Burns tried to come back too fast after taking a lot of punishment from Terence Crawford..

Crawford was a supremely important fight and Ricky was comprehensively beaten.. Ricky didn’t do well in his previous fight to that either, with Beltran.. You need a long rest after a couple of tough fights like that.

You always take a long vacation after a tough fight like Crawford to recharge your batteries.. The last thing you want to think about for several months is Boxing.. You still want to run a minimum number of miles. You still want to watch your diet, do some maintenance and strength training. But you don’t want to do more than 45 minutes a day, you just have a lot of fun and relax.

When you comeback you don’t necessarily fight an undefeated guy like Zlaticanin. He can make his career by sneaking up and beating you.

You fight someone maybe 16-3… or 20-5… or 35-10.. Those guys can beat you too, but at least they know how to lose.. They’re not somebody who’ll pull out every stop in the world to beat you because he doesn’t want to take that first loss and you’re a big name fighter he can make a huge splash with.

You don’t need a high pressure fight right after a big, disappointing loss. Burns has had 3 really tough fights in a row now—because most thought Beltran beat him as well.. Kevin Mitchell fought Mikheil Avakyani earlier this year – what would be wrong with fighting somebody like that after a long rest instead of Zlaticanin?

You can get back to fighting super tough opponents soon enough.

Ricky Burns conducted himself with grace though out his career & could still earn coinage. He’s never won a Lonsdale belt, so there’s an option & I’ve also heard that Hearn has mentioned a fight with Scott Harrison.

Who say’s that Ricky Burns was a 2 weight World champion? He was a 2 weight WBO title holder & that’s all. Nice chap, but never a World champion!

Posted June 29, 2014 5:54 pm

It’s not been mentioned but he’s tall enough to move up in weight and maybe he’s outgrown lightweight. He didn’t look as ripped as normal, but obviously he wouldn’t get a look in at world level at light welter so perhaps they tried to roll the dice at lightweight again.

I just think its a confidence issue (as with most sports when not winning)with Burns right now. He should of had a domestic fight and then fought someone like Zlaticanin, as this would give him more time to get to grips with his new trainer and build his moral up.

If were talking about current British lightweight’s, then surely Terry Flannigan’s the future.

actually I take back my comment about a certain promoter as he made the shot for burns in the first place and his tv channel is the best thing to happen to boxing its just annoying when he sues the guys that are putting there life on the line – its business but still

Joe, I know your on the wind up but I’ll bite anyway. Are Katsidas, Mitchell, Moses and Martinez C level? No I think not. Burns hit a high level for a albeit short period of time but he achieved more than a lot do and deserves a bit of respect.

The last post under the 1903 name wasn’t me and was a bit childish but I take issue with Freddie the hamster saying Mitchell was the smaller fighter. I’m pretty sure Mitchell went to lightweight before Burns and Mitchell got owned by Katsidas before Burns outboxed him at the same weight. The problem is burns has just hit a wall in development. Burns could beat most of the domestic guys if not all it just depends on the desire being there.

There’s more bickering then a soap opera on this site lately! Could we please get back to the subject in hand? There’s more B/S then a cow field here lately. it’s a Boxing site, so could we please converse about sport & not retarded issue’s?!!!!!

Boxing Barlow you hit the nail on the head. every fighter has there prime. ricky was lucky enough to get the chance in his prime to prove it. there is no point in closing the gate now the horse has bolted. I hope he does the right thing and retire and be remembered as a great champion. my only fear is that a certain scumbag promoter will sue him big time in there upcoming court appearance and burns is forced to continue. p.s. ESB don’t delete my post about a certain promoter if he sues me he has to prove he is not a scumbag and I fancy my chances

Hate to say it but Burns looks like a shot fighter. TheMitchell fight (against a smaller opponent) is his only good performance in his last 5 fights.

Boxing Barlow

Burns has been finished since the Mitchel fight. I dont know hwat happened but he just didnt look the same fighter when he stepped into the ring with Gonzalez. But boxing is a strange sport and fighter do mature and grow old over night. I have watched Burns’ fights for years and the Burns I seen get outclassed by Alex Arthur and Carl Johanneson would never have won world titles. I felt he had reached his limit at domestic level and would be lucky to win a British title at some point in his career. When he got a world title shot against Martinez after fighting a bunch of lower level fighters which didnt really tell you much about where Burn was at, I didnt give him any chance against a real world class fighter. When Burns went down in the first I though everything was going as I’d predicted it but Burns went into a different gear and put on a real show to win that night. However I was never really convinced and after a few okay title defences I though he would suffer the same fate as Kevin Mitchell did when he fought Katsidis and would get knocked out pretty quickly. Again though he proved me wrong and put on a great boxing performance. By the time he fought Kevein Mitchell I was convinced he was a better fighter than I’d given him credit for and had improved big time from the guy who was beat by Arthur and Johannson. However in the same way he seemed to flick a switch and move up a level the night he beat Martinez by the time he got into the ring with Gonzales he’d took that step back down. For me he’d had his day. The Arthur and Johannsen fights came too soon for him and his last 4 fights too late. there are a lot on here slating him but I think they are not looking at his career in persective. Arthur and Johansson beat him. But I doubt there are many who would claim that looking at their careers as a whole Arthur or Johanssen were better fighters than Ricky. But they both beat him. I also dont think Beltran or Zlaticanin would have beat Ricky in his prime. Crawford is a different story but I think he will go onto great things and that loss wont really be a blemish on Rickys resume.

I’ve just read that the BBBofC have Tyrone Nurse as #1 mandatory for Limond.

Posted June 28, 2014 6:56 am

I’m surprised you would need as much as a week to fight Ricky, mind you it would probably take you two days to get you’re arse of your Mums settee….then 10 mins on the heavy bag,mug of tea …3 fags and I can just see you now, middle of the ring haemorrhaging blood and shouting…Yo Adrian..Adrian yo….

Posted June 28, 2014 6:44 am

1903- I agree

Posted June 28, 2014 5:33 am

Limond was excellent last night, Limond v Saunders would be a good fight. Think Saunders might be too fresh and strong but Limond boxed last night as good as I’ve seen him in a long time.

Mick the Marmalizer

Having said that. It’s apparent that Willie Limond’s 1st defence will be against Darren Hamilton, but how about the BBBofC ordering Tyrone Nurse vs Bradley Saunders as a final eliminator?

Posted June 28, 2014 4:12 am

Mick the Marmalizer

surprize of the night for me was Kris Hughes beating Jon Slowey. I’d like to see Willie Limond defend against Bradley Saunders next.

Ricky burns fan

Ricky Burns was always a limited fighter who far exceeded the expectations of everyone,I never understood why people automatically saw Ricky as someone who would beat the elite fighters, his humble respectful and committed attitude to boxing is what makes him a star.Ricky has done tremendously well over the last few years to win a world title and defend it on several occasions and has nothing to be ashamed about. He can retire safe in the knowledge that he is a world champion. 0-2-1 last three fights is a sign and Ricky should probably leave things as they are.

lol anonymous , Europeans are b level fighters? Lmao!!! So zlaticanin is not europian ? Or what about ggg, kovalev, klitchkos etc…???

Posted June 28, 2014 2:44 am

Anonymous, don’t get upset by Boxtradamus. He is after all just the foreskin after the circumcision.

Posted June 28, 2014 12:49 am

IDK why but ….most of the European. and British. fighters …are mostly B level fighters. as soon as they face…Mexican s or americans. its …more likely they will lose…..even me that im not a professional. boxer…with a week of preparation. I would put a beating on ricky

Posted June 27, 2014 9:23 pm

So Beltran not only broke Burns jaw, he also has broke Burns spirit. Burns should hang them up, he clearly does not want to be in that ring anymore.

Tommy Toupee

@ Mark I know how annoying was that, we missed quiet a few rounds and were subjected to watching David Beckham giving an interview while they fixed the technical fault

Posted June 27, 2014 8:17 pm

lucky to have fought in a weak era. game over for burns.

Posted June 27, 2014 7:45 pm

Boxtradamus shut up you twat, your parents must be gutted to have spawned such a pathetic turd like you.

Posted June 27, 2014 7:41 pm

Burns was there for the taking after the Beltran fight and the broken jaw, he is too aware of the broken and now fights different, not the same fighter as before.

Posted June 27, 2014 7:10 pm

BT: Crawford completely humiliated Burns. It was still a good win.

Posted June 27, 2014 7:03 pm

Yes you did my friend. If only others had commonsense to FOLLOW my predictions they would be much BETTER off in life as WELL!!! But they are either too DUMB or two green with ENVY to realize I am the GREATEST!!!

Posted June 27, 2014 6:44 pm

I was CORRECT!!! Thanks to BOXTRA I went and picked up some COIN on this one!!

Posted June 27, 2014 6:41 pm

Something has gone wrong in Burns mindset. Could be the broken jaw but he covers up and retreats every time he’s hit letting his opponent come onto him, he used to hold his ground and fire back. Think he could be done.

Posted June 27, 2014 6:33 pm

Crawfords win doesn’t look good now, I take Gamboa by stoppage or wide points win.

Posted June 27, 2014 6:33 pm

Burns has no power to keep guys off him. He needs to work on this aspect of his game. Zlaticanin deserved the win, he just worked harder and hit harder. Bit of a cock up by Sky on the broadcast, I missed quite a few rounds.

Posted June 27, 2014 6:26 pm

Burns looked a shadow of himself. Don’t think we’ll see burns in the ring again after that one.
