Bizarre Ending for Ricky Burns in Hull

Scotland’s former two weight world champion Ricky Burns, now campaigning back down at 135 lbs, had a bizarre end to his fight with Ghana’s Prince Ofutsu last night in Hull when the Ghanaian second threw in the towel midway through the fifth round – ostensibly for no apparent reason.

Yes the fight – a tune up for Burns following his defeat at the hands of Omar Figueroa in Texas back in May – was essentially a mismatch, with the now (15-4) Ofotsu hopelessly out-gunned from the get-go as a gulf in class was immediately evident.

Danny Garcia defeats Paulie Malignaggi

(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) BROOKLYN (August 2, 2015) – Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) kept his perfect record intact Saturday with a ninth-round TKO of two-time world champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Garcia was able to control the fight with lead rights and counter left hooks that kept the agile Malignaggi from landing anything significant. The punishment took its toll on Malignaggi as a cut opened up on his right eye in the third round.

Garcia stops Malignaggi; Jacobs defeats Mora

(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) We may have seen the end of former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi’s career tonight with him getting beaten up and stopped in the 9th round by former WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The referee prematurely stopped the fight at 2:22 of the 9th round after Garcia stunned Malignaggi.

It didn’t matter that Malignaggi seemed to recover from the shot and was fighting back. The referee Arthur Mercante Jr. decided he’s seen enough from Malignaggi and chose to stop the fight. Malignaggi was cut in two places around his right eye at the time of the stoppage. However, the fight wasn’t stopped because of his cut.

Campbell destroys Coyle; Rose beats Jones; Burns and Whyte both win

WBC #15 lightweight contender Luke Campbell (12-0, 10 KOs) totally dominated Tommy Coyle (21-3, 12 KOs) in knocking him down four times en route to scoring a 10th round stoppage tonight at the Craven Park Stadium in Hull, UK. Coyle was hurt with a body shot in the 9th, and then finished off with three knockdowns in the 10th. Coyle continually attacked the bigger and stronger Campbell, but he didn’t have the punching power to worry him.

Carl Frampton: I Only Need One Fight to Beat Scott Quigg / Underestimated Gonzalez Jr

Boxing can be a fickle business. Before both men boxed on opposite sides of the Atlantic on the same night last month, the odds-makers and a large majority of fight fans favoured IBF 122 lb champion Carl Frampton over his Bury based rival Scott Quigg should their sought after domestic grudge match ever come off.

Frampton survived some early scares in his American debut against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr to battle back for a courageous and deserved points win, while Quigg blew away former (2x) Frampton foe Kiko Martinez inside 2 rounds in Manchester, following perhaps the most shaky 1st round of his entire career.

Willie Monroe Jr Hoping for Golovkin Undercard Slot / Eyeing Sep-Oct Return

Although he was floored three times and stopped in the 6th round in his world title challenge to Gennady Golovkin earlier this year (muttering the words ‘I’m done’ to ref Jack Weiss), former Boxcino tournament winner Willie Monroe Jr still impressed a few people with his performance, displaying some slick southpaw skills and impressive movement, tagging the Kazakh knockout artist more than is healthy at times, thus leaving many ringside to say – if only he had carried the power to gain Golovkin’s respect? Maybe, just maybe the Kazakh would have been in the first real trouble of his career?

Either way, it was clear after the fight that the New Yorker can come again, and in his latest chat with thaboxingvoice.com, Monroe alluded to a tentative Fall/Autumn return that he hopes may lead to an undercard spot on Golovkin’s October unification fight with French-Canadian banger and new IBF champion David Lemieux.

Parker annihilates Tupou!

Invercargill New Zealand, 7th ranked WBO heavyweight Joseph Parker (15-0-0) absolutely annihilated 13th ranked WBO heavyweight Bowie Tupou (25-4-0). Tupou came out of his corner looking to bull-rush Parker, swinging looping overhand punches from the cheap seats in trying to land a big shot early. Parker stayed calm, worked at establishing his jab and as Tupou come boring in again he timed a perfectly leveraged short right hand that landed on the crown of Tupou’s head, sending Tupou crashing face first to the canvass in about as devastating a knockout as you will see. Over at 1:06 of the first round.

Joseph Parker Knocks Bowie Tupou out cold in Invercargill, NZ

Big punching New Zealander Joseph Parker sent a further warning signal to the heavyweight division tonight, wiping out Bowie Tupou in a little over a minute in Invercargill with a stunning right hook up close that the Tonga born fighter simply didn’t see coming.

Tupou lay motionless, face down on the canvas for a few genuinely worrying moments before eventually being lifted to his feet. The 23 year old Parker improved to 15-0, 13 early with the 1st round victory – his 9th inside 3 rounds.

Garcia vs. Malignaggi: Can the “Magic Man” pull a trick out of his hat to upset Danny Garcia?

Daniel Jacobs faces Sergio Mora which represents his toughest test since being stopped by Dmitry Pirog in 2010. The card faces the normal scrutiny that many Al Haymon events get but this scribe won’t be surprised if one of these match ups test the favorite more than fans think. Will the move to welterweight help or hurt Danny Garcia? Can Jacobs look impressive against a defensive fighter?

If we rewound the clock to just under two years ago we would find Danny Garcia at the top of the junior welterweight division. The Philadelphian’s victory over Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse placed him on the doorstep of the elite level and the exposure of being the co-feature to Mayweather/Canelo Showtime PPV raised his profile immensely.

Joseph Parker has turned up in New Zealand from his Las Vegas base in outstanding fettle, and while Parker has never turned up to a fight out of condition he has presented himself for this fight in the shape of his career. His muscularly defined physique leading fans to think they are about to see something special from the regions premiere big man.

On the face value of Parker’s physical appearance it would appear he and coach Kevin Barry have gone to a whole new level in their pre-fight preparations.
