Is Deontay Wilder the best Heayweight in the world?

Wow!!!! I’m still a little stunned at what I just saw. Today is November 4th. The time is 10:51 central time. I just witnessed a 1 round destruction of Bermane Stiverne by Deontay Wilder. Wilder looked phenomenal tonight. He looked calm, composed and calculating. A lion stalking his prey. He pounced and pounced in a hurry. From the opening bell everything Wilder did had bad intentions written all over it. Even his jab looked mean.

As I watched the fight I turned to my fiance’ and said Wilder looks like he wants to take him out. Which he did in violent dominating fashion. However it was how he went about the k.o. that impressed me the most. Given the heated trash talk and legitimate bad blood between the two men I expected Wilder to come out swinging from the outset. However Wilder started aggressive yet measured.

The long and largely entertaining career of Ricardo Mayorga surely comes to an end with stoppage loss to Andrey Sirotkin

The long and largely entertaining career of Ricardo Mayorga surely comes to an end with stoppage loss to Andrey Sirotkin

He fought, he drank beer, he smoked cigarettes, and he gave us plenty of entertaining nights and fights along the way, but “El Matador” Ricardo Mayorga surely reached the end last night in Russia.

The 44 year old, having actually won his previous fight this past April (over a 12-17-1 Jaudiel Zepeda who he TKO’d) retired on his stool after nine rounds against unbeaten Russian Andrey Sirotkin, now 14-0(4). Mayorga, who gave it a go while he was able, in the early rounds, falls to 32-10-1(26) and it is to be hoped this will indeed be the final tally for the wild man from Nicaragua.

Luis Ortiz is banned from WBA-sanctioned fights for one year; removed from ratings

Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz really blew it when he tested positive for a banned substance a few weeks ahead of his scheduled WBC title challenge of Deontay Wilder. Not only did the 38 year old southpaw ruin that intriguing fight, but Ortiz has now lost the mandatory status he had with the WBA – meaning Ortiz can no longer challenge current WBA (and IBF) ruler Anthony Joshua; not for a year anyway.

Ten years ago today: Joe Calzaghe beats Mikkel Kessler in his “finest fight”

Joe Calzaghe, arguably the finest super-middleweight in history, scored a huge win a decade ago today when he decisioned Danish hero Mikkel Kessler over 12 gripping rounds. Today when looking back, Calzaghe, who of course retired at a perfect 46-0, has a number of fights to look back on and feel very, very proud.

But Joe has one fight as his pick for his finest, his best; the one he is most proud of. It is the win over Kessler that took place in Cardiff in front of around 50,000 fans. Some fans may point to Calzaghe’s great win over Jeff Lacy as his finest showing, some to his win over Bernard Hopkins.

Wilder vs. Stiverne 2: A Necessary Evil

Wilder vs. Stiverne 2: A Necessary Evil

The definition of necessary evil is an unfavorable thing (This Fight) that someone (The WBC) believes must be done or accepted because it is necessary to achieve a better outcome — especially because possible alternative courses of action or inaction would be worse. Yep that pretty much defines this unnecessary bout that even Showtime didn’t want to broadcast originally.

Joseph Parker: The “Other” Heavyweight Champion

Joseph Parker: The "Other" Heavyweight Champion

Just like the middle child or the last pick for the dodgeball game, WBO Heavyweight Champion Joseph Parker finds himself in a very precarious position as the forgotten heavyweight champion. Often overlooked, undervalued and disregarded, Joseph Parker is not as revered as his champion counterparts Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder. Even non titleholders such as Kubrat Pulev and Jarell Miller generate more buzz than Parker. With Joshua having defeated Carlos Takam by 10th round stoppage and Wilder set to rematch Bermane Stiverne on November 4th. The world is already beating the drums for a Wilder vs Joshua showdown. Both fighters seem to want the fight as well. However there is no real mention of Joseph Parker. His last fight was a majority decsion victory over Hughie Fury. What can Parker do to raise his profile and secure a big fight?
