Sanchez thinks Golovkin can face Mayweather or Cotto

Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, thinks that Golovkin should be in the running for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and/or Miguel Cotto. Golovkin has a fight next month on November 2nd against contender Curtis Stevens, but Sanchez figures that’ll be an easy fight for Golovkin.

Once Stevens is out of the way, Sanchez wants Golovkin to face Mayweather or Cotto. He believes that Golovkin can down to 154 to face either of them as long as he has a full 8 week training camp to trim down.

Sanchez said to RingTV “Gennedy came into camp weighing 167 before training, so it would be just a matter of getting enough time to get down to 154…we would start losing some of the weight that we have to earlier…it’s just a matter of having the time to do it.”

Of course losing just 6 pounds is nothing compared to the amount of weight fighters like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. have to take off for their fights. Golovkin can get down to 154 no sweat. The real test would be if he were asked to come down lower like at 147-152.

That would obviously take a lot out of him to get down to those weights, but it’s definitely a possibility if Cotto and Mayweather were interested in fighting him, which I kind of doubt. Cotto’s promoter Bob Arum already wants him to fight Sergio Martinez next year. Cotto also wants to fight Canelo.

In other words, if Cotto is going to take a risky opponent, then it’s going to be against a popular fighter with a big following. Golovkin is popular among hardcore boxing fans, but he certainly doesn’t have a huge following of casual boxing fans like Mayweather and Canelo do.

That’s why it’s likely that Cotto won’t agree to fight Golovkin, and the same way Mayweather. We already saw how Mayweather’s pay-per-view numbers were less than impressive when he fought Robert Guerrero. If Mayweather were to fight Golovkin, you could expect his PPV numbers to be even less.
