Who will Oscar De La Hoya fight in comeback?

Former six-division world champion Oscar ‘Golden Boy’ De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) will be returning to the ring on July 3rd in his comeback exhibition fight on Triller against an opponent still to be determined.

As far as De La Hoya’s opponent goes, we don’t know who he’ll be fighting on July 3rd, but there’s a lot of talk that he could be facing Conor McGregor. According to ESPN, De La Hoya will be fighting a big name from the MMA world. Obviously, McGregor would be the ideal guy because of his popularity and his boxing ability.

For the fans who don’t think the 48-year-old De La Hoya is serious about his comeback, he posted a social media showing off his six-pack abs, and he looks more shredded than a julienne salad.

De La Hoya is taking the weight quickly ahead of the first of his multi-fight deal with Triller on July 3rd.

By the time the superstar De La Hoya’s fight rolls around in July, he’s going to look better than he did in his last fight 13 years ago in 2008 against Manny Pacquiao.

That’s a fight that De La Hoya likely would have won if he’d fought Pacquiao at 154 or 160, but he made the mistake of coming down to 147.

As most boxing fans would agree, De La Hoya was badly weight-drained for the Pacquiao fight, and he should have NEVER agreed to fight him at 147, a weight class that he hadn’t fought at in SEVEN years prior in 2001.

De La Hoya can make huge money

The money that De La Hoya can make from his multi-fight deal with Triller is out of this world. If De La Hoya can pull in over 2 million pay-per-view buys each time he fights on Triller, he could surpass his fortune.

According to celebrity Net Worth, De La Hoya’s net worth is approximately $200 million. It’s quite possible De La Hoya can surpass that total with his multi-fight deal with Triller if he faces the right opponents like McGregor, Pacquiao, Khabib, and Mayweather.

“I think the reason he’s doing it is Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr coming back, and it did really good and sold good,” said Robert Garcia Unfiltered on Oscar De La Hoya’s comeback plans for July 3rd.

“It was a big hit, and Chavez did it against Macho Camacho Jr. There’s been quite a few comebacks, and Oscar is a big name. He’s been loved by the boxing world for many years.

“It makes sense for him to come back, especially when there’s a lot of money running around. With these types of fights. He’s probably thinking, ‘Why shouldn’t I? I’m a big name,” said Robert Garcia.

McGregor rumored to be fighting De La Hoya

Conor McGregor is easily the best option for De La Hoya to fight on July 3rd if he’s going to be taking on a UFC guy.

Khabib is a popular fighter from the UFC, but he doesn’t have the boxing ability to hang with De La Hoya. It would be too much of a mismatch to sell it to the boxing public.

“If it’s going to be a real fighter and we’ve been hearing rumors that it’s going to be Conor McGregor,” Garcia said about De La Hoya’s possible July 3rd opponent.

“That could be a real fight,” said Robert Garcia. “I don’t think he could fight a top middleweight right now. He would probably get hurt. But if he’s fighting someone like Conor, why can’t it be a real fight?

“It makes a lot of sense,” Robert said about De La Hoya possibly fighting McGregor. “Conor isn’t a boxer; he’s a UFC fighter. It’s not horrible.

“I think Oscar could handle it. Inside the ring, he’s not horrible, but if he’s talking about doing it in a real fight against Conor McGregor, it would be huge. It’ll sell a lot of pay-per-views, and they’ll make a lot of money.

“If you sell and people pay to watch you, that’s the kind of money you’re going to make,” said Robert.

Why isn’t DAZN showing De La Hoya’s fight?

Oddly, DAZN didn’t jump on the chance to show De La Hoya’s comeback fight on July 3rd. With Oscar’s huge fan base, it would likely be the biggest fight that DAZN will have put on, particularly if De La Hoya faces McGregor.

With De La Hoya’s popularity, he’s got many great options for him to bring in huge ratings. It’s unclear whether DAZN offered De La Hoya a contract for his comeback or if he went to Triller without offering them.

It is a little strange that De La Hoya won’t be fighting on DAZN, as that’s the platform that Oscar’s Golden Boy fighters are fighting on. Given that, it makes sense that De La Hoya would fight on DAZN as well, but oh well.

These are good options for De La Hoya’s July 3rd opponent:

  • Manny Pacquiao
  • Conor McGregor
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov
  • Floyd Mayweather Jr
  • Kostya Tszyu
  • Shane Mosley
  • Felix Trinidad
  • Fernando Vargas

“That is surprising to me having his [De La Hoya] own promotion and being one of the top promoters in the world, it kind of looks weird,” said Robert about Oscar, the head of Golden Boy, who has a contract with DAZN, and recently signed to fight on Triller.

“It does kind of make his own promotion [Golden Boy] look like they’re not good enough to promote his own fight and do the events.

“It’s crazy because Triller has only done one show [Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr]. It was a success, but I’m pretty sure it was all the money they offered him.

“If it was a multi-fight deal, they probably came up with a big chunk of money that his own company might not even have.

“I don’t think he could come up to DAZN and say, ‘This is what I need to make a comeback.’ Maybe Triller was the only one that could come up with that money.

“So I don’t blame him for doing it. If Bob Arum started doing things with Triller instead of Top Rank, his own company, it is kind of weird. I’m pretty sure the money was really good, so that he couldn’t say no.
