“When fans are cutting your FACE in the back of their heads that’s called GREATNESS.” No, it’s called IDIOCY. The fool who did it will realize that when he’s 50. But hey, he’ll let his hair grow out to cover it.

I never said that Floyd was the greatest boxer ever. I just think he is an all time great. That is it.

Once Floyd start to feel the powerful punches of a NONE CHERRYPICKIN YOUNGER STRONGER BIGGER FASTER UNDEFEATED OPPONENT his speed body and soul will CRUMBLE for EVER.

Floyd needs notable fighters to generate ratings otherwise no one really cares to watch his fight.

TJ… You make an excellent point…

Ray Leonard was out of Boxing 2 years and fought unknown Kevin Howard. After that lackluster effort, he retired for 3 more years—and decided he wanted Hagler. Marvin was inactive—fighting once a year in 1985, 1986, and 1987, which he was allowed to do by his orgs. Hagler ignored the top ranking middleweights to fight Leonard.

What people don’t understand about Boxing—it was never necessarily about the best fighting the best. It’s about charisma, personality, hype, glamour, million dollar smiles, building a fan base—and avoiding people who can beat you. The best fights go begging for years. Many never take place at all—depending on who built the best old boy network connections and hype machine—which is your publicity machine that builds your public acclaim.

Leonard’s name was magic. He was hyped to the skies after he beat Hagler. Ray never defended the title he won from the marvelous one—because the top ranking middleweights were genuine threats to beat him.

The Lalonde fight was ingenious. It got Ray another title to defend. Leonard simply ignored the 175 pound title. He defended the 168-pound “vacant” title he won from LaLonde against anybody he wanted at 160. That was the weight Ray felt most comfortable at following the Hagler fight.

Mike McCallum, Michael Nunn, and Julian Jackson won the pieces of the splintered middleweight title stripped from Leonard, for failure to defend it. There was pressure brought on Leonard to fight any of the three—since he was fighting at the same weight. That’s when Leonard’s team eyed Terry Norris—a man Jackson crushed with a devastating KO a few fights earlier. Norris had a 154-pound title and seemed to have a vulnerable chin.

Even the smartest miscalculate in this game… Leonard had a woeful night.

What annoys me the most is that there isn’t another truly great welterweight going around that would trouble Money, no one to truly test how great he is,it a shame, he’s had it aALL his own way really.

Posted July 4, 2013 10:34 am

what TJ says, right on.

Posted July 4, 2013 10:30 am

SC I actually think he should fight Canelo at 154 but Canelo didn’t need to take the fight at 152, but he did so……
Mayweather is a true welterweight that’s why he don’t like fighting at 154 but if that’s the belt he holds then yes vacate or fight at the right weight.
but like Tark says, when your top of the game you get to call the shots, that’s just how it is,unfortunately.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

You really need to point the finger at both MANNY PACQUIAO and SUGAR RAY LEONARD for using their stature to manipulate the governing bodies into allowing them to compete for a 154 title where the opponent was not only stipulated a weight he could not come in above, but also how much he was to rehydrate to and finally coming off a year’s suspension at a weight he had not fought at for years in ANTONIO MARGARITO…

In RAY LEAONARD’S case he was one of the first people to demonstrate to me (as a young boy) how cynical boxing can be, by asking Light Heavyweight champ DONNY LALONDE to lose half a stone in order to make 168 so that HE, SRL could win 2 titles at diifferent weights in the same bout!

That was one of the first things to wake me up to the fakeries of boxing annd I’ve been pointing them out ever since.

It seems these days that once you hit the top and are a BIG enough attraction, or have a powerful promoter or are favoured by the organisations of choice you can do almost anything…. No matter how shameful, so long as it brings in the dollars to all concerned!

This is the real issue here

Only then will this crap stop in our sport!

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

KOrnerman: Then what you are really saying is that FMJ must vacate or be stripped of his major 154lbs titles because he’s supposedly not big enough to defend them vs, elite opposition.

Just admit it, man. FMJ is a four division world champion, NOT a five division world champion, He refuses to defend his paper Jr. MW titles at 154lbs because he knows he’ll get beat. That’s why he outright refused to fight Canelo at 154lbs — his very own weight class.

But FMJ still calls himself the Jr. MW Champion of the world and refuses to vacate like a man with integrity and class. What you gotta say now???

Posted July 4, 2013 7:23 am

The Golden Boy

Mayweather saw no PPV action until he faced De La Hoya.

Posted July 4, 2013 6:13 am

I think Floyd could beat Mattyesse and Garcia on the same night, as for GGG he’s a middleweight man don’t you think that’s a bit big for a guy who started at lightweight? I do, Floyd fighting at 154 is as heavy as he can go and be the best then sheer mass takes over.

Posted July 4, 2013 5:53 am

Yeah Tark I agree,everyone has a nemesis, Mayweather just hasn’t found his…..yet.

Posted July 4, 2013 5:49 am

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

TARK: Well that really depends on who FMJ picks for his last few fights. I give him much respect for fighting Canelo, but will he choose Alexander, Khan, Broner and other walk-overs and for his last few fights?

Or will he man-up and face dangerous opposition like 3G, the winner of Garcia vs. Matthysse, PacMan, etc.

The true-to-life GOAT would NOT avoid top-dogs who can easily make his own weight at 154lbs or below, like 3G, Maravilla, Lara, Kirkland, Thurman, etc.

The title of GOAT is generally designated for HWs, and is far to great for FMJ, considering that he lost to Castillo in their first fight; almost lost to past-prime ODLH; avoided prime PacMan and has cherry-picked opponents for many years.

A true GOAT is someone who fought all prime opposition of his era without going to great lengths to protect and avoid losing his precious “O”.

Posted July 4, 2013 5:21 am

For me.. Right now.. At this particular time.. Floyd is the GOAT.. That could change Sept 14th..

A lot of people said Roy Jones was the GOAT.. Then he fought Tarver.

Some folks said Leonard was the GOAT.. Then he fought Norris.

People said Tyson was the GOAT.. Then he fought Douglas.

Some said Ali was the GOAT.. Then he fought Frazier and Norton.

People even said Foreman was the GOAT… Louis… Johnson… Pep… Dempsey… Tunney… Lewis… Vitali… Robinson… Charles… Duran… Monzon… A few said Benvenuti… Armstrong… Burley… Calzaghe… If Floyd goes undefeated to 49 or 50 wins, he might hold the distinction for a generation.

Hecdog…, we know you hate Floyd and love Pacquiao… OK??? We get it.

Some Floydiot said, …. “And stand there face to face and see who hits the hardest and who has the biggest b@lls. Thats called MMA.”

You know nothing about MMA.. That’s NOT MMA.

MMA players can’t fight like boxers because the gloves are so much smaller and more lethal.. Punches cannot be blocked as readily so hiding behind your “gloves” is virtually impossible.. Movement and position mean so much more because one good blow can get you going more easily.

Boxing is an important part of MMA — but it’s a small part of what MMA players have to master.

The thing that I find the hardest is to talk about boxing with people outside of these sites, because they only heard of Floyd,Pac, and Tyson. So I just like to talk about the sport we all love, and if we disagree so what, if we agree so what, but we all will be back tomorrow reading. These are the sites I visit Boxingtalk,Fighthype, eastsideboxing, maxboxing, and doghouse boxing. I’m a Fan of FM because I seen him grow through the yrs when everyone was calling Roy the GOAT, and to be doing what he is doing for 17 yrs says alot love him or hate him.

Floyd is a great that will only be appreciated when he is done boxing. You can take any boxers record and break it down. There are probably a handful of them where you could say he took on every tough opponent when they where in there prime. Floyd has only missed a few fighters and some of that had to do with the fact that he was contracted to HBO and others fighters where contracted to Showtime.

Posted July 3, 2013 1:15 pm

Toosalty-my comment was in refernce to meaningful numbers generated from a PPV event, not that it was his first. Floyd’s 1st PPV event was against Gatti in 05′ where Floyd was already 28ys old. Canelo at only 22ys without any PPV history already managed to land his first PPV against the best P4P and so called PPV king. What does that tell you? Floyd needs notable fighters to generate rateings otherwise no one really cares to watch his fight. For being the “face of boxing” as he puts it, he should be able to generate enough excitement outside of his own fanbase to carry PPV events but he doesn’t, which is why he needs Alvarez. Floyd knows this

Obviously PRIMO wasn’t one of those 3 posters I was referring to. He actually seems to have his head screwed on straight, which is a rarity on here.

Posted July 3, 2013 11:52 am

PRIMO you are wrong Floyd 1st PPV was Gatti then Judah and the big one was ODH. Canelo has never had a PPV fight. so he is doing the same thing you are denounce Floyd of.

Posted July 3, 2013 11:47 am

HANGMAN your first post is spot on, plus Mayweather saw no PPV action until he faced De La Hoya. Floyd cried and whined his way to a fight with ODH. Even now the “highest paid athlete in the world” needs somebody like the 22yr old Alvarez to generate record breaking numbers. What kind of numbers was Floyd bringing in at 22yrs??? None

Posted July 3, 2013 11:40 am

Bottom line is Floyd is a boxer not a one rd KO wizzard. There are other boxers that ride the bike and throw 2 punch combos that never get this hate.

Floyd will win again and then you all will say it was boring…..Geeeeezzzzz….not everybody is a smash crack EM up fighter….some think in the ring.

I’m not a hater. I’m a realist and unlike your nut-hugger self I’m also a knowledgeable fan who’s had the privilege of watching many a great fighter in the flesh down the years.

Floyd Mayweather has talent and had he had the belief in himself as you deluded fan boys do then perhaps he could’ve become as great as you try to make out he is, but the fact is he didn’t and he only has his cowardice and aversion to risk taking to blame for that.

Posted July 3, 2013 10:45 am

Floyd Mayweather is the most BORING boxing champion in the history of boxing hands down. People don’t pay money to see some good athlete hit his opponent once, hug, hold and sprint away. Mayweather is embarrassing to watch when you compare some current and past boxing champions or even some current boxers. He always let’s down fans that come to see a fight, and what he does is simply boring and ugly. He doesn’t bring excitement to a boxing ring. Sure he has good defense, but he can’t fight inside at all because he’s scared to death to get hit, he never throws more than a two punch combination because he’s always looking to get out of harm’s way, and he has no power. Yeah we can look at his athleticism, speed and reflexes, but fans want to see if the guy has the heart and courage to get through adversity like Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones, JC Chavez, Ali, Duran,, SR Robinson and other legitimate boxing champions. They took chances and proved what kind of character they have. Mayweather has proven during his career that he avoids all real challenges (A prime Mosely, Tyszu, Pacquiao). And now he takes on a guy (Canelo) that Intelligent fight fans know is not ready. Seriousl, someone please tell me exactly what qualifies Canelo for this match. Beating Trout? Canelo is a strong young kid with lot’s of potential, and that’s it. What will Mayweather fight Canelo like? Take a guess. Floyd Mayweather is a great athlete and a very good boxer, but he does not stand alongside past greats.

I’m a real boxing fan for 42 yrs, what some of you guys are talking about including this writer I don’t understand. The reference to real boxing fans, this guy in my opinion dont know what a real boxing fan is. Real fan appreciate the sweet science not just knock outs. I like knock outs and loved watching Tyson, Chavez and others give the fans some great knock outs. I also watch Vlad klitcho and see a guy take no chances run from his opponents to try an make them run into his punches. I find his fights the most boring because of his style of no slipping punches but running. when I watch floyd and he slips punches with his hand down and stey within range to return a counter punch. Yeah I like that, when he dances around the ring too much yes boring. But, Floyd is giving his opponent opportunities that they haven’t been able to capitalize on. It’s not his fought tf they can’t. Now, this writer is just trying to continue the cherry picker myth the haters have been trying to pin on Floyd his whole career. I would challenge you so called boxing experts to go back and look up post fight interviews and see who call out who and haw many fighter turned down fights with Mayweather. Then also take a close look at when Mayweather and Cotto fought. Here’s a clue it was after Cotto left Bob Arum, and look back on why Mayweather left Bob Arum. Check some history then re-write your article.

Hang man you dont know what the hell you are talking about, the has beens he has beatin are the ones yall/media hype up. He called out Mosley after he beat Oscar the 2nd time but Mosley had a toothache. He called out Cotto, but Bob would not let him anywhere near his puertorican money maker. He put on a boxing clinic for ODH the score cards lied, I had money on ODH because i thought he was too big, floyd won dam near every round go back and watch the fight. he beat an undefeated Hatton, which was a bum that yall/the media hyped up that fight. He beat an undefeated Diego that was blowing people away at the time, which he was waaay bigger and stronger. Beat yall boy Castillo twice, the 1st time with a broken had, 2nd time it was not even close. The same way YALL/the Media is hyping up this new BUM. Go watch Canelo fights, man he is a bum, beating up smaller guys, then he face someone his size and they steal the fight from him. People love or Hate FM but what he figured out is that YALL hate him sooooo much, that YALL/Media will build up a super hero make them look good then FM knows that in Yall hoping that he will lose, you will spend your hard earned money on a new BUM with no SKILLS in hopes of the new BUM beating him. That is Marketing 101 HANG MAN YOU JUST BEEN HUNG
