Hopkins landed one damaging blow, which is all that’s needed to exceed the damage of any Calzaghe punch or combo but in terms of raw action, Calzaghe slapped the smarts right out of Hopkins that night.

Posted March 12, 2013 11:39 am

Hopkins definitely lost to Calzaghe but it is not like it was a butt whoopin and Hopkins landed the more damaging blows. Calzaghe just out worked Hopkins.

Gus, we all know it would be a mistake for B-HOP to fight Ward and it is unlikely to happen.

I give Calzaghe his props for the Hopkins WIN. Whoever favored Hopkins must’ve mistakenly thought that SIZE was more important than SKILLS. Calzaghe was #2 P4P at the time and Hopkins was #5. The WINNER was EASY to predict.

Posted March 11, 2013 10:22 pm

Mental lapses, dont know. Motivation he has lacked that. His BEST performances came when he was considered an underdog. He even said himself he has to have people against him saying he can’t do it. Against Joe he was heavily favored.

Cloud was NOT damaged goods that’s a preposterous claim the kid is as strong as a truck he NEVER got knocked out in his career.. If anything Hopkins is damaged goods because he is damn near 50 and at that age ONLY Crocodiles or Galapagos Tortoises are considered in their prime…Cloud simply got outfoxed by the old man and thats about the size of it his physicality was very much intact…

Hopkins underestimating Calzaghe is no excuse for Hopkins nor does it diminish Calzaghe’s win. besides, Hopkins isn’t known for mental lapses. if anything, he’s outsmarted himself in close losses and wins. bottomline, it was a solid win by Calzaghe over an old(?), befuddled, and bedeviled B-Pops, Period. he simply couldn’t figure out or time Calzaghe’s unconventional ring-style and was outSmarted, outQuicked, and outFought for a convincing loss. conversely, B-Hops looked to be in fine mental and physical shape last Saturday. Cloud was simply out of his league.

Hopkins can’t take back his legitimate loss v. Calzaghe. even IF Calzaghe returned for a second match the window for a rematch closed years ago. i’m still incredulous at how easily Calzaghe bedeviled Hopkins after that early KD. after which Hopkins seemed every bit the old and faded ring-warrior unwisely prolonging a great career beyond his fighting prime. i’m now equally incredulous at how B-Hops is outSmarting Aaand outFighting prime comp today presumably waaayyy beyond his fighting prime(?!). whatever happens from this point forward, Hopkins is already a Boxing immortal.

mental strength and poise was evident but IMO it was B-Hop’s physical condition that impressed me most. this was a typically vintage Hopkins win during which he didn’t hesitate to exploit openings for the entire 12 rounds. have to hand it to B-Hops. at 48 he’s fighting as if in his prime.

Posted March 11, 2013 6:17 pm

That’s BS. I not gonna give him a rematch because he talked trash. That’s weak. He didn’t want to give him a rematch h because he knew Hopkins would be ready for his 1000 slap routine and wouldn’t take him lightly. Better to win a close SD than get have to deal with b hop again. Take your win and run.

Posted March 11, 2013 6:07 pm

Cloud was damaged goods due to the beating he had off Campillo. I also knew Hopkins would win despite this because Cloud isnt a world class puncher. Hes only stopped one chhallenger in his title reign. Regardless at 48 years old its an insspiring win for Hopkins

Posted March 11, 2013 5:55 pm

Cloud would be 99.9% of the 48 year old boxers at his weight are you crazy? he is a STRONG, active kid…. Fact is that Hopkins even with diminished athleticism is crafty enough to outwit you…Dawson, Pascal and Cloud are the BEST LHW’s in the world and Hops fought them all in his late 40’s besting 2 of them and losing to Dawson but NOT taking a beating… He is about 20X mentally stronger than Calzaghe who checked out at 36 and began a second career snorting blow… Hops took on the YOUNG Champs at 175 while Calzaghe chased guys out of their prime and Old men at 175, no ones fooled.

Congrats B-Hop!!! Anyone saying that the fight was boring (and yes, sometimes Hopkins is very boring), you might want to find a new sport or someting. Have you never seen a masterfull performance by a skillfull boxer before? They don’t all have to be Ward vs Gatti. Boxing fans should be able to appreciate the performance, it’s the casual fans who don’t know any better. Of course racism blinds…

The best part about the Calzaghe – Lacy fight was Lacy was being seriously over-hyped at that time. But Lacy did travel to take that fight and he did some how finish that fight, although ruined. I think the string of Calzaghe last fights helped his legacy, minus Jones, and to me the Kessler win was his biggest. Kessler was in his prime. But let’s be real, it does not compare to the B-Hop legacy, when you compare credible fighters, wins, and age. Calzaghe slapped B-Hop into submission, but he did not destroy an older version of him.

Posted March 11, 2013 1:09 pm

Calzaghe’s win over B-Hop has “some” relevance, but his win over Jones Jr has none. A prime Jones would have dismantled Calzaghe, in an embarrassing fashion. I did like Calzaghe, I don’t think even he, in an interview I saw, considered his fight with Jones defining but more as nostalgic to end his career. Who ever brought up Tszyu – Judah, thank you, that was a great memory. Judah has certainly defined the term overrated.

Posted March 11, 2013 12:56 pm

Hopkins defended the MW Championship 20 times he fought a PEAK Roy Jones Jr he fought Calzaghe, Winky Wright, undefeated Taylor 2x, Antonio Tarver, undefeated Pavlik and Pascal, Chad Dawson and Tavoris Cloud, Trinidad, first to stop ODH… Bernard fought BETTER fighters after the age of 40 years old than Calzaghe did in his entire career and the reality is that Joe is trying to sell the likes of Jeff Lacy or a decrepit Roy Jones as markers of greatness? C’mon I understand guys not liking Hopkins he is abrasive and a spoiler but Calzaghe had better be glad he got a more faded version of Bernard or he would have gotten rocked… Trinidad was killing everyone and he got BLOWN out by a 36 year old Hops…. This man is a legend thats why he is STILL around and relevant while guys are still hating… Joe was embarassed on that canvas!

Posted March 11, 2013 12:44 pm

Slopkins claim to fame was dodging all of the guys his true size in his Prime and then taking on two naturally smaller future Greats Tito Trinidad and Delahoya who had the balls to move up and take on the much larger, taller, stronger Future Light Heavyweight Hopkins… LOL, big fn deal.. He’s Boxings dirtiest fighter and has avoided all his true competition early on.. as we saw in this fight, they’re all ugly, sloppy hug fests.. Echols wobbled Slopkins log ago and Hopkins Body slammed him to survive.. Calzaghe the White Boy embarrassed Slopkins…

Posted March 11, 2013 12:39 pm

Well. He can hang his hat on that great split decision, it still warranted a rematch on his turf and he ran from it.

Posted March 11, 2013 12:29 pm

If only “ratings” were the end all and be all… Joe was much closer to his prime and his win was not even a win to many fight fans (I disagree).. Guys trying to promote Calzaghe as beating the hell out of Hopkins are delusional the Executioner was not even scratched and what did Calzaghe then do? he went after the picked over remains of Roy Jones Jr… Joe booked the names but alas he was not facing prime or close to prime versions of those fighters so deductions will be made ESPECIALLY when he did not even get a stoppage or at really beat Hops up….

Posted March 11, 2013 12:28 pm

I dont even think Hopkins took the fight seriously. Calzaghe surprised him with his slap rate.

Posted March 11, 2013 12:20 pm

IF you can beat the #5 rated Boxer in the World with slaps while he is punching then that makes it even MORE impressive.

Posted March 11, 2013 12:20 pm

Well if you think a split decision win where some has to throw windmilling slaps is impressive then I dont know. Me myself I. T

Posted March 11, 2013 12:18 pm

Calzaghe beat Hopkins when Hopkins was the #5 rated Boxer on the Planet. That IS impressive.

Posted March 11, 2013 12:15 pm

Roy Jones could not “understand Joe” because his brains has been scrambled by Antonio Tarver and Glenn Johnson… This is the reason that Calzaghe is viewed skeptically by some astute fans of the sport… Trying to pimp his name off of RJJ who was 40 or 41 and completely washed up is simply a joke… We will never know what Calzaghe would have looked at against a prime or even semi prime version of RJJ but my guess is he would have looked like Montell Griffin or Clinton Woods… The REAL Roy Jones was unbeatable for 10 years and 50 professional fights….

Posted March 11, 2013 12:07 pm

James, your emotional reaction to Hopkins very bigoted statement has blinded you to the HARD reality of boxing… Calzaghe does NOT own an impressive victory over Hopkins and comparing Kosta Tszyu knocking Judah senseless to Calzaghe getting put down and slapping his way to a crusty points win does not correlate… Strip out the politics Tszyu flattened Judah, whereas some don’t think Joe even deserved the win against Hopkins….

SREDMOND, well said regarding the B-HOP/JC topic.

Posted March 11, 2013 11:10 am

So why didnt Calzaghe take the rematch on his home turf. It was a split decision not a UD. Joe knows he didnt want to deal with a more prepared Hopkins again, even in his own backyard.

Posted March 11, 2013 10:49 am

If Calzaghe was supposed to be this otherworldly fighter then his performance against the OLD version of Bernard would have at least been superior to Roy Jones who beat Bernard when he was in his prime… Instead Joe struggled and spent the early part of the fight being drawn into Hopkins hands… The idea that Calzaghe ran away with the fight and left no doubt is debunked by the card he lost and the interest in a rematch.. It was an ugly fight and Hopkins was plain silly at times (as was Joe) but Calzaghe hardly left the impression that he could be Hops on any given Sunday…As amazing as his performances have been relative to his age Hops consistency dropped off ALOT after hitting 40 years old… He had 13 fights and his record is 8-4-1(NC)… This is in stark contrast to him defending 20 times in succession and not losing from 1993-2005….

Posted March 11, 2013 10:45 am

Locust, sorry man we just disagree on this point Bernard has had a more storied overall career than Joe Calzaghe in my opinion… Joe trying to hang his hat on the 43 year old version of Hopkins getting an S/D is just not really elevating him to the degree you want it to…Hopkins is NOT in his prime nor was he in his prime the night Calzaghe eked out a win… His craftiness allows him to defeat some of these younger guys in ugly fashion but if a 43 year old version who is not a KO puncher could put Calzaghe on the canvas then the 35 year old version knocks him out or schools him to another level… The ONLY guy absent a loss EARLY in his career that ever took Bernard to school and clearly showed who the better man was, was Roy Jones Jr when both were prime young boxers…. Calzaghe’s BEST victory was Mikkel Kessler NOT 43 year old Hopkins….

Posted March 11, 2013 10:33 am

Sredmond you saying Calzaghe will never be regarded as a better fighter WHat ? What are you smoking ? Last nite clearly showed it wasnt about age when Hopkins lost to Calzaghe. Superior boxing skills is what beat Hopkins that nite against Calzaghe. Bar none Cal is a better fighter hands down

Posted March 11, 2013 10:23 am

My excuse for Hopkins losing to Calzaghe? I never made an excuse for Bernard losing alot of people don’t event think he did (I thought Joe won) but the reality is that Joes win was NOT impressive, Calzaghe was billed as something extra and he was put on the canvas by Hops and had to slap his way to a tough win….Joe Calzaghe will NEVER be regarded as a “better fighter” than Hops Joes most noteworthy wins were over Old versions of Great fighters Jones, Hopkins… Bernard still ekes out wins by being a spoiler and his defensive prowess but the fighter who took it to Trinidad over 10 years ago left the building, he was faster, more busy ect.. Calzaghes name only comes up when Bhop fights or Andre Ward is dominating YOUNG fighters at 168… Joe is a HOF fighter no question but Hops is an ATG and legend there is a difference….

There is NO WAY to marginalize Hopkins unreal ability to still compete let alone get wins against these kids… He is CLEARLY the GREATEST Older age fighter in modern boxing history no one else is even close… The fact that he can dictate the pace and still be a ring general at the age of 48 has NO precedent, he and Mayweather should both teach a clinic on how to defend and neutralize your opponents…Hops is not exciting but if these young bucks cannot shut him down then what can you say?

Bernard is a true master of the game. Bernard doesn’t get caught like Floyd does regularly. Last time B-Hop was hurt was in 1994 against Segundo Mercado in Equador. Bernard applies boxing skills to perfection. His chin is not there to be hit. His footwork is second to none. Watching him having his way with these world-class fighters, having boxed myself, I’m amazed by everything he does inside of the ring.
There are many things missing in his game if you compare ten years ago. He doesn’t let his hands go nearly as much. He’s no longer the brute force of nature that schooled and kayoed an undefeated Glen Johnson or retired talented Joe Lipsey 17 years ago. Still he’s compensating these signs of old age by fighting even smarter and with less risk.
Amazing athlete that I can only compare to athletes like Roger Federer and Pelé that dominated their sports for long periods of time. No other contemporary fighters are at the same level as B-Hop in terms of accomplishments and overall skill, not even James Toney, Roy Jones Jr or Floyd Mayweather.

I lost all respect for McNabb when they went to the Super Bowl and there was 2 minutes left and the had to go some yards to score and he was just walking with no hussle and of course they lost the Super Bowl

Posted March 11, 2013 2:12 am

Secondly, Bernard Hopkins is the one who moved right next door to Vice president Joe Biden, who he goes out of his way to publicly pander too. thirdly, Mcnabb grew up in the south-side of Chicago. fourthly, doesn’t Bernard realize that Brockton M.A., is a suburb of Boston and hometown of Marvin Hagler and Rock Marciano? Is Bernard also so willfully ignorant that he forgot Sugar Ray Lenard was from a middle class suburb of Baltimore, or that Joe Calzaghe grew up in Newbridge, a suburb of New South Wales, or that Andre Ward grew up in Hayward California, which is a Suburb of Oakland, or that James Toney, who Hopkins also chronically avoided grew up near the posh Huron High school, which is located in the suburbs of Ann Arbor? ….and the list can go on and on.

I am not discrediting Calzaghes win against Hopkins, he did win but Calzaghe looked beat up while Hopkins looked fresh. And he could of fought Hopkins years before, he could of fought Jones years before, there are fights he could of fought he just never came to America. And he did fight fighters past there prime and he also had help in some fights from the ref. One fight that comes to mind is the Byron Mitchell fight. Where Mitchell knocked Calzaghe down and then Calzaghe got up and knocked Mitchell down and then Mitchell got up and then in the exchange the ref stepped in and stopped the fight which should of not been done. Now with that being said I thought Calzaghe was on his way to winning but the ref should of let the fight play out since Mitchell had the power to hurt Calzaghe and he was firing back. I like Calzaghe but I can punch holes in his resume just like you are trying to punch holes in Hopkins resume

What Hopkins did last night at the age of 48 is pretty impressive. You can break any fighters past opponents down and say oh he should of lost that fight, or he got a gift or that guy wasn’t what he was supposed to be. I can do the same with Calzaghe. The same Calzaghe that didn’t fight the best in the division until they all got old. The same Calzaghe that got knocked down in the first round by Hopkins. The same Calzaghe that didn’t want to give Hopkins a rematch in which the fight was close enough for a rematch because Hopkins did last the harder and cleaner blows its just Calzaghe out worked him but Calzaghe didn’t want to go through that again.

Cloud was already beaten easily by Campillo and Hops wanted to fight him as soon as he saw it. He is fooling you guys…..if Campillo did it so easy why is Hops so special?

Hopkins told Ward he would NEVER fight him for any amount of money. Why the lie here? I just listened again. He said NEVER. Hops never said that.

Supreme Court

At the end, B-Hop told Ward: “did you write it down? Go and watch the tape if you want….You are here to stay for a long time….i will never fight you”
Then they shook hand…

Hopkins take another one to school — THAT IS TRUE — the problem is that school is boring. Hopkins puts everyone to sleep. Great skills. Boring fight. Go away.

We all KNOW that Floyd is going to WIN vs. the #10 P4P Fighter in the World at 36 yrs old even though Roy Jones tried it at 35 and got knocked out!!!… that’s why Floyd is the GOAT. But Hopkins is the GOAT for Fighters over 35 yrs old. GREAT performance by the post 35 GOAT.

Hopkins is awesome! Mayweather should learn from this true legend and fight Sergio Martinez! We all know that he is going to beat Guerrero. Where is the intrigue? Yall wasting your money if you buy FM fight. Just watch it the following day.

Hopkins is amazing. Got one over on father time again.

SKILLS is more important than PRIME!!!

Posted March 10, 2013 2:57 pm

Someone please beat Hopkins already

What’s so “powerful and dangerous” about Cloud? He looked like an average journeyman contender. Moreover, while B-Hop and the Klitchko brothers deserve credit for staying in prime condition at their advanced age, there’s a side to it that hurts the sport. As they age, their styles become predictable and boring. I’m not a hater, but I’d like to see more young warriors get a chance to liven up the competition.

Just as I predicted!!! I am the GREATEST Fight Prophet ever born!!!

Posted March 10, 2013 1:43 pm

I don’t know how grandpa Hopkins does it,but…there he is!!;at age almost 50 he continues to amaze everyone, amazing!!

Big Al

Well, these are both fighters I don’t like very much, and the best scenario last night would have been a double-KO to rid us of both their careers and Don King to boot, but I’ll have to settle for 2 out of 3.

Good job B-Hop, anybody that can’t respect his game has alterior motives. If your not the champion of something then you should probably stfu. IJS.

Cloud is an overated do nothing, Campillo already boxed his ears off.. and was robbed..

Posted March 10, 2013 12:53 pm

Or we recognize a great boxing IQ. Yeah Hopkins has held and has dirty tricks but last night Cloud was the one holding and Hopkins took the man to school

Don Quixote

clinching and holding, holing and clinching, ala Bernard Hopkins; boring fight.
The worst part of it is that other “fighters”are learning these “tactics” and go to the bank. Most of you who think Hopkins is great just have the herd mentality…..

Bernard Hopkins vs. Andre Ward? Seriusly here, Hopkins is an ATG and future Hall of Famer. Ward is the Nr1 chmap in super middleweight ands still on his rising and Hopkins is to old to fight him! That fight would never make any sence. If Bernard Hopkins fights again, he should defend his world title against Roy Jones jr in a 3rd and final fight between them and then fight James Toney at cruiserweight o if not, then Hopkins have done far beyond expected and deserves more then ANY fighter in decades to retire. Go Hopkins!!!

Actually Cloud was the one doing most the holding. Hopkins was working on the inside

Hurray-hurray-hurray for the legend Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins!!! Hopkins is once again the world light heavyweigth champion and a 4-time world boxing champion as well (1 – middleweight, 3 – time light heavyweight). I can and same time can’t belive he made it, Hopkins once again became the oldest man in boxing history to become recognised world champion and in dominant style as well. I’m so glad. At age 48, he did it. Its so uniqe and how Hopkins can do it. No one can ever take this away from him. One of the 10 greatest boxers Pound for Pound of all times.

Cloud is another Jeff Lacey

Dave old shool

Hey Brandon he just beat an underfeted fighter for his World title and his 48 years old, i saw it as skill as so did alot of other people. What did you want him to go toe to toe? Thats not skillful at all to just go in bangin is it? He did what he was supposed to do and thats to get the win and what a win it was.

“Would you bet against it?”

Yes James. Yes I would.

Brandon St. Randy

Clutching, holding, wrestling, that’s not an art! Hopkins has bored us long enough please go away!

Posted March 10, 2013 9:11 am

The Prince

Hopkins is like an old Kung Fu Master that makes you look foolish if you dare question his mastery of the arts. The press and fans were questioning him, just like they did when he fought Kelly Pavlik. And once again, Hopkins gets the last laugh. Now we’ll see if Cloud can mentally recover, or if “The Executioner” claimed another warriors heart.
