Cotto/Canelo Looking Good For November

Ahead of their recent fights with James Kirkland and Daniel Geale respectively, PPV stars Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto were already set to clash – and after both came through those fights in impressive, knockout fashion, the Mexico v Puerto Rico money spinning super-fight is looking good for November according to Cotto’s advisor Gabriel Penagaricano, who has spoken to ESPN Desportes.

“There is a lot of movement in every way.” he said of negotiations, which given the sheer revenue involved, is not a surprise – however an exact location for the bout is yet to be determined.

WBC 160 lb champ Miguel Cotto was last out in New York and enjoys huge support from the immigrant Puerto Rican community there. Likewise Canelo in Texas with the Mexicans – he destroyed Kirkland in Houston and boxed there once before against Austin Trout.

Las Vegas – where both have boxed many times – as a ‘neutral’ venue is the favourite.

“Where will the fight be? It’s something we’ve not determined. On November 21st is a possibility but neither is entirely definite.”

“The date will be linked to the place. As I’ve said before New York and Las Vegas are viable. This is a big business. We should not dismiss Dallas, we have to see what they have. The announcement could be in July.”

With Cotto admitting in-ring after the Geale fight that he isn’t a middleweight, it’s likely we will once again see the much-discussed catch-weight employed – as Canelo himself has been gradually inching up to 160, fighting at 155 against Erislandy Lara last July.

One would expect it to be contested between 155 and 157 lbs, although obviously this is yet to be confirmed.
