Wow John I was almost at tears listening to this. Great story about the experience you had with Manny and an awesome insight of you. I really appreciate the way you represent us former fighters and fighters today. We need to have some kind of shirt with a title of you and the late great Emanuel Stewart. R.I.P. to one of the all time best trainers.

Fabulous article Geoffrey. Really touched my heart. Seems like there’s always another chapter to read in the book of Emanuel Steward. It’s been a very good book.

When Scully talks about 8 kids in a beat up car, and all sharing one room and one meal, to the point where each boxer had one small piece of meat and a spoonful of mashed potatoes.. I remember that too.. It goes to the point of funding, and funding drives, and the financial support from the community, professional athletes, business people, and various level of government. That’s what happens when you have to stretch it super thin.

Businessmen like Michael King are starting to make a big difference for America in the Heavyweight Division, by funding Dominic Breazeale and other heavyweights, and providing them with huge, beautiful, fully decked out modern training facilities like you’d normally only see in Europe.

A good fighter has no fear, the majority of Emmanuel fighters had a killer instinct. Not all figures carry that. Hearns was one of them. Hagler, Leonard, Duran, and Hearns carried the signature. Emmanuel was one of kind trainer trust worthy to end. Rest in peace, humble trainer that made a lot matadors in the ring.
