Canelo doesn’t make 154 easy… He looked like a dried out prune for Floyd and he weighed into the ring at 172 for Trout… He didn’t set much of a pace in either fight — but especially in the Floyd fight he looked as energetic as a two toed sloth.

He’s a growing 23-year-old and his legs are huge. He’ll probably try to get a middleweight fight with the winner of Martinez-Cotto.

That will help him duck both Lara and GGG. He wants no part of them.

Joe- How exactly is Canelo killing himself to make weight? He makes 154lbs reatively easy. He is not Chavez Jr. who doesnt care about keeping in shape. Canelo is a true 154lbs. Jr. Middleweight. I remember Clottey fighting at 147lbs and would weigh-in at fight night 170lbs. NO COMPLAINS. Nobody asked Clottey to fight at middle weight. I know you are all desperate to see Canelo lose again, that much is obvious.

Cotto going for it “old school” fighting the best fighters available and at their weight….not demanding any specilal advantages in weight, ring size etc……a true warrior in anybody’s world…..wish him the best,
for few fighters will follow his footsteps…..

The Honeybadger

Maravilla has stated before he’d love a fight with Cotton at 154, but if its Cotto that’s insisting… Cotto lost to Trout, but it wasn’t by a large margin, plus he rocked Trout several times. It’s when he’d gas out is where Cotto starts to crumble. Maravillas power was what made him standout and its been diminishing each timeout. Martinez hurt mentally and physically this is actually best time for a highly confident Cotton to get back in destroyer mode one last time.

Sheriff Joe’s chicken

@ Public Enemy–“147lb Miguel Cotto picks 160lb Middleweight Sergio Martinez”

147lbs? Umm Cotto’s days at 147lbs have been long gone. He has been fighting at 154lbs for a few years. Way to overinflate egos… Cotto is all grown up and a solid middleweight.

Posted December 25, 2013 8:12 pm

It would definitely sell a few hundred thousand that is for sure. But Martinez is already talking about he needs to be respected. Normally when they start talking about that then the fight will not take place. Bad thing this is the same person who is wanting a big money fight. He needs to realize that he can’t draw much unless he is fighting at home. Not only is he benefiting from home cooking but nobody comes to watch his fights. He deserves to be compensated but is not gonna make more than Cotto

Posted December 25, 2013 1:38 pm

I’d like to see a Cotto/Martinez fight. It would sell a mess of PPV’s as well.

Bet Martinez doesn’t accept this fight.

good for miguel cotto. excellent timing for him.he is in the twilight of his career and why shouldn’t he go for the grande finale. sure martinez is the favorite, but it’s a fight that cotto can win with the right game plan.martinez isn’t hagler, but he’s tricky and illusive. people underestimate what cotto has much as i would love to see cotto knock out that kid canelo,it doesn’t make sense at this ain’t’s not like he won’t make close to that or more fighting sergio. much higher reward in the long run. be a hell of a way to close the show if he pulls it off. i will definitely be rooting for cotto.

Big Ham

Unless Sergio is completely shot, or suffers broken hands or bad injuries during the fight. I favor him in this matchup by KO. I do not think Sergio looked good in his last fight. But it is one fight only, and he had a injured knee and broken hand. I do not think he is shot yet. He has been fighting big strong and young middleweights that weigh 170-175lbs and are lean at that weight. Cotto should be at 147, he would be lean at 147 he is soft at 154. Cotto is a natural 147, Sergio is a natural 154. Miguel is brave and i admire him being up for the challenge and i think it is an interesting and competetive fight for as long as it lasts. But Miguel is going to sleep in brutal fashion. Bet your paycheck on this one guys. Cotto has been hurt by almost every world class fighter he has fought. Margs, Mosley, Corely, Torres, Pac, Even 149lb mayweather buzzed him pretty bad in round 12. Cotto has huge HEART, but he does not have a huge chin. This is a gift fight for Sergio, still great tv though.

Yo mama

Hey yo mama,
If your going to use my name you have to say cotto will beat Alvarez too.
Because that will happen easily, cotto will also beat Martinez why? Because he a better boxer, Martinez hold the left hand low so you can see it. Ots good for90% of the slugger.
That why he has trouble with boxer they watch the hand down low and can avoid that jab.
So Martinez can’t set up his right hand as the left set it up.
Cotto a boxer watches that low hand that why Floyd low left hand couldnt find the jab. That also what Floyd will have trouble with manny who as a boxer also watch the low hand. Watch Martinez face as he fights he tried to Talk to you or make faces so you look up and can’t see his low hand. Cotto over Martinez and Alvarez too.

Posted December 25, 2013 1:12 am

Cotto is the real deal. Merry Christmas to all the boxing fans.

Posted December 25, 2013 12:33 am

Young L- if you believe that. You mean like Floyd CONSTANTLY saying to the media that “Mayweather/Pacquioa fight is STILL possible?” Again, Cotto says its possible but truth is he doesnt seem intrested in fighting Canelo. The proof is in the negotiations taking place right now as you mentioned with Sergio Martinez instead of Saul Alvarez.

Posted December 24, 2013 11:13 pm

Young L- Canelo has been calling out Cotto out for a long time. Before the Mayweather fight and before the Trout fight. Cotto turn down a very good offer by GBP to fight Canelo too. So yea i think he wants no part of Canelo.

Mayweather picks Khan, Canelo picks Angulo and Cotto picks middleweight Sergio Martinez at full weight, no Catch weight bullsht, need we say anymore?

^one more: pac picked rios.

Posted December 24, 2013 10:11 pm

Well its easy math. Cotto gave Mayweather a run for his money. Mayweather easily defeated a young Canelo. Trout beat the stuffing out of Cotto. Canelo knocked down and beat Trout. So on paper it seems to even out. But really the key is in the Mayweather fight. Cotto’s jab would pose some trouble early for Canelo but Canelo’s steady pressure would eventually break down Cotto in the late fight. Thats why Cotto knows it he would lose. Martinez does not pressure, he dances around the ring, so that would give Cotto a CHANCE to rest and fire off his jab at Martinez.

Posted December 24, 2013 7:23 pm

I think Cotto is avoiding Canelo like the plague.

Posted December 24, 2013 7:12 pm

Te tumbo- Maravllla softer than Canelo. How can you say that? Sergio IS the real MW champ until proven otherwise and has more top fighters in his résumé than Canelo probably ever will. Not to mention Cotto is moving up to what amounts two divisions over his ideal weight. I say Canelo’s the one looking for what he thinks is the soft touch, fighting Angulo instead of Lara, Molina, heck even Andrade is better suited than Angulo at this stage.

Posted December 24, 2013 6:27 pm

Before Martinezs performance against Murray I wouldn’t have wanted Cotto anywhere near him but if Martinez doesn’t regain his old form Cottos got a shot. I know im getting tickets as soon as there available lets go Cotto.

Posted December 24, 2013 4:36 pm

By NO MEANS is Cotto stepping “down” or “wimping out” by opting to fight Martinez instead of Canelo…Cotto is an established fighter with a legacy that’ll surely get him in the Hall of Fame, he is arguably recognized as one of the greatest Puerto Rican fighters to ever step in the ring. Fight Canelo for nothing but a a pay day or fight Martinez for a history making opportunity? Um. Yeah. Canelo has still yet to accomplish anything in boxing other than being a paper champ (being Mathew Hatton) who was just made to look silly against Floyd…he carries a nice fan base, sure, but Cotto isn’t looking to establish a better fan base at this point in his career, it’s nearly over, he wants to make HISTORY! Good for him. Go Cotto.

Posted December 24, 2013 4:28 pm

This will be a great fight! Cotto is one of my favorites to watch because he’s always been so vulnerable in just about every fight I have seen him. Martinez also has that quality although seems to be more athletically stronger than Cotto and has fared a whole lot better even when hurt. What makes them alike is that they bring their all their very best to the ring. Fans appreciate and respect that. May the best man win this one because Martinez is no push-over and Cotto has always been a very fearless warrior, highly risk-taking champion no matter how beat up he has been. Both boxers will fight to the very last inch of their skills. This is a great PPV event even if it doesn’t make a lot of money in the likes of Mayweather or Pacquiao.

Tomato Can

I doubt Cotto can beat SM, but it’s worth a try, if that’s the fight he really wants. SM may not be done, but he’s become injury prone more than likely due to age. This is Cotto’s only real opportunity at MW.

Posted December 24, 2013 3:12 pm

Yeah I really don’t see anyone attacking Cotto, each bout would carry plenty of risk… People have short memories Martinez was knocking out BIG MW’s and doing paint jobs on guys before he got hurt… An underperformance against Martin Murray does not mean he is done and Miguel coming up in weight is showng some balls… We have fighters like Golovkin who seem to be really interested in finding smaller fighters to face….Buenos Suerte Cotto!

I understand Cotto wants to be the first boxer from PR to win a title in four divisions but this is a suicide mission. Still he gets props. If only his peers were more like Cotto, a guy who faced every tough opponent out there. Ducked nobody.

WHO has GGG beat? WHO has Canelo beat? There is your answer foolish writer! I think you should do your homework, before writing an article about Cotto. This guy has been in the ring with the best of his era. He won some and lost some, but he is one of the most classy, gentleman in the sport of boxing. Name one boxer who dislikes Cotto?

Posted December 24, 2013 2:11 pm

I have NEVER heard of Canelo disparaging Cotto and the fact is that together Cotto and Canelo would have been a big draw so whats the issue with each side seeking about… 10 mill is a BIG payday unless your name is Mayweather or Pacquiao in the sport of boxing…

Posted December 24, 2013 1:58 pm

Guys have NO clue what version of Martinez we see back in that ring… The layoff might have allowed his body to heal and he might be more than enough for Cotto as well as other guys lurking around 160… Martinez fought some TOUGH physical MW’s his last 2 bouts (Chavez Jr and Murray) its VERY premature to assume Sergio has become a walkover opponent….

Posted December 24, 2013 1:48 pm

te tumbo – When (if) Canelo beats the kinda competition and can accomplish what Cotto has, he can talk…Cotto has EARNED the right to pick whoever he wants to fight, at least he’s wants to take on THE lineal Middleweight champion, he’s fought in 3 weight divisions and is eager to fight in ANOTHER…that’s a good thing. If he wins he’ll have won a title in FOUR weight divisions, this being for “the championship”. We’ll see if Canelo can someday even come close to that, we’ll see if he can one day beat the best at 160 and 175lbs…..cause that’s what he’ll have to do to even be considered as great as Cotto.

Posted December 24, 2013 1:47 pm

Cotto has PROVED time and time again that he ducks NO ONE…he’s fought some of the best in the world, he’s won most and he’s lost some, but he ALWAYS comes to fight and ALWAYS comes to win. He’s a sure lock Hall of Famer, no question. I think he deserves to choose what’s best for him and his legacy, there is NO shame in opting to take on the Middleweight champion in hopes of being a 4-weight division champion. Go Cotto!!!

I agree with TeTumbo. “what “rivalry”?” A small island against a whole country? Doesn’t sound like a level playing field. Mexico probably has more boxers than the whole population of PR.

what “rivalry”? if there actually were such a thing, Canelo v. Cotto would be mandatory. however, since the “rivalry” is nothing more than a contrived promotional tool, Cotto is able to shrug Canelo off in favor of presumably softer competition. go home folks. thanks to Cotto, there is no “rivalry” to enjoy here and Cotto’s avoidance of Canelo proves it . . . Btw, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good Fight.

He is the Lineal Champ but he never defended the Championship against the best in his division. He defended against people who had no titles. The best in the division called him out and he said they where unknown and didn’t bring any money to the table. Martinez also brings no money to the table. Didn’t want to fight Pirog or Quillen. Constantly calling out smaller fighters. Also he lost against Murray but Murray got robbed.

Some random guy

The fight against ginger boy will still be there win or lose. Cotto is the 3rd biggest draw in boxing

Posted December 24, 2013 11:29 am

Cotto deserved the fight against Delvin Rodriguez, as I believe every fighter needs to have a not so tough fight every now and them, especially after two consecutive loses. Also, I believe the fight against Martinez has more to do with making history than money. As opposed to other Puerto Rican fighters, Cotto has done well financially and has taken good care of his wealth. He’s seeking another title on a different division, and fighting Martinez, particularly at both fighters stage in their careers is his best move.

Choosing Martinez is the right move because he doesn’t have much to lose. If he loses, it’s against a middleweight and can always go back to 154. If he wins, he’ll accomplish his dream of getting a title at a different division and make history. Not just that, but if he wins, then he’ll get a much bigger purse against GG or Canelo. In my opinion, it doesn’t make sense for him to fight the much younger and dangerous GG for the middleweight crown at this point because he’ll get less money for the increased risk.

Cotto can do what he wants but I would rather see him fight Canelo… That’s the fight I wanted to see for a long time even before either one fought Mayweather… I think Cotto and Canelo is a real good matchup and a PPV fight.. I don’t think Cotto and Martinez is a PPV fight and if it is I sure as hell wont be buying it.. Why isn’t Martinez fighting GGG, aren’t they the same weight class??

Posted December 24, 2013 10:15 am

Actually this is for money. I believe he was offered 10 mil to fight Canelo and Arum offered him 15 mil to fight Martinez.

Cotto in my eyes is an admirable and exciting fighter, kudos to him if he wants to fight Martinez at middleweight. Anybody who fights for legacy as a priority over money is a very noble and admirable attribute to any fighter. It is not like an elite fighter who makes his own criteria of opponents who says , ” Oh, it’s not worth fighting him because he’s not a ppv attraction, etc., etc.””. All the best, Mr. Cotto..

Posted December 24, 2013 10:12 am

I see no problem with this fight. Martinez can’t make 154 which is why he said earlier that if he where to fight Cotto it would have to be at 160. Cotto wants to try and make history. No issues with that. But Martinez career is overrated. All this talk of he deserves to get a big fight is weak. He never took on the real challenges in his weight class. Everybody that called him out that had a title he said they where nobodies and brought no money. Martinez himself also brings no money. I hope Cotto beats him. Martinez legs are messed up with his knee problems.

I would like Cotto to get the biggest $$$$ possible but Miguel Cotto has EARNED the right to face whomever he wants at this level… This writer is an idiot Cotto has faced the best fighters of the generation without complaint… If he wants to take a crack at 160, then so be it…

Posted December 24, 2013 9:20 am

Boxing Barlow, that’s pretty much all I’m saying, this pattern of guys acting like their favorite fighter “is the man” or marginalizing the true Champion is NUTS… You would NEVER hear me say that Wlad Klitschko is not the most dominant boxer of his era including his brother… Every metric we have establishes his status, same for Ward at 168, hate or love these guys they have the hardware…

Posted December 24, 2013 9:18 am

@ Prince: he is doing both of those things. I personally think Martinez is too big for him, but if Cotto can beat any 160lbs champ it is Sergio.

Posted December 24, 2013 8:49 am

The KO Prophet

Let’s get something straight. First of all triple G is not the best fighter in the division until he gets his chance to prove it. Martinez is much more accomplished and has not been beating up on relative bums as triple G has. Now that that is out-of-the-way Cotto is all about legacy versus money and realizes money will come with legacy most of the times. Unlike Mayflower Who in 20 years now will be known as a supreme talent who avoided and Did not participate fights.

And last but not least the prediction that you all have been waiting for from me. I predict Martinez wins a unanimous decision, make no mistake about it I am the real fight prophet and the greatest. All the fakes will be put by the wayside

Posted December 24, 2013 7:21 am

boxing barlow

Fair play to Cotto for looking at this fight though. Whats to achieve by beating Canelo? He’s already won a belt at light middle. Martinez is still recognised as the number one in the division and if Cotto was to snatch a win it would be something special to be able to say he has won belts from light welter all the way up to middleweight. Cotto’s punch power has not been an effective tool to back opponents up though from fighting larger welterweights up to light middle weight so he its not going to be effective against Martinez at middle. Therefore Cotto would have to put on a master display of boxing to grab a points win on the back foot against a skilled guy like Martinez. Can he do it? I doubt it but he has given boxing enough over the years to deserve the shot.

Posted December 24, 2013 7:07 am

SREDMOND – Pains me to say it, but Im with you on this one. Martinez has beat the likes of Pavlik (linear champ who held all the belts at one point), Williams (highly rated fighter), Macklin (should have been a unification fight as Macklin beat Sturm), Barker (former IBF Champ) and Murray (world class fighter). GGG on the other hand has just one ‘named’ middleweight on his record in Macklin. Ok he looks awsome and I think my money would be on GGG were they to fight but the reality is until that happens, or until GGG goes and beats 3 or 4 other decent fighters GGG remains behind Martinez in my book.

Posted December 24, 2013 6:55 am

Guys wanna hand Golovkin the keys to boxing while he fights a succession of mediocre fighters… The Lineal and Ring Champ at 160 is Martinez unless he retires or gets beat this year… If Golovkin is the goods he will eventually prove it in the ring against the right opponents as opposed to dopey writers trying to fast track him to Greatness while he lines up bouts with journeymen and 154 pounders…

Posted December 24, 2013 5:55 am

A gamble worth taking for Cotto
If . . . And it’s a big if he beats Martinez then $10 Million will be nothing compared to what he is offered by FMM for a rematch
Floyd hasn’t got the gonads to take on Martinez himself but if Cotto wins, then Floyd sees it a quick route to a Miiddleweight belt
Floyd jumps divisions, avoids risks but the History books will show a Middleweight belt around his waist

Lol Cotto wants to fight in the weight class Canelo should be fighting in. Cotto fights the best and wants that middle weight title. Canelos resume is no where close to Martinez. If Cotto wins I would be surprised is he defends it against Golovkin. Another fighter built up with a weak resume.

Cheers to that. I’m not sure when it was that fight fans started to care about fighters’ financial positions… most of us just want to see good fights.

The money hungry buffoons don’t understand that Cotto has earnt enough of the green. He understands that from his upbringing, what can you do with $15,000,000 that you can’t do with $10,000,000. Cotto continues to build a legacy and wants titles, belts and reputation. This is a good thing by the way. It is something other so-called champs and contenders could learn from. Cotto fights for the fans and wants to give them entertainment. He isn’t about himself or the highest $$$$$ for least risk. Canelo you all say, hahaha, did you see Canelo in his last? Couldn’t pull the trigger or aggressively hunt down a feather fisted Floyd. Cotto gave FMJ a much harder fight and a fan friendlier fight too. This is what Cotto is about, the people, not fake reps or $$$$.

Sergio Martinez really wants this fight ..Martinez hates Miguel Cotto .. Martinez has said before that Cotto is a very rude guy . Martinez will definitely be in top shape if this fight happens . Martinez will definitely punish Cotto when they fight .

I agree with this writer . Cotto will make less money fighting Martinez then fighting Alvarez . Martinez is not a big PPV star . the most Cotto will make is around $ 4 to $ 5 million fighting Martinez . Which is good money but not like getting $ 10.000.000 fighting Alvarez .

Sergio beats Cotto because Cotto is MORE shop-worn than Martinez is…plus Sergio is bigger, can move & can punch; way too many advantages. Sergio by KO.

Way better decision to take Martinez instead of Canelo. It’s hard to say whether it will pay better or worse… Canelo’s pulling power may have diminished after the Mayweather trouncing.
Saying Martinez isn’t a draw is probably a bit misleading. Aside from Chavez Jr, he’s not been able to pull an opponent that can draw their side of the PPVs since Pavlik (or arguably the Williams rematch which would’ve been more attributable to the action of the first fight than to either fight in particular). I do believe that when Martinez is in with stiff competition, more PPV buyers come out of the woodwork to watch (i.e. I wouldn’t have paid for Martinez-Barker for example, but I’d pay to watch him in with Golovkin or probably even Cotto).

The other thing to consider is that Martinez is looking very beatable lately, and seeing Murray (a tough guy, but not a puncher by any means) walk down and knock down Martinez would have been very encouraging for Cotto. Match that with Cotto’s general success against “moving” fighters, and he’s in with a decent chance of an upset.

In terms of Canelo, the only upside for Cotto in that match is money. Canelo’s reputation has already taken a severe beating after the Mayweather fight (one that I don’t at all agree with), so if Cotto wins, people will say “So what? Canelo was over-rated”… and if Cotto loses, then even worse coz he lost to an “over-rated fighter”.

The Prince

So is Cotto now cherrypicking Martinez, or is he making a smart business choice? The answer depends on the people who are fans and the ones who are detractors.
