“Pound-for-pound”, Nonito Donaire fights at 122 lbs. And is is a great boxer. But he still needs to meet higher caliber opponents IMO. Nishioka might have been ranked #1 but he wasn’t and lauding Donaire for a performance he didn’t give in his last fight doesn’t make Donaire any better or Nishioka any worse. Nishioka was scared of Donaire from the word “Go.” When a fighter is that scared of his opponent, all the skills or rankings in the world won’t make him any better or any greater than he really is. Fear is the determining factor. Nishioka was petrified.

“…hence him being a Top 4 or 5 P4P fighter” Forget the “P4P” BS. You probably own an iPhone and ride a Harley too–just because everyone else you know does. Plain fact is that Nonito has been kicking ass in every division he’s fought in. There’s absolutely no need to bring in mythical “P4P” ratings in order to justify this boxer’s greatness. It’s not necessary or even qualified to rate him across other divisions–doesn’t prove a damn thing. If P4P mythology never existed, Nonito would still be a great boxer. But seeing as how he’ll definitely never fight anyone from middleweight on up, using “P4P” rationale to qualify your arguments is just bunk.

I agree with jon, ringarough should try and get a fight with darchinian if he beats him than I think that will bring him a fight with donair for sure but somehow I think he wont get past darchinian , darchinina is better than him in my view!

Posted October 20, 2012 6:42 am

Sredmond- about usain bolt haters can say anything they want , the second best in 100 and 200 meter run is not even close to him and I don’t think anyone will ever come close to his amazing times… Donair will fight ringarough if he becomes more popular and stays undefited!

Posted October 20, 2012 5:41 am

No more excuses donaire. You wanted the Japanese fighter now you should want to fight the Cuban . Make it happen!

Posted October 20, 2012 2:59 am

Rigo dont need tune up fights to slap NO NO NONITO AROUND, no no is mayweather all over again, runner, next will be that rigo is taking steroids

Posted October 20, 2012 2:19 am

Nonito says he’s going to stay at 122 for a while and clean it out… That’s good news for Rigo–means this fight might be made in a year or two. I hope so because Rigondeaux is too old to be dvision jumping once Donaire moves to featherweight. ND said, “This is my 4th weight class. I have to build up my size and strength before I jump up again. I’ll be here for a while.”

Posted October 19, 2012 11:19 pm

Let’s Be honest..

No brainer… No argument

Rigo need to fight someone like Vic, Arce, Vasquez, Montiel …. etc

If he can fight 1 or 2 of them and beat them, then we can have argument…

RIGO WHo????

All he fights were bumsssss…

Posted October 19, 2012 9:13 pm

Big Al

so he doesn’t choose who he fights, but he decides who he won’t fight. c’mon, man. you’re not the best until to take on the best. I wish donaire felt that way about all his opponents.

Donaire first 11 fights;5 guys with losing rec,2 more guys debuting, lost to guy 2-1.Had the cuban lost to a guy 2-1 all hell would break loose, overall 10-1 rec. Rigo first 11;In 3rd fight fought guy with 70 fights 59-11,7th fight fought former champ Cardoba 37-2,8th fight won interim title in Casey hometown in 1rd,9th fight KO’d undefeated champ Ramos to claim his 1st title,9th fight defended belt vs only top guy who wanted a shot at the belt & knocked him down 5x.Again he just picked apart a young solid prospect in Robert Marroquin(who beat broner & russel jr 2x).Let me guess Mathebula/narvaes are better have huge fan bases & Marroquin is a bum lol.People will criticize Rigo for getting caught by 5’9 10lb bigger/younger Marroquin but they’ll fail to mention he never went down once & knocked the kid Robert for the first time in his career twice. He also beat broner, russel jr but Marroquin is still a bum right?Nonito is a good fighter Rigo just gives him a run for his money & then some.

TARK – Anyone can look GREAT when they’re fighting guys who aren’t even in the TOP 10 of his division. Let’s see him beat the guys Donaire has made look FOOLISH and then maybe he can “talk”. Until then. He’s not worth the time. Not to mention NO ONE knows how he is..

Posted October 19, 2012 7:09 pm

TARK – What happened when Rigo stepped up and fought Cordoba? Oh yeah, he was dropped with a jab. Who has he beaten in top 10 of his division (122lbs)? Cotto lost TWICE to Abdullaev in the amateurs but he outboxed him in the PROS, Cotto also lost to Kelson Pinto the amateurs but he DESTROYED him in the PROS. How many Olympic medalists (or qualifiers) have been beaten by Olympic rejects?? DOZENS! His Olympic accomplishments don’t mean NOTHING! He needs to prove himself in the PROS….and to claim a he’s being “ducked” by a TOP 5 P4P fighter is LAUGHABLE!

Posted October 19, 2012 7:07 pm

The way I look at this… Guillermo Rigondeaux is a special case. He’s a Super Bantamweight World Champion in his own right. He’s won several gold medals and nobody’s beaten him in his last 200 fights—amateur and pro. He’s a ridiculously skilled boxer, so if Donaire beats him it’s another HUGE accolade for Nonito. Normally you’d say a guy needs 20 pro fights before he can challenge someone with the Donaire’s prestige and top P4P ranking. But after Rigondeaux’s performances vs Marroquin and Ramos, that unwritten rule evaporates … After all, Leon Spinks challenged Ali after 7 pro fights—and Marvis Frazier challenged Larry Holmes after 10 pro fights. Rigondeaux is 10 times as skilled as those chumps—and of course people will expect one Hell of a lot more from him in the way of performance so it’ll be a much bigger fight … I don’t know about some fans, but I would love to see it.

Posted October 19, 2012 4:30 pm

Rigo does not have to be called a bum but he is ALSO not deserving of massive respect.. You want Donaire to CONTINUE to prove he is a cut above despite the years in the sport and the many training camps he has endured… BUT you want us to hand over the sceptre to Rigo because of his “feel good” story and Olympic accomplishments? Andre Ward was HIGHLY touted yet he was also given grief early on and had to prove how damn talented he was…It began with Miranda, Kessler, Froch, Dawson, Abraham and now we have fighter that is WELL respected with under 30 bouts…. Rigo needs to earn REAL respect and he cannot demand the attention of one of the BEST fighters in the sport over the past few years based on how good he fights with headgear and Olympic rules…

Posted October 19, 2012 4:16 pm

Donaire is a joke, by becoming a multi-division Champion and P4P fighter by the time he was 28 years old… Some of you guys know so little about boxing you should not even be allowed to post… If Donaire is a joke what does that make the guys he surpassed on his way up the scales? I guess boxing is replete with jokes…. Sheesh

Posted October 19, 2012 4:12 pm

Correction,”90% of his haters would be his “fans” how ironic.”

Posted October 19, 2012 3:52 pm

Not saying every Olympian Is suppose to make it big or a guarantee it’s obviously not.Or that rigo is the best thing ever.Just saying rigo deserves some respect Leonard, meldrick,Ali,whitaker, foreman,Oscar to name a few all won gold & turned out great(Floyd, jones got robbed). The cuban gets criticized a lot & if he was reppin red/white/blue 90% of his haters would be his how ironic.Rigo is not your ordinary amateur or pro fighter nothing has been ever handed to him. He’s always had to take his by dominating or winning very convincingly in order to get a fair decision.Rigo from a poor little island that’s produced 34x gold medals so it’s no coincidence he won 2.But forget amateurs the guy being foreign or his boring style whatever that’s supposes to mean is enough for people to call the decorated Olympian a bum.How sad cause if he’s a bum what does that make any of you??

Posted October 19, 2012 3:49 pm

If Donaire can beat Rigo so easily, don’t why don’t he fight Rigo now? I’m sure his fans would like to say I told you so. This is a fight the fans want but neither Donaire or his promoter want because Rigo is more experienced than they would have you believe. I bet Donaire will wait until Rigo is as old as Nishioka to fight him. Rigo has experience – two gold medals and he comes from Cuba. You can’t pad your pro record when you’re in Cuba.

Posted October 19, 2012 3:41 pm

Donaire is a joke. He makes the stupidest excuses, revising them as he goes along. Now he’s using the my promoter excuse. Sounds a lot like his countryman PEDcquiao.

Posted October 19, 2012 3:35 pm

Donaire is not competing with he is FAVORED over pretty much anyone he gets in the ring with hence him being a Top 4 or 5 P4P fighter…. A guy with 11 fights being put on the shoulders of novice fight observers and promoted as being able to compete with anyone is nonsense…. I like Canelo and think that he is going to be a terrific for years to come but I am not giving him the nod over Cotto or Mayweather at this point he still has a way to go…. A guy with 11 bouts in an unknown quantity… Broner and Gary Russell look amazing but against the next tier I gotta hold my breath….11 fights?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Posted October 19, 2012 3:09 pm

One of the best fighters Rigo has faced was Cordoba…a fight in which Rigo was hit with a JAB that led to the very fight knockdown of his career….Nonito is WORLDS better than Cordoba, and Nonito will not only test that chin AGAIN, he’ll shatter that thing into pieces.

Posted October 19, 2012 2:51 pm

TheFacts – TheFact is Rigo is UNPROVEN in the pros….it’s that simple really. He can’t keep pointing to his AMATEUR career as if it were Gods gift to boxing. This ain’t the ams pal, this is PROFESSIONAL boxing. Beat a TOP NOTCH pro and then he can talk to a TOP NOTCH P4P figher.

Posted October 19, 2012 2:45 pm

SREDMOND – You sir, took the words right out of my mouth. I’ve been saying the EXACT same thing the day Rigo claimed he was being “ducked” by Donaire…that’s laughable. Rigo should fight someone in the top 10 of his division before he claims he’s being “ducked” by someone in the TOP 5 P4P. The guy is riding his amateur career as if it held immense value in the pros…guess what, it DOES NOT! How many times have we seen Olympic medalists get beaten by Olympic rejects? I can’t even count. Rigo needs to prove himself in the PROS. Period!

Posted October 19, 2012 2:43 pm

Two tools trying to twist peoples words, okay.I clearly stated Rigo the cuban would compete with anybody 122-126lb could say the same for nonito.Didn’t say Rigo would beat everybody plain & simple.Insecure butt hurt nonito fans want to jump on one little thing someone says lol,the jokes on you squares.

Posted October 19, 2012 2:42 pm

This cannot be taken seriously a guy with 11 fights simply cannot command serious attention from a guy who is a top 5 P4P fighter and has reeled off something like 29 straight wins….Boxing his always trying to figure out who is gonna knockoff the top dog…. Being too good is often punished… Donaire is not fighting Tomato Cans, but guys suddenly are giving a kid with 11 pro bouts more status than a proven professional…. There are better fights for Donaire than this guy and should he destroy him, people will say he is “Green” at the professional level…

Posted October 19, 2012 12:41 pm

Someone tell me, who has Rigo beaten?? Give me ONE (just one) elite fighter he’s beaten in the PROS that gives you the impression that Donaire (a P4P fighter) is ducking him? Rigo is NO world beater…the guy hasn’t beaten ANYONE!!! He’s still an amateur who’s merely competing in the pros and is claiming that one of the BEST fighters in the world P4P, is ducking him. He’s using his mouth to get himself a fight he does NOT deserve. Work your way up Rigo, enough talk, fight someone on the ELITE level, beat them, then you can “talk”.

Posted October 19, 2012 11:47 am

jack dempsey…. You’re full of crap. I never said Hagler and Holyfield are “average” fighters. They were great fighters, obviously. Not being the ATGreatest in your weight class doesn’t equal average you air brained nincompoop.

Chicago guy

Rigon d joke need to fight either Moreno or Mares and if he passed or come victorious Nonito/Rigon d joke sounds more sense.

Posted October 19, 2012 9:32 am

I think Donaire is ducking Rigo if anything. Rigo is 32 and has a lot of experience, despite having 11 pro fights. If hes not ready now, then he never will be. Rigo is a champion, Donaire is a champion. Both at Super Bantamweight. The fight should happen, but wont. Mares, Rigo, and Donaire should all be looking into fighting each other, but Mares seems like hes the only guy who seeks out the tough challenges.

Posted October 19, 2012 9:18 am

i don’t see donaire losing for a long time, his fight with gamboa is going to be his only official chess match these other guys aint messing with the flash in my humble opinion/i guarentee you mares fans are going to be surprised in his next fight as well because he’s about to take an L….eazy!

Stay at 122. If Donaire progresses his career like he discusses in this article then that is all the fans could ever ask for. Rigo was a champ after 7 fights but he is still developing but too many fights get talked to death in boxing and never happen so fans cant be blamed for wanting the fight now. There is always the danger of the fight falling apart at the negiotation table once the egos swell. Need I name names? Mares or Rigo would be good right now.

Posted October 19, 2012 6:49 am

Donaire’s making the right choice if he sticks around at super bant for another 18 months, he’s still got natural advantages at that weight with some big names to tag. By the time he hits featherweight he could be nearer #1 p4p if he succeeds in nailing rigo, mares and moreno (give or take darchinyan/agbeko). That’ll mean bigger rewards once he’s taking bigger risks vs the likes of gamboa etc

Posted October 19, 2012 6:20 am

The Cuban’s name will be abruptly altered from Rigo to Rigor Mortise when Donaire hits him with a left when they fight. I can hardly wait to see this fight .

Posted October 19, 2012 5:58 am

You idiots who say that he’s duckin really needs to finish reading the whole article. Donaire says if he can clean up the division in the meantime before moving up he’d like to face rigo mares and moreno. And I do remember a few of the haters mentioning nishioka as one of the names that nonito was supposedly duckin before that fight was signed. Rigo is damn good, but I honestly don’t think he can deal with donaires pop.

Posted October 19, 2012 5:48 am

Donaire is scared of Rigondeaux, thats why he keeps ducking him, plain and simple

Posted October 19, 2012 4:52 am

Joseph Herron

Lol…Plain and simple, huh Poli?

C’mon, man…it’s hard not to like Nonito and his crew.

Look, every great trainer always insists that it’s a fighter’s athletic gifts that separates the good fighters from the great fighters.

There are very few fighters that can compete with the natural athleticism of Nonito Donaire. Abner Mares and Anselmo Moreno are very good fighters, but they wouldn’t be able to match the natural talent of Nonito.

The only fighter in the division who has any chance of competing with the natural gifts that Nonito possesses is Rigondeaux.

That’s it…and until Rigo can defend himself against that left hook, he would get knocked out.

Sorry, fight fans…plain and simple!! lol

Posted October 19, 2012 4:03 am

Herron…. It’s like a prosecutor telling a jury that a sketchy case is “open and shut” and “It shouldn’t take you long to come back with a guilty verdict.” …. People like to hear facts and evidence. They don’t like being told what to think or being lectured that their decision should be plain, simple, and promptly forthcoming.

Posted October 19, 2012 3:05 am

Rigondeaux has no chin, plain and simple.

Posted October 19, 2012 3:03 am

Rigondeaux is a great amateurn but I guarantee he cant take a massive punch in thr pro’s, he was badly wobbled in his last fight when he fights Donaire it will be goodnight Vienna.

Posted October 19, 2012 3:00 am

Joseph Herron

I think it’s really funny how a lot of posters on the comment boards will end their passionate statement with the words “plain and simple”.

When everyone who’s followed the sport for a significant amount of time knows that nothing in boxing is ever “plain and simple”.

lol…I’ve just always found that amusing.

Posted October 19, 2012 2:46 am

Who would he fight at 126? For some reason I doubt he would fight Mikey Garcia or Orlando Salido.

Posted October 19, 2012 1:47 am

Donaire is ducking, plain and simple. He doesn’t even mention Mares he’s not as high and mighty as he thinks. Rigo and Mares both would give him all he could handle. Anybody would look like “the truth” fighting these guys that Donaire has fought Nishioka was decent but he was 36 not many fighters are able to perform at an elite level by the time their mid 30s come around. Vazquez is the only legit opponent he’s had lately and any real fan knew Vazquez would be tough for him. We need more guys like Sergio Martinez and Andre Ward who fight the best, real fighters not business men and actors like Donaire and a majority of big name fighters.

Posted October 19, 2012 1:41 am

Donaire is is full of crap! Stop giving excuses about why you won’t fight Rigondeaux. Rigo will kick his ass plain and simple. Donaire is an ordinary fighter that has plenty of holes in his game. Sooner or later he’s going to be dominated, and those that will dominate him are Rigondeaux, Mares, Moreno, Mikey Garcia and a few thers. Donaire should also never be mentioned in the same sentence as the true GREAT Filipino fighter of the century, Manny Pacquiao. Donaire should continue to fight the has beens he’s fought and stay away from the top dogs if he knows what’s good for him. Donaire is a conceded, egotistical person. I met him once, and he was an ass. Stuck up, and wouldn’t give me or others the time of day. Don’t let his fake conning smile fool you. he has the nerve to say I want Rigondeaux at his best? Translation, “keep that guy away from me because I know he can kick my ass”.

Posted October 18, 2012 11:50 pm

TheRussianTyson-Now I can agree with that.I cosign. You know Rigondeaux has a very deceptive style He`s very stealthy and shifty and skillfully lures his opponents into making careless mistakes so that they can run into the super-impressive punching power that lurks in his left hand like the rugged Marroquin experienced when he was knocked down for the first time by Rigondeaux in their matchup.

Thanks for bringing that up brother, I’m putting it out next week to promote his fight in El Paso on October 27th.

It’s a Top Rank event and I’d like to give the young fighter some push before the Top Rank brass take another look at him…timing is everything when launching an article.

But thanks for asking, Tark!!

Posted October 18, 2012 11:03 pm

Herron… You interviewed Adam Lopez. When is the interview going to be published? Or where is it? I haven’t seen it.

Posted October 18, 2012 11:00 pm

The Russian Tyson

Rigondeaux is not Nishioka. The Cuban will present a very different puzzle for the Filipino to try and solve.Against the limited Nishioka , Donaire can use his physical power and speed to eventually get to and overwhelm the limited Japanese fighter.Against Rigondeaux he will have to fight with his head as well as his physical ability. Rigondeaux is going to outsmart, outthink and outbox Donaire.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:59 pm

Donaire says…, “When you hit something with a great amount of pressure, your hand is going to split open. Either your bones are going to break or the surrounding tissue is going to be damaged.”

This is not inevitable for anyone and is simply the product of weak hands and weak bones. The trick is to eat a lot of raw green salads with green beans, broccoli, green leaf lettice, spinach, watercress etc. You can add cherry tomatoes, shallots, cheddar, almond flakes, whatever—but the main items are the raw green vegetables. Have slow cooked lean beef with your salads. It has to be from grass fed range running cattle, buffalo, or wild game meat. Corn fed beef won’t strengthen your bones. It has to be slow cooked like a roast or crock pot cooking.

Then hand exercises. Squeezing rubber balls or hand strengthening devices, or working hand against hand like spider pushups and other hand strengthening exercises you can invent and do while you’re watching TV.

Brittle hands will dog you forever if you don’t attack the problem with a lot of energy and determination. Of course, masterful hand wrapping is also a key.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:58 pm

Really, you are already talking about moving up so what difference does it make if he is at his best. Seems to me like he don’t want to fight him. Just coming up with excuses

Fighters better be at their best when they fight Ringo…..

Posted October 18, 2012 10:53 pm

Donaire is no Mayweether or Paciquao. Not worthy to carry the throne.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:41 pm

Firstly, people need to stop comparing Donaire to Pacquiao. They’re both of Filippino heritage… other than that, they’re two separate entities.

I don’t mind Donaire avoiding Rigo for now, so long as he fights the winner of Mares-Moreno next.
Having said that, I don’t know when Rigo will be “ready” in Donaire’s (and many fans’) opinions. Rigo looks like he’s going to suffer from Golovkin-fever… he’s very dangerous but isn’t worth much in terms of money, so nobody with clout is willing to fight him.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:39 pm

If donaire chooses to stay then fight Rigo go to 126 then fight Gamboa. fight the division best instead of just passing by.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:34 pm

Donaire is the BEST within his weight range (20 lbs UP and DOWN) Enough SAID.

Posted October 18, 2012 10:25 pm

In translation “I don’t want to fight Rigondeaux” “I want to fight less talented fighters”

““I don’t choose who I fight. I leave the decision making to my manager Cameron Dunkin. When I request to fight a certain fighter, it doesn’t always work out that way. I just fight whoever Cameron puts in front of me in the ring.”

At least Nonito’s honest. Bob Arum would say, “Manny makes the final decision.” Yeah, right.

Posted October 18, 2012 9:55 pm

Donaire is a great fighter, but he just doesnt have the excitement that Pacquiao did when Manny was moving up in weight ..may be its the competition Manny had Barrera,,Morales,,Marquez etc. all legends..Donaire fought guys name Nishioka,,Montiel,,Vasquez,,hardly legends,,Pacquiao can sellout a place and score record numbers in P.P.V ,,Donaire cant carry a P.P.V show by himself..this is not to insult Donaire ..its just that he does not excite like Pacquiao…..

Posted October 18, 2012 9:38 pm

To all of Donaire haters – just keep hating and gnashing your teeth. You were and maybe still are Pac haters so you proibably have lost a few teeth with all the unrequited hopes that both Nonito and Pac both fail in their attempts to be where both of them are today. Losers!!

Posted October 18, 2012 9:27 pm

theres really not many other guys in 122 if not Rigo then the only other option is Mares, If he thinks Rigo isnt seasoned enough then he will be waiting a while because the guy only has 11 fights, he might as well move up..
