Hidalgo, your pea brain in a vain effort to rebutt me is going to say “Marquez was in PPV’s” yes he was AS THE B SIDE and he was paid like a bar maid relative to PAC Man and Mayweather because his contribution to sales was fractional… Again let’s see Marquez and Bradley even clip 500k in PPV I’d be surprised despite JMM’s greatness… This is business your feminine emotions only brand you the fool…

Posted May 19, 2013 3:24 pm

Hidalgo, no I am RIGHT this notion that these undercard fighters drive these HUGE PPV numbers is BS and is another pathetic attempt to attribute Mayweathers or Pacquiaos success to 3rd parties… I know you’re limited as a thinker Hidalgo do I try to make allowances for your intellectual shortfalls…Follow the money!!!!! Floyd has headlines PLENTY of PPV’s meanwhile how many have Mares, Marquez, Ponce De Leon, Guerrero, or Canelo headlined??? NONE they have been but players in Mayweather productions and have received peanuts for their efforts because they don’t sell like the Boss…When you have PPV data to support their market value give me a call it’s just like Tom Cruise or Will Smith they take the Lions share because people pay to see them…. Like a CHILD you say the VP of Showtime “could be lying” which by extension means he could be telling the truth… He has out his name and credibility on the line whereas Rafael’s “sources” remain hidden and could be lying and inaccurate… I go with the official version over the rumor mill… But of course your conspiracy prone brain will seize upon any anti-Mayweather sentiment like fanatic…

Mayweather f up he should of had Canelo on his under card. He is great fighter he should be able to beat Canelo at 154 with not changing any rules. The thing is everybody know Mayweather will not be Oscar due to he is not Hispanic and a very un likable attitude. And also show time boxing needs to improve there boxing broadcasting. That is also going to put numbers down in Mayweather in future fights. Mayweather was smart to have that contract deal done. But these next few fights with out a big name Mayweather brand is headed down the toilet.

Posted May 19, 2013 2:52 pm

If they do fight there should be no catch weight. Those type of fights should not be a option for titles. That make it unfair for all other boxers that are trying to win a title.

Posted May 19, 2013 2:37 pm

Vato Loco

Everyone knows mayates don’t like to buy anything especially PPV thats why HBO dumped Mayweather, they went through that with Roy Jones who never sold any ppv either. By himself Mayweather is not a major draw plus he doesn’t want to fight anyone good.

Posted May 19, 2013 2:13 pm

Let me rephrase: Mares/De leon were likely, in part, a good draw for this event, but not HUGE–that was Mayweather/Guerrero’s job.

Posted May 19, 2013 1:22 pm

“The VP of Showtime ITSELF SAID it did over million.” So? The VP of Showtime could be lying. As for Pacquaio needing to sell more PPV’s to make the same amount as Mayweather did at 870,000 PPVs, well, that’s wrong too. If Pacquiao fight PPV’s were priced at $70.00 and he sold 1.5 mil PPVs, obviously his fight would easily make more than Mayweather/Guerrero did.

Roots, you’ve obviously never watched Duran fight as a lightweight. You need to do some homework. Duran was a great boxer and he is a legit ATG.

Q, Face It: the primary reason Floyd(?) was able to even attract 870K PPV buys was the undercard of Mares v. Ponce. it was the primary reason i tuned-in. i considered Mayweather v. Guerrero to be little more thab an anti-climactic chaser. if Canelo had remaind on the May 5 undercard, this bout would’ve easily attracted 1.3K PPV buys. they’re adding seats by the thousands at the last minute to accommodate the overflow wanting to pay to watch Canelo v. Trout(?!). who the f’k is Trout!? conversely, they gave away seats and were still not able to completely sell-out a 15,000-seat venue for Floyd v. Guerrero and spare me the contrived mathematical formulas. Canelo v. Guerrero sells out any 15,000-seat venue any day of the year but especially on Cinco de Mayo. that’s why Floyd the businessman has selected May 5 and September 16 as his personal fight-nights. Get It?

Showtime is part of CBS which is a publicly traded company with over 14 billion in annual revenue.. As a public company they have to file quarterly reports with the SEC, that are subject to scrutiny… I seriously doubt they are going to openly fudge fight numbers and risk issues with the SEC to make Mayweather look a little better… Rafael is a good writer but he’s NOT an insider at Showtime so he’s relying on 3rd party info…They are saying over 1 mill so it is what it is…

Posted May 19, 2013 7:04 am

Hello the guy sold 870000. Why is that a problem? That’s a lot of money. That’s not too short of a million. That’s incredible. Man people will argue about anything. Sheesh!

Posted May 19, 2013 3:27 am

Q, I agree with you that the argentinian is red hot and deserves to fight
danny garcia next, no doubt, I mean he reminds me of a prime julio ceasar chavez. punches with conviction, cuts the ring , takes a wicked shot, goes to the body, I mean lucas is great, he made Peterson look like silly. but, he is 140, mayweather fights at 147 and 154, he would be a blown up like Guerrero was, not a good fight.

Posted May 19, 2013 1:45 am

Enrique, Canelo is irrelevant, he doesn’t deserve that bout more than guess like Bradly, Mathyssee etc, and nobody has to physically sabotage themselves to make those bouts. Canelo blows up to Light HW but won’t fight a GGG? listen, we’ll agree to disagree on these things, I think Lucas is a far better fighter than Canelo, and more proven and dangerous in FMJ’s actually weight bracket, it’s a no brainer. Guerrero was an unknown no name… 870,000 for that with $75 tickets is a big big profit and big number unless you can tell me factually otherwise. I’m sure there are at least 5 names that will pull in over 870,000 buys if he did that with Guerrero who has no fan base at all.

Posted May 19, 2013 1:41 am

Enrique: He left because he didn’t get the money he wanted under the situations, he’s at the end, he fights once a year… he was coming out of jail, he’s planning on retiring after 5 bouts and his near 40. Yes, they didn’t give him what he wanted for a reason, and someone else did, for a reason. Everything else I’ve written remains.

Posted May 19, 2013 1:35 am

hey Q. consider this, hbo let mayweather go for a reason,
they have been doing boxing for awhile , they didn’t
give him the money he wanted cause they know the boxing
game and felt it was to risky to keep him on, i feel showtime
is going to loose big time, unless they can convince fm to fight
pac or canelo.

hey Q the fact that Canelo pulled out of the may 4th card, is the main reason
for the poor ppv number of mayweather, the importance of the latino market in boxing is
undeniable, the latinos did not come out for Guerrero because thay are
knowledgeable about boxing they knew that the fight was a farce.

Posted May 18, 2013 9:29 pm

Hey, woth 32 million, i’d be pretty happy. I’m sure Showtime turned a profit. And it’s only the start

Posted May 18, 2013 8:19 pm

Also, if you get a Mayweather v Pacquiao trilogy, one fighter wins the first fight, the other wins the second fight, both fights were great, then the 3rd fight, that’s 10 million PPV minimum for 3 fights, off the scale.

Posted May 18, 2013 8:02 pm

Enrique: 800,000+ is above what 99% of fighters make, even if that number stands true. And Floyd did over a million with Mosley, so I don’t see your point, be happy those latino fighters got that payday against FMJ, because apparently there latinoism doesn’t do it for them in all there other fights. Lol.

Posted May 18, 2013 7:58 pm

Yeah Guerrero, Mares and Ponce are HUGE PPV attractions, in guys imaginations … Those guys could not sell a PPV to save their lives… These guys are secretly always the attraction but they get paid peanuts and they NEVER headline any PPV cards??? I detect a severe paucity of intellect in these fighters… Lol

Posted May 18, 2013 7:32 pm

the truth is , the winner in all of this is hbo, they saw mayweather as problamatic, only reason for his high ppv’s is for his latin opponents (except for mosley) , however, with Guerrero a lot of us smelled a skunk….they
are trully lucky if they got 870K, if he does not fight Canelo next, I dont see
him pulling 500.000 buys , people got burned with his last fight, and many will not buy again!!!

Posted May 18, 2013 7:31 pm

Showtime says 1 million plus, they are paying the bills and have direct access to the data…Floyd made 32 million for working over Guerrero.. Even Rafael has to note his “sources” because he does NOT work do HBO… We have heard this banter before but alas Mayweathers the highest paid athlete in the world and has an unprecedented guarantee of 32 million for his next 5 fights…Canelo can fight or not fight but he’s not getting a 20 pound advantage over a smart fighter like FMJ, this is NOT Gatti against Joey Gamache…

Posted May 18, 2013 7:29 pm

CORRECTION. …Pacquiao would probably have to sell 1.5 million PPV to make what Floyd makes off of 870k.

Posted May 18, 2013 7:23 pm

Rafael’s sources are POOR. The VP of Showtime ITSELF SAID it did over million. Even IF it did 870 k at $70 a POP thats $60 million. Thats not including the $10 million gate. Floyd was guaranteed $32 million which will be the highest purse of the YEAR unless he tops HIMSELF. The POINT is everyone made money. Guerrero was only guaranteed $3 million. Thats called making money. Pacquiao who is the next highest money maker would probably have to sell $1.5 million just to get make what Mayweather makes off of 870k because Arum takes 30-40%.

That’s must-see TV, not routine title defenses by cherry picker Floyd.

Posted May 18, 2013 7:04 pm

Mayweather can have an EZ huge PPV fight in the UK vs Amir Khan.. he can also rematch Miguel Cotto and still easily make 1.5 Mill PPV’s with the latinos buying the PPV…a Huge PPV vs Paquiao once Paquiao flushes Dumb Dumb Rios down the toilet.. No need for Canelo…

Posted May 18, 2013 6:28 pm

Lets face it, the fight didn’t sell because Pacquiao is out of the picture for the time being! Mayweather always had about 250k or more buys just because of the potential of a fight between him and Pacquiao. But I bet you this. Pacquiao vs Rios will do over a million. Guaranteed. Pacquiaos fights sell because of his exciting style. The worst thing Mayweather can do is let the potential of a fight between him and Pacquiao fade from the general publics eyes!

Posted May 18, 2013 5:14 pm

DJ Daz

You can bet that Showtime won’t continue to fund Mayweather $33 million purses if his continues to fight to do PPV numbers that don’t warrant those kind of dollars. You can also bet that a lot of the people who bought his fight with Guerrero fight thought “Well that was dull & boring” like myself and won’t part with hard earned money for future Mayweather fights. I might be tempted to buy a PPV if Floyd fought Canelo at 154 with no clauses or Pacquiao, but in my heart I figure that Mayweather would beat both men EASILY and more importantly boringly and I’d be disappointed that I had put more money into a man’s pockets who didn’t live up his side of the deal. Mayweather might be the best boxing in the world, maybe one of the best boxing talents ever, but that alone shouldn’t result in the money he is making. I can assure you there are much better singers in the world than Beyonce Knowles that barely get by, but she entertains her fan base and that is why she earns the big dollars, not because she is the best. I don’t any boxing fan with any knowledge could question Floyd’s brilliant ability, what I am saying and every other boxing fan should be asking is why isn’t Floyd doing what he is paid the big bucks to do and entertain the people paying to see him. Some die hard FLoyd fans might call me a hater, but I’m calling FLoyd a TAKER! Floyd is taking Showtime and all boxing fans as fools and he is not giving the entertainment value that he say he is worth. I think Floyd really needs the Canelo if has any hope in hell of getting the PPV numbers needed to fund his ridiculously overpaid purses. If I was Canelo, I’d fight Cotto for the rumoured $10 mill I’ve been hearing, a fight I think he has a 75% chance of winning. If Mayweather fights pretty much anyone else other than Canelo or Pacman the PPV sales won’t warrant his contracted paydays and I can assure you that a corporation like Showtime won’t bleed cash like that for long!

Posted May 18, 2013 5:00 pm

They will probably have to renegotiate the contract, can’t see Showtime letting Mayweather fight easy fights for low PPV.

Mayweather should be fighting Pacquiao and Canelo for the contract he is on, not Guerrero etc, if he loses, tough he doesn’t get as much money, Showtime took a silly gamble.

Bob Arum is a better promoter than Golden Boy…Look at all the stars he created from the ground up even Mayweather who owes his whole career to Arum…..Golden Boy only has Canelo as it’s top home grown Star..Where Bob Arum had Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Oscar De La Hoya, he had a 22 year old Shane MOsley but a law suit killed that….

Mares/De Leon was a great fight and well worth watching. I’m sure a lot of people paid to see that fight as well. And, as I’ve said before, I also thought Mayweather/Guerrero was “anti-climatic.” It proved to be exactly that. As well as a very safe fight for FMJ.

Posted May 18, 2013 3:11 pm

mayweather is good enough to be called great. some special crafting of his career no doubt. but when you discuss the greats duran, robinson, hagler, hearns, leonard and you look at floyds comp who are they not gonna walk through? if floyd fought in those times and multiple fights with those guys, who believes his zero would be in tact? who among you believe his zero would be in tact? those guys fought eachother and got damaged. floyd would be damaged too. its hypothetical but thats what i think when we draw comparissons. also you have to factor in the fake retiring and ducking when it comes to floyd and it puts an asterisk** next to anything he has done. for me anyway

Posted May 18, 2013 3:07 pm

“I guarantee this easily outdoes the farce of a fight that is Pacquiao vs Rios which will be lucky to do 600k” Wanna bet? Millions of people will be watching this fight to see how Pacquiao does after his KO loss to Marquez. I bet the Pacquiao/Rios fight well-exceeds 1 million PPV.

I think if Floyd doesn’t fight Canelo, Showtime will exercise opt-out contract because they are going to lose more money if Floyd fight another opponent and not Canelo, and that is embarrassing for Floyd, he have to fight Canelo or he will expose that he is really a coward. Boxing fans had enough of cherry picking, give us the fight we want or we are not going to buy your fight.

Canelo’s negotiating clout just went up. this is the cost of Alvarez bolting from Floyd’s fight-card to headline his own. it’s no coincidence that Floyd has claimed May 5 and September 16 as his personal fight-nights. he can count on a prominent Chicano-Mexicano fighter with a paying fanbase to significantly bolster his numbers. Canelo (not Guerrero) was that prominent fighter for Mayweather’s recent May 5 fight-card. as a fight-fan i made sure to watch both. at this point, Canelo and Mayweather are the standards in their respective weight-classes and among the most impressive to watch.

Mayweather can not express himself to be the PPV man. That reason he has brought number because of his opponents. DLH, Hatton, Marquez, Mosley, Cotto, marketable names. He top 2.2 millions, because DLH. DLH charisma is undeniable. It was pass to Mayweather. Mayweather couldn’t sell himself until DLH accepted to fight him. DLH defeated Mayweather, there was always a shadow following DLH in the big fights. Mosley 1, 2, Trinidad, Mayweather. Except for Hopkins, Pacquiao. As Mayweather has questionable wins Castillo, DLH.

Posted May 18, 2013 1:14 pm

If Floyd doesn’t pull in the need PPV numbers he’s not making exciting enough fights and he’s not fighting the best opponents. It’s also proof that Floyd is NOT the only draw in his fights so he has to make fights with opponents who are also a big draw, like Migue Cotto, and Canelo, and opponents who are up to his caliber. And size (I’m talking about weight divisions here, not lightweights that pop up to welter to fight him or jr. middle’s that drop down to welter to fight him). You fools who claim that ONLY Floyd is the draw or that HE is the one who commands the PPVs are idiots. 30 years from now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be known more for being a master salesman, marketer, and showman than he will be as an ATG. At the present rate he is going, history will NEVER record him as the GOAT because he continues to not fight the greatest opponents available, even if he or GBP or anyone else tells you that he does. Showtime would not give Floyd a guaranteed 6-year $250,000 million contract if they didn’t expect his fights to meet certain numbers as well. Robert Guerrero. BFD. I told everyone from the beginning that Guerrero didn’t deserve the fight, that it was a given that Floyd would dominate him, and that there were better opponents that Floyd could have fought. All these factors also influence PPV numbers. Floyd will continue to do his best to fight safe fights for his five remaining bouts–if he does in fact fight five more fights by the time he’s 42-which I seriously doubt. Meanwhile, he wants Canelo to drop to 147. Oh, the challenge!
