Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez targeted a unification bout with Sunny Edwards after becoming the new WBO world flyweight champion with a unanimous decision over Cristian Gonzalez.

Rodriguez showed his class and courage as he overcame a broken jaw in the sixth round to dominate the Mexican challenger in San Antonio, Texas, and claim his second world title at 23 years old.

The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111, 116-112 in favor of the American, who had relinquished his WBC super-flyweight belt to move down a weight class.

Rodriguez wasted no time in calling out Edwards, the IBF flyweight champion and fellow Matchroom stablemate, who had previously expressed his interest in facing him.

“Sunny Edwards, that’s the only option. I think he’s been talking so let’s make it happen,” he said.

Edwards, 27, is also undefeated in 17 fights and retained his title with a convincing points victory over Felix Alvarado in November.
