Richard Schaefer resigns as Golden Boy Promotions CEO
Lem Satterfield
June 2, 2014
Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, has announced that he is leaving the Los Angeles-based company that he helped start 10 years ago, according to a press release sent out on Monday.

“After more than 10 years with Golden Boy, it is time to move on to the next chapter of my career. This decision has required a great deal of personal reflection, but ultimately, I concluded that I have no choice but to leave,” read the release.

“I have succeeded in banking, and I have succeeded in boxing, and I look forward to the next opportunity. I am proud to remain a shareholder, so I have a strong interest in the continued success of the company. I am proud of what we have accomplished at Golden Boy, but I now look forward to new challenges.”

Schaefer said he could not add any more to his comments, citing the advice of his attornies.

“The statement says it all,” Schaefer told “I’m going to be evaluating my options. It was just time to move on.”

Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza declined comment.

The announcement, which was first posted on the website, did not state if Schaefer plans to continue to work as a promoter in the boxing business.

i could care less if somebody calls me brother, dude, guy, man, chum, buddy, friend, jack, bud, doc, baby, partner, fella, judge, coach, chief, boss, slim, or prez.

there’s a lot of other things they could call me which could send them to the ER

Jim.., Yes, I trained professionals too.

But I enjoyed working with fresh talent off the street more. Guys with no bad habits. Give them very strong basics and get them off to a winning start. Watch their parents erupt with joy and amazement, and hugging each other. That always got me.

Pros are hard headed and not as malleable. It’s serious and hard work

Funny, TJ…I have always called everyone “brother” since I was a kid and more than likely always will.

It’s a reflex…I’m proud to say that I consider many ESB posters genuine friends of mine. I never chastise anyone on this forum and have no reason to…even if they attempt to “throw daggers” at me in debate.

Passion runs rampant through this comment board and it often gets the better of people…I don’t hold any grudges and enjoy seeing all of the back and forth banter.

my personal friends on the ESB forum know they are.

Posted June 1, 2014 8:53 pm

“sharing all of this with my extended family on ESB is always very meaningful to me”

You know how you call everyone “brother”, Joseph.

Well, have you noticed that no one calls you “brother” in return?

Have you ever wondered why that might be?

Posted June 1, 2014 8:28 pm

In other words, you haven’t trained a single professional boxer, much less ever had any success in the ring yourself; yet you think you’re in a position to judge that Roy Jones Jr “had terrible fundamentals”; that Froch can’t box and lacks “basic fundamentals”; that Calzaghe was “a technical disaster”; and that Kessler and Groves are “horrendous”.

In other words, you’re a complete tit.

80,000: “herron was awesome here. seemed to really be having a good time.”

Thanks, 80 Grand!! I was having a great time…sharing all of this with my extended family on ESB is always very meaningful to me.

I make very candid comments. I might couch them if I devulged that. You’re anonymous, so am I. Only a few people here aren’t. That’s their business.

Just name the most successful five or ten!

Posted June 1, 2014 6:27 pm

@ Candy.., I started guys out as subnovices, who never pulled a glove on before, who have been pros for several years and are unbeaten. My intention was never for guys to become pros, but to box for the love of the sweet science.

However, the pro game is what fans are aware of. You get your name there.

I was referring to Froch and Groves’ technical skills when I talked about their boxing ability. Andre Ward schooled Froch because he’s a much better boxer. Froch was able to stop Groves twice, and beat Kessler because, although he’s years older than those two 168-pounders, he’s a better boxer than either one.

Froch’s technique may be as bad as Groves claims it is –but at least he can defend himself well and Groves cannot. Groves gets hit with everything. Inside shots, outside shots, head shots, body shots, there’s no scoring area on Groves that’s difficult to reach. As a defender he’s worse than Amir Khan.

So if you think that’s a good boxer, that’s your point of view.

Gonzo, mephisto, Turbo H@mster, Mongrelenko, Anonymous, DMX, It’s Me, Ernie…..are only a several out of the dozens of monikers this sad loser uses on a daily basis…….hes like a cyber terrorist who specializes in attacking the best commenters on ESB like Joseph Herron and TARK……

then when hes having his delusions of grandeur claims to be the #1 best poster in history of the internet…..this boy is a very sick chap with no social life and needs to be locked up in a padded room with a straight jacket……calling him funny only encourages this mentally deranged troll to flood this site with pure rubbish……

ESB was once one of the most respectable boxing forums in the world until this relentless troll ruined it like just another toilet at his institution for the the criminally insane…….as a Brit is makes me very ashamed to see one of my countrymen sabotaging the once great ESB…….its very sad really……

But thanks for your support, guys!! Look for the improvements in the next videos.

Please don’t dodge my question.

You have stated below that Froch, Groves and Kessler do not know how to box (“Neither man can box” was your first comment, and then you say that Kessler is “even worse” than Froch et al.).

So please, tell, who are some of the hundreds of boxers you have trained? Just name the most successful five or ten.

Joe you are doing a good service to boxing and it’s fans. Do not let some hecklers detracting find any home in your mind.

Your interviews are awesome dude. It’s great you have access to these guy’s. Sometimes there are questions I would love to ask. actually all the time. Your interviews are fine and u have really stayed on point. your helping to represent the views if fans rather than networks and thats PRICELESS and INVALUABLE.

Posted June 1, 2014 4:52 am

what have you ever achieved, in or or out of the ring, “TARK”?

Posted June 1, 2014 4:21 am

Candy.., I trained hundreds of boxers, but I was only commenting on lack of technical skills, not their fighting ability.

Froch is a great fighter… Groves not so much… Some people who type with 2 fingers can do 50 words a minute, doesn’t mean they’re doing it right. That’s the way they do it.

Some fighters have so much heart and experience they do things the wrong way better than a lot of other guys do them the right way.. It takes a Tarver to expose a Jones.. It takes a Ward to expose a Froch or Kessler.. And yeah.. Ward would have exposed Calzaghe too.

How many wins did Yory Boy Campas have in a row??? Was he a good boxer??? Trinidad went 40-0 before he ran into Bernard Hopkins—who had good skills in his day.. Groves got away with his limited game until he ran into Froch.. Carl is no genius, but he knew how to beat GG by observing his flaws.. He found the seam.

LOL…it’s still a work in progress. I always welcome honest criticism, as long as it’s honest. But my guess is, judging by your initial comment about my “radio face”, that you’re just being a d!ck.

But if it really detracts from the content, then that’s a problem. Please be honest…thanks, brother.

Vasyl Lomachenko is either a genus or an imbecile. He’s coming off of a loss to a guy who I would favor Russell to beat. However, Lomachenco would probably favor Russell’s style over overweight Salido’s mugging style.

LOL…thanks for the feedback, TB…this wasn’t an interview but an analysis video with fellow boxing scribe and friend Rodney Green.

The episodes of “Boxing 411″ are fight preview videos…did you bother listening to my analysis and prediction in the video, or couldn’t you get past the gum chewing? LOL

Thanks for watching the video man…be sure and check out the next two episodes which will come out next week…Cotto/Martinez, and a special Lara/Canelo preview

Posted May 31, 2014 9:07 pm

Hidalgo.., Froch taught himself how to box, basically.. He invented his own style.. He’s a great fighter — that makes up for not having great fundamentals.

Roy Jones pointed out many of the flaws in Froch’s technique in the first 4 rounds.. Maybe you weren’t listiening.. It would matter if he were fight Ward, who is a great boxer … but he was fighting Groves, who’s not at all.

ugly Froch has a pretty

Posted May 31, 2014 6:52 pm

Neither man can box… When Roy Jones, who had terrible fundamentals, critiques Froch’s lack of a left hook, lack of a defense, and lack of basic fundamentals like footwork, you know Froch has problems. Calzaghe was a technical disaster, but he was a good absorber too. Only guys worse are Kessler and Groves. They’re horrendous.

Groves is an even worse boxer than Froch. Groves was winning rounds but Froch wasn’t concerned about rounds. Carl knew he was going to get big shots to finish GG.

If you can hit, it doesn’t matter if your opponent has never been knocked out… If he can’t defend himself you’re going to get several chances to hurt him in a 12 round fight.. Either flatten him when you get the opportunity — or keep after him and finish him off by a referee imposed stoppage.

Groves was very lucky this fight was stopped… Who knows if a fighter manages to lurch to his feet by 10, and he’s been complaining about quick stoppages??? Well… a British referee might have been stupid enough to let the fight go on… especially if he hated this loud mouthed little twit.

Karl would be a much better fighter if he defended a better. The way he leaves himself open through out the fight is laughable. He’s got a lot of heart, and a heck of chin though.
