HappyBoy, you’re right. Chavez jr and Canelo Alvarez have been handed titles without earning them. They build these guys up, pad their records and pick the right fight for them and somehow maneuver them into a title fight, in a city and venue that will bring in a lot of Mexican fans. Arum and GBP sure know how to bait the fans , and prey on their loyalty to their country’s fighters. Don King did it with Julio Cesar Chavez Senior. Bob Arum has been doing it since the beginning of time. Chavez jr learned his lesson with Martinez even though he had a moment in the final round. Canelo will take a beating sooner or later, and if he fights Mayweather, he will gat a boxing lesson. Canelo has talent but fighting guys that are smaller, older and much less talented will hinder him when he takes on the real fighters.

HAPPYBOY, when you read me touting Canelo or Chavez Jr. as “the greatest”, “P4Ps”, “elite”, or “unbeatable”, then you can compare me to biased fanboys who only support their own. otherwise, there’s nothing wrong with me calling out Haters opposed at even the mere mention of successful potential for these fighters. Marquez is another matter altogether. he Proved that he is greater than Pacquiao*. however, you still won’t read me declaring him to be the greatest of all time or even the greatest Mexican fighter of all time. don’t even bother assigning me the canned “biased Mexican” jacket. it simply doesn’t fit. especially when “Mexican” fighters dominate an entire year of Boxing with or without my support. the only connection is that i recognized their talent and potential while others (e.g. Public Enemy and Chicago Gal) consistently embarrassed themselves with bitter denial and outright bias aGainst “Mexican” fighters. you already appear to be leading that pack in 2013. “Congratulations”.

Floyd called Cotto, “The toughest fighter I’ve ever faced.” … Austin Trout didn’t think Cotto was very tough.. “I approached the fight like every other fight, not like any special fight. I knew I could land the jab and right hook, and whenever Cotto reached in I got him with left uppercuts and straight lefts. I think out-scored him every round. Now I want Canelo Alvarez.” … I thought, “Good like that Trout.”

I notice Trout didn’t call out Floyd like everybody else.. Trout knows Floyd will fight him when giraffs learn how to fly.

Posted January 11, 2013 7:44 pm

IF Canelo gets a Floyd fight.. HAHAHA good luck with that.. I have to see the fight signed to believe it.. Canelo has to do more than “look decent.” … Cotto looked decent in bloodying Floyd’s face up, and cracking an aging and inactive Floyd with more shots than any other fighter has. Floyd called Cotto, “The toughest fighter I’ve ever faced.” Which was true. Cotto was world champ at 140 but Canelo is a full fledged 154-pounder. Mosley put harder RPGs on Floyd than he laid on Canelo. The Kid took less punishment. Now, Shane was an old man for BOTH Floyd and Canelo. NOPE…The Cinnamon Kid has to do MORE than the aging Mosley and Cotto did against Floyd.. Young Saul has to rip Floyd. He has to get into those ribs. He has to smash that left hook off Floyd’s chin with a will and desire. He has to knock Floyd down. Then he has to blast Floyd TFO … Anything less just won’t do. Do upsets happen in Boxing? YES THEY DO!!!

Posted January 11, 2013 7:36 pm

Canleo is strong, YOUNG and poised but most importantly its the fight of a lifetime so if he books a loss it will be to an ATG fighter no harm no foul… Floyd has never stopped a fighter at 154 so odds are that Canelo will finish that said if he gets careless FMJ is the king of making you pay for mistakes…

Posted January 11, 2013 2:34 pm

Hidalgo, the version of Mosely that Canelo fought was KNOWN to be a stepping stone opponent he had not won a fight in YEARS so comparing the version Mayweather fought is not accurate… Sugar was still seen as a very solid fighter with a shot at beating Mayweather 3-1 underdog, whereas when he fought Pac it had fallen to 6-1, Mosley is one of the few fights I don’t give Pac much credit for even though I understand him making the money… Canelo fought a stepping stone fighter and nothing more Shane cannot pull the trigger. Post Pacquiao Shane admitted that he did not want to take the kind or risks that might have gotten him stopped…

Posted January 11, 2013 2:31 pm

“Canelo is going to face Floyd Mayweather in a fight that will really make him a star if he performs even decent.” I agree with you on this, SRedmond. Canelo looked just as good and did just as well against Mosley as Mayweather did. I think Canelo hit Mosley a lot more than Mayweather did. Hell, if Canelo wants the fight give it to him. Stop trashing him and give him a chance to prove himself. Too many people say he’s evading opponents he should be fighting, that he’s hype, and this and that, but when the kid calls out FMJ, the same people say he isn’t ready, doesn’t deserve it, etc. I think the kid is a ready as he is ever going to be. Give him the fight Floyd.

Te Tumbo, Canelos stepup moment is NOT far off and I see a scenario where amateurs are judging the number of fights he had starting at the age of 15 with him being a TRUE veteran… While other guys even the mighty Ward had long amateur backgrounds Canelo was fighting GROWN men of questionable quality similar to a young Barrera… Had he come out of the Olympics Canelo might have 20 fights by now and he would be ramping up like Broner or one of the other talents… Guys want to pretend he is an OLD man who has been ducking for years but the truth is he is being brought along and his moment to shine is 2013…

REDMOND, it’s obvious to me that several morons are bitterly opposed to success for “lab rats” like Canelo or Chavez Jr. no matter how promising their potential may be. while these fighters continue to earn their stripes in a boxing ring, i will continue to enjoy watching these bitter Haters simmering in their own piss.

one of these “lab rats” recently went 12 v. Martinez and had him cut, bloody, batterred, reeling, and on the verge of being KO’d in the final round. i’d like to know the lab that manufactures, bottles, and distributes fighting heart and courage? along with a sturdy and durable chin.

Alvarez is a terrific young talent..Is he due for his step up bout? Of course but AGAIN in fairness they tried to put him in with two of the toughest outs at 154 Paul Williams and Kirkland…Alvarez would KILL Angulo who has not been looking that great as of late, he was getting stung during his last bout… Austin Trout is going to be a tough night for ANYONE at 154 so who knows how that would play out… But all this is moot because just like he SHOULD Canelo is going to face Floyd Mayweather in a fight that will really make him a star if he performs even decent. Golden Boy would be doing this young fighter a disservice by not setting him up for the future… Reality is that Alvarez is YOUNG!!!! A Kid and he has his whole career to make his mark….

I believe Paul Williams did a live interview on the Martinez/Chavez card. He seemed to be in high spirits and looked good.

“he was already slated to face Pwill and Kirkland before circumstances prevented” Speaking of Pwill, I’d sure like to read an interview of him since his accident. See what’s up with him, how he’s doing, etc. Devastating turn of life for Paul. I always wish him the best.

I believe Canelo will fight Trout in May. Trout is a credible oponent. He is undefeated, young, strong and hungry. Canelo wants Mayweather? Really? They should give him Mayweather. Lets find out once and for all what Canelo is made of. To the people that compare the Vargas vs Trinidad fight to Canelo vs Mayweather, they are wrong. Fernando was a better amateur and he was a descent boxer. Canelo is an o.k. fighter at least till he beats somebody, but the kid is not stupid and inside the ring he keeps his cool and is not a hot headed emotional fighter like Vargas once was. Dont get me wrong, im a Fan of Nando but I feel his career could of lasted a couple of more years…

I wouldn’t mind seeing Mayweather/Alvarez. That’s a good fight that I would bet on May to win via dec. But, Mayweather isn’t a 154 pound fighter. He’s barely weighed in above 150. Because of that he doesn’t have to worry about fighting above 147 unless he wants to. If he chooses to fight at 147 than Guerrero is probably his best choice, he’s one of the best at that weight and he’s holding a title. The only other fight for him at 147 would be Bradley, but being that he fighting under top rank it’s not going to happen any time soon. So he should go take Guerrero’s title. It’ll be better than most are trying to say, it just that May will win, which rubs the haters the wrong way.

Great post Tark!

Posted January 10, 2013 8:05 pm

Right… If Mayweather wanted to take a big risk he would face Trout instead of no-risk Guerrero.. If Canelo’s people wanted to take a huge risk they would fight Sergio Martinez, Austin Trout, or Keith Thurman… But instead they will mull over no-risk opponents until they eventually settle on one.. Corny Bundrage may be their man when the dust settles.

Posted January 10, 2013 6:01 pm

Canelo is in line for a possible career high payday with Mayweather he would be a FOOL to put that in jeopardy with Floyd getting older and older every day an inching towards eventual retirement…He has his ENTIRE career to fight the rest of these clowns and he was already slated to face Pwill and Kirkland before circumstances prevented… Mayweather is financially the Golden Goose so why would Alvarez put that in jeopardy??

still not sure what “risk” you’re talking about because it’s certainly not to Canelo’s undefeated record. once again, if defeating Cotto is Trout’s claim-to-fame, Kirkland is more famous if not as ambitious. it’s Wolfe and Kirkland who declined Alvarez’s previous challenge not the other way around. of course, you already know that but as usual you suspend reality to support your own biases. also, if Martinez can make 154lbs, which he assured he could to face Pacquiao* or Mayweather, he should be able to do the same to steal Canelo’s thunder. if neither step up, i’m fine with Alvarez starting to mop-up the rest of the unremarkable 154lb pile but just like i previously posted that wins v. each other would not distinguish Lara or Vanes as “elites”, neither will YOU concede elite status to Canelo if he defeats Trout, i.e., Trout is not a priority for ANY elite fighter.

It’s business all right… Since we know they won’t risk a fight with Trout, it will be interesting to see who gets the call to face Canelo May 4th… It won’t be Kirkland or Martinez, I’ll tell you that.

Posted January 10, 2013 4:36 pm

te tumbo

TARK, you’re reyling on a combination of names, stats, and quotes NOT any hardcore evidence of Trout’s “elite” status. also, i didn’t wait for Trout’s win to declare Cotto NOTHING more than a glorified 154lb gatekeeper. in fact, apply the same formula of stats, names, and quotes to Cotto’s 154lb ring-resume and it’s impossible to avoid the same conclusion. winS v. Lara, Vanes, Angulo, Kirkland, or Molina would be more impressive to me. ultimately, i’m not only interested but looking forward to Alvarez eliminating his 154lb rivals becuse i don’t suspect for an instant that Canelo is ducking any of them but it’s only good business sense to face and defeat a bigger Name and FInally establish his own elite status. Martinez and Kirkland fit the bill. Trout Who?

Posted January 10, 2013 4:21 pm

Tumbo…., “Elevating Trout to Canelo status is simply ludicrous?” Beating Rigoberto Alvarz to win the WBA World Super Welterweight Championship, and then winning 5 World Championship Fights in a row, including beating Miguel Cotto—the man who Floyd Mayweather calls “The toughest opponent I ever fought”—and remaining undefeated through it all is a great accomplishment … It makes Trout the most logical opponent for the Cinnamon Kid on May 4th … You don’t really think it’s ludicrous, I’m sure. I understand the business sense in not wanting to risk a loss with a Floyd fight looming in September—but Trout-Alvarez is one of the most logical and fascinating fights possible for the Floyd-Guerrero undercard. I am absolutely positive you would watch it with great interest, screaming all the way for your buddy Canelo. … I know I would watch it.

TARK, the most logical opponent for Canelo is Kirkland or Martinez. if he prevails, he can then mop-up the rest of his division or make the ambitious move up to 160lbs. the most logical opponents for Trout are Lara, Molina, Martirosyan, or Angulo. elevating Trout to Canelo or Mayweather(?!) status is simply ludicrous. i’ve gotta ask: where do you get your nerve? Btw, i don’t want to see Mayweather an ounce above 147lbs ever again. his ATG talent and skills enable him to outclass bigger opponents including Alvarez but it’s not the division he is destined to dominate. that is 147lbs where a still-prime Mayweather remains unbeatable. Pacquiao* was never more than a hype-fueled “threat” and even a bulked-up Marquez can’t touch him. Guerrero’s earned the shot but he will invariably be outclassed if not outfought by the #1 P4P Mayweather. nonetheless, because of his fiercely competitive spirit and his 147lb dominance, i can’t fault “Money” for craving the challenge and profits to be found above 147lbs.

according to this account, it appears that promoters are once again inhibiting a fighter’s desire to fight he best. i can’t recall the likes of Pacquiao* ever twisting the arms of their promoter to fight their primary rival(s). Canelo is living up to the gold-standard of boxing integrity established by the likes of Marquez, Mares, and Guerrero, which is that the only way to silence the critics and Haters and confirm your greatness, is to face and defeat the Best. Btw, defeating a glorified 154lb gatekeeper like Cotto doesn’t entitle Trout to sit on his ass and demand big paydays. at most, Trout is tested but NOT proven. that would require wins over at least ONE credible 154lb contender of which there are several. Wtf is he waiting for? the challenges (if not the paydays) are all around him. all he needs to do is Step-Up one step at a time and make himself UnAvoidable. just like Marquez, Mares, and Guerrero.

“fighting once a year means you have ring rust as a boxer so fighting once a year ” No, it doesn’t Happyboy. What it means is that Floyd gets to sit around and have long rests–especially after a four-round farce like Mayweather/Ortiz. Long layoffs, as long as they aren’t too lengthy are can be beneficial: less wear and tear, less stress, more time to heal if necessary, more time to study the next opponent, etc. Now, as FMJ ages, the long layoffs will take their toll on him. But yeah, I think fighting only once a year definitely works to FMJs advantage. As for your “moron” comment, LMAO! I love you too!

Mayweather weighed about 150 fight night when he faced ODH who was in the 160’s when FMJ took him down… Floyd has ONLY had 2 fights above 147 NEVER weighing the limit when he fought these guys…There are NO excuses for Ricky Hatton he wanted to fight the BEST, he brought alot of economic cache and spirit to the contest but he was outclassed and knocked out…Because Floyds in ANOTHER stratosphere from him

Posted January 10, 2013 11:52 am

Beating Hatton was a very good win for Mayweather… Hatton was an undefeated Champion who was a single division under Mayweather who himself had come up from 130 earlier in his career…Mayweather schooled him and knocked him out pretending Floyd is a SRL type WW who was natural to the weight and began there is a JOKE, hence him having titles from 130 to 154.

Props to Canelo for trying to step out of the protective custody he’s been placed on by GBoy. Wether or not Mayweather has the last word, it seems clear that the biggest hold up for the fight is Golden Boy not yet willing to put in their main pup against Floyd (or anybody dangerous, for that matter). Canelo is showing he dares to be great and to achieve that he wants to fight the best.

Guererro has come out of obscurity…Who has he beaten other than an unfocused (ever since the Hati diaster) Berto? Berto has not been the same fighter. Aside from that who has Guererro fought worth any salt? Yes…BOYCOTT FRAUDS MAYWEATHER’S PPV EVENTS!!!

Fight Aficionado

It should be Alvarez vs Mayweather in May. We all know it’ll be Guerrero who gets the call.

Yeah great at idea! Boycot his PPV events until he caves in and fights Alvarez. Then when he finally fights him you lot can say “Alvarez was not ready for him”, Floyd Cheery picked blah blah blah rinse and repeat.
