Vasyl Lomachenko made history on Saturday night when he defeated Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez to capture the WBO super featherweight title in his 130 pound debut. For Lomachenko this is only his 7th professional contest, giving him the unique distinction of becoming the fastest fighter to ever win world championship titles in more than one weight class. Lomachenko had previously won the 126 pound version of the WBO belt when he defeated Gary Russell Jr in his 3rd professional match. He defended that title three times before venturing north to challenge Martinez.

Lomachenko’s lone loss was suffered in his 2nd professional bout when he dropped a decision against Orlando Salido, who was also in attendance on Saturday. Salido himself is coming off of a solid performance in an entertaining scrap against Francisco Vargas last week in a bout that was somewhat controversially ruled a draw. When Salido and Lomachenko first met the deck seemed to be stacked against Lomachenko. Salido came in over the contractual weight, and also fought what was perceived by most as a dirty fight, throwing many low blows over the course of 12 rounds in addition to employing other tactics that fall outside the rules. The referee appeared to act as an enabler to Salido, and Lomachenko had not fully grasped the transition from amateurs to pros, which is a process he has shown vast improvement with in recent fights.

When HBO commentator Max Kellerman questioned Lomachenko about the prospects of a rematch against Salido, Lomachenko suggested he was open to the idea. Could this be a rematch we will get some time in the near future, and if we do get this rematch, will the outcome be any different than it was their first go around? It is a most intriguing prospect that has a lot of boxing fans talking and a lot of positive buzz about this possibility coming together.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner provides a brief recap into Lomachenko’s sensational victory this past weekend against Martinez, and also explores the possibility of a rematch between Lomachenko and Salido happening some time in the very near future.
