooklyn, NY. This was the first defense of the belt Cotto won with an excellent performance against veteran Sergio Martinez last year. The winner grabbed the trophy and ran for a whole year before he made a “prudent” choice of bypassing the real challenges in favor of fighting a no-threat opponent. His reluctance to face his mandatory GGG has transpired unequivocally and it seems he would rather be stripped than face a middleweight proper. Apparently he and his team will sit on the title and negotiate its release rather than make a a stand for it – those “middies” hit too hard anyway.

Cotto commented: “My weight yesterday was 153.6 pounds; you think I’m a middleweight? I’m not.”

That’s as clear as it gets regarding a GGG showdown. The Puerto Rican champ stated that if people want his fight with Saul Alvarez to happen, it will happen. He must have noticed that more people appear to want him to step up to his obligation and face his WBC mandatory challenger.

Cotto destroys Geale

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) paved the way towards a possible fight against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by stopping an over-matched, underpowered Daniel Geale (31-4, 16 KOs) in the 4th round on Saturday night to successfully defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title in front of 12,157 fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Geale, 34, quit after getting knocked down twice by Cotto in the 4th. Geale looked like he could have continued after getting up from a knockdown, but he opted instead to fight another day by telling the referee Harvey Dock that he didn’t want to continue fighting. The bout was subsequently stopped at 1:27 of the round.

Robert Guerrero defeats Aaron Martinez by 10 round split decision

(June 6) – Southern California boxing fans were treated to an afternoon of hard punches and quick action as Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC took to the ring at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The Saturday afternoon fight card, part of a jam-packed day of sports action on NBC, showcased a heavyweight brawl between Dominic Breazeale and Yasmany Consuegra and a fast and furious welterweight bout between Robert Guerrero and Aron Martinez.

Guerrero defeats Martinez; Cuellar destroys Darchinyan

(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) had to get up off the deck in the 4th round to rally to beat Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) by a controversial 10 round split decision at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Guerrero dropped hard in the 4th round after getting nailed by four hard head shots from Martinez.

To Guerrero’s credit, he got back to his feet and was able to rally to win the fight by dominated four of the last five rounds. Guerrero appeared to lose the 7th, as well as rounds 1 through 5, but the judges felt that he did enough to get the win. The scores were 97-92, 95-94 for Guerrero, and 95-94 for Martinez. I had Martinez winning the fight. Guerrero looked terrible out there, and I don’t think he should have been given the decision.

Still Waiting On That Announcement Carl

It seems every time I write a piece on Nottingham’s Cobra, Carl Froch, there is a downbeat tone to proceedings these days. And that’s not for want of trying. If I were to be writing about one of his past glories then maybe I could inject some enthusiasm, well – I definitely could, because contrary to popular belief, I’m a big Froch fan – and followed his career throughout his domestic days, through the legendary world title winning fight with Jean Pascal, into the Super Six and beyond.

Right up until now.

And since “knocking out George Groves in front of 80k at Wembley” – by virtue of that phrase alone – Carl Froch has become a parody of himself, a cartoon character – and, thanks to his past reality TV turns – a bit of a “celebrity” over here in England.

Tyson Fury Growing Impatient Over Klitschko?

All the focus following his fight with America’s Bryant Jennings was on Wladimir Klitschko facing his mandatory obligations next – meaning Britain’s WBO #1 Tyson Fury – and speculative talk has varied between the fight being made in the UK at Wembley in the Autumn/Fall to perhaps it being yet another Wladimir fight on German soil around the same time.

Yet following all the hype and speculation over recent weeks, things have gone quiet – too quiet for Tyson’s liking, and the 6ft 9″ traveller has taken to twitter to vent his frustrations and attempt to goad the Ukrainian in his own inimitable style, confirming that nothing is yet set in stone – far from it.

Dirrell Wants DeGale Rematch Above All Else

After narrowly losing out in his challenge for the vacant IBF 168lb title to Britain’s James DeGale at the end of last month on Al Haymon’s PBC format, Andre “The Resurrected” Dirrell, has spoken to fighthype.com to insist that he wants to do it all again and is prepared to come to the UK to do so.

The American essentially lost the fight due to two early knockdowns, that despite a spirited comeback, were enough to win DeGale the fight, even when it appeared the Harlesden man was flagging in the final third of the contest.

Caparello Arrives At Super Middleweight

Former light heavyweight World title challenger Blake “il capo” Caparello announced his arrival at 168lbs by putting on an educated boxing display to dominate game Frenchman Affif Belghecham.

Caparello in his first fight at super middleweight lifted the WBO Oriental and the PABA titles and improves to
21 – 1 – 6 ko’s.

Caparello stated; “I felt good at my new weight and I’m happy to know I can go 10 rounds against a pressure fighter. I’m looking forward to some big fights at super middleweight.”
