Luis Ortiz is scheduled to defend his WBA interim title against Tony Thompson on March 5 in Washington, DC. Ortiz belongs at the top of the division but has a hard time getting the exposure and especially the fights that he deserves.

Ortiz is fighting Thompson as a last resort after he was turned down by 5 other heavyweights. The Cuban is clearly being avoided and there is feeble excuse but obvious reasons for the reluctance of the big boys to face him in the ring. His record is 24-0, his skills are remarkable and he has gone the distance only once in an eight-rounder 6 years ago.

Juan Manuel Marquez talks possibility of facing Miguel Cotto in September or October, after May comeback fight

If it took place, it would be a great fight between two great fighters who are now in the twilight of their legendary careers: Juan Manuel Marquez against Miguel Cotto. And, in a piece over on ESPN.com, Dan Rafael has reported how Marquez, inactive since his May 2014 points win over Mike Alvarado, is in talks to face Cotto later this year.

Understandably, considering his layoff, the Mexican great is not 100-percent sure he will actually fight again, much less against Cotto. But the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer has begun training again.

Rival super-bantamweights Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg have sat down and had the face-to-face treatment courtesy of Sky Sports’ “The Gloves Are Off” series, and from what the teaser trailer shows, the full episode – to be aired tomorrow, Valentine’s Day – should be quite something.

The two men appear to have some mutual respect, with an apparently grudging handshake taking place, but the back and forth verbal exchanges suggest some very real bad blood between the IBF and the WBA champions.

Roy Jones Junior to “fight” in bizarre pay-per-view event – against “a fan!”

It’s one of those stories that, when you read it, you have to double check to see if you really have read correctly. Once great multi-weight king Roy Jones Junior – who recently announced how, contrary to some reports that said he had retired, made it clear he has not yet done so – will indeed fight again. Sort of.

It’s up on a number of boxing sites, so it must be true: Jones, 47, will “fight a fan” in a March 20th pay-per-view event in Phoenix that will also feature MMA and wrestling bouts.
