if the ref stopped the fight with szpilka ahead on points,it would have been debated ,however Jennings was visibly ahead from his knockdowns of szpilka. The first part of the fight wads fairly even, then Jennings skills took over.jennings defense was superb, and his offense was quite skilled as well. Now Jennings needs to fight a proven contender.

A nice win for Jennings. He is too small to trouble a Klitschko but he won’t have to. Vitali is already gone and Wlad won’t be with us much longer either.Bryant needs to stay busy and stay at 225 and simply be patient. He has the skills to be very successful if he doesn’t rush it.He is not yet ready for the top guys.

To me, Jennings beats Pulev and Fury… Now that Vitali is out of the picture I rank only Wladimir and Haye beating Jennings.

Bryant is fast… he’s skilled… he’s tough… he’s strong… he’s conditioned to go a hard 12… What he lacks right now are experience and higher level fights, but he’s dominated everyone that he faced so far.

Kubrat Pulev has been very inactive and looked rusty, fat, and slow in his Tony Thompson fight… Tyson Fury has been inactive, and has had problems in the past staying in tip-top condition.

Jennings has decent skill. Probably in the top 5 in the world. It’s just that number 1 and number 2 are a clear cut above the rest. Jennings would need more head movement to beat Vlad. It would be very difficult for him to get around that jab. His 84″ reach could make a difference if he can get through. The other boxers have been so small that when they get in with their feet, Vlad can hold. He will have to come after him at angles and not take too many punches to land his own. What most opponents of Vlad do is follow him around, accepting his jab and hoping he will get tired of landing it. Never works.

This was a good fight for Jennings. An undefeated puncher.

He’s getting the right fights. Ward has proven you DON’T need big KO power to be successful in Boxing. You need exceptional boxing skills and Jennings in a dedicated student of the science. He’s also a very conscientious student of strength training and cardio training.

He’s the most disciplined heavyweight in the world, other than Wladimir.

He jennings needs to fight someone inside the top 12 or so as determined by ring magazine.

“This was a good win for Jennings, but Szpilka was knocked down in both fights with Mike Mollo, a journeyman. Jennings wants to fight, stays in shape and can box. His power is improving.” – Yes Szpilka went life and death with Mollo but he won and was an undefeated fellow contender until Saturday. I do agree his power is improving. His low KO% makes people think he doesn’t have punching power but it’s misleading. A lot of those bouts happened when he was still pretty green. He’s hitting with more leverage now.

Jennings lacks size and power to deal with wlad. His 84inch reach will help against most tall fighters but at 6’2 with a boxer style he will struggle with good heavies 6″6 and over.

Posted January 28, 2014 12:03 am

Tony1244

Eric, just looked up Byrd had a reach of 74” and Jennings has a reach of 84”. Byrd is 6 foot even and Jennings is 6’2”. Don’t know if that would make a difference against Wlad but it’s something to chew on.

If klitschko handled byrd, chamber’s and Brock, I see nothing in Bryant s game that trumps those 3 fighters to lead me to belive Bryant wins.
Maybe if Bryant continues to improve while klitschko declines, in the future Bryant can pull it off.

Bryant is without question the best America heavyweight and think he improves each outing.

The polish opponent only hit Bryant on the gloves and arms 70% of the time, not a way to wear your opponent down, Bryant s gaurd was very effective, solid fighter but klitschko beats him easy.
Bryant is no better than byrd, brock and chambers.

This was a good win for Jennings, but Szpilka was knocked down in both fights with Mike Mollo, a journeyman. Jennings wants to fight, stays in shape and can box. His power is improving. I’d like to see him in with any of the top 20 guys. Mansur, Chisora, even the Kingpin would be step-ups for Jennings. All tough fights, but Jennings has a chance with any of them. Not ready, yet, for the very top.

Posted January 27, 2014 8:31 am

BLUESMAN

Jennings needs to fight someone like Chris Arreola next, NOT Seth Mitchell. Arreola isn’t the best heavyweight out there but he’s very durable, hits hard, throws good combinations and has good stamina. It’d be a good test for Mitchell and a great CROSSROADS fight!

Posted January 27, 2014 4:07 am

Torgo

Jennings appeared impressive but the thought has crossed my mind that people may be overrating his skills because of this fight. Dig this; the fight was fairly close until the middle rounds then Jennings started to walk away with it handily, so maybe Jennings really won this bout via superior conditioning. For whatever reason, either good ol’ fashioned hard work in the gym and self discipline in the dining room or maybe PEDs. Szpilka simply faded down the stretch while Jennings remained strong.

jennings and seth mitchell that fight will be easy money for jennings what he going to gain off beating seth mitchell at this point now that going backwards now him and amir mansour will be a good fight alot of good fights can be be made at heavyweight if everybody fight each other

Posted January 27, 2014 2:39 am

The Prince

Jennings is definitely a talented fighter in the HW division. He’s not an out-of-shape taxi cab driver as they said back in Joe Louis’ day. But he doesn’t have the size to deal with the Klit brothers. But since both brothers are close to retirement anyway, he might be next in line to the HW throne.

Szpilka should have heeded his corner’s advice and kept his guard up. He was doing okay–even though he was losing–going into the 10th. It’s his own damn fault he got TKOd.

I can’t get to hyped up with Jennings beating Szpilka. Szpilka is a B, maybe even a C level fighter. Jennings needs a couple of top 20 fighters under his belt before we can give an accurate and fair rating. How about Jennings and Amir Mansour ? Jennings and Seth Mitchell ?

I don’t know, not taking anything from steve, but Jennings a true heavyweight and if Cunningham can hurt him as bad as he did I don’t see Fury getting up if Jennings drops him , even with mediocre power.

Please don’t gain weight Jennings. Finally have a heavyweight other than the champion who is in shape an people are calling for him to gain weight? Stay in shape and continue to improve. Jennings has the best combination of skill and athletic ability of the prospects. There will be an eventual clash between Jennings and Wilder. Jennings is by far the most skilled, but Wilder is big and has a punchers chance and could end it with a lucky shot.

Posted January 26, 2014 8:43 pm

“Jennings is a natural. He should not try to gain weight or become something he’s not.” – Agree with Paddy. At 225 Jennings is an average sized heavyweight but he’s ripped and in great shape. Add 10 lbs of muscle and it’ll slow him down and won’t necessarily give him any more punching power. He’s doing fine and has that 0 despite seeking out the best comp available.

Wladimir Klitschko would hardly be afraid of Bryant Jennings. Wlad probably beats him any time in the near future if they meet. Wlad is in his 38th year now though,. Age will probably defeat Wlad before any of the current contenders will. Jennings might be one of those men who contend the WBC belt though, for instance, sometime in the next year or so. Jennings can definitely be in the shake-up for big fights.

Jennings looked good, definitely not ready for Wladimir he should get some redemption for his hometown friend SS Cunningham, and shut up Fury, it will give him some experience with a taller fighter with an ok jab,( not that I think Fury is in Klitchkos leleague but thats why it should be made first.

Posted January 26, 2014 4:49 pm

Jennings looked very relaxed, and he paced himself well, gradually breaking down Szpika with solid body shots. The problem for Bryant now will be the inevitable over-hype, picturing him as the long awaited American world champion. They’re already pressuring him to face Vlad, but it’s way too early.

Good to see the contenders all matching up these days.

As people are saying, it’s very hard to pick against Wlad.
Pulev can pull a very good jab and get out style fight and that could potentially be the key to winning a (devastatingly boring) Wlad match-up.
Other than Pulev, any other shorter fighter I can think of is either going to chase and eat jabs, or get clinched for 12 rounds (refs really have to start penalizing clinching far more heavily).
Taller fighters on the other hand are in for a nasty time as they force the best out of Wlad. Instead of the boring, hugger style we usually see, Wlad reverts more to the offensive monster that he should always be. The dude can throw punches and combinations with the speed and coordination of a light-heavy and the power of a super-heavy. I’ve honestly never seen another fighter of his size with that much athletic ability. That’s why I don’t give hittable guys like a Fury a chance in hell (and probably not even a chance to get through the first round or two)… though I’d like for someone to prove me wrong and make things interesting at the HW championship level again.

the last time I picked against a Klitschko was Wladimir v. Peter and it almost unfolded as i expected. instead, he rose from the canvas and he was reborn Wladimir the heavyweight champion in his own right. the final missing piece to his heavyweight profile. he’s been unbeatable ever since.

Posted January 26, 2014 2:08 pm

te tumbo

meanwhile, i would love to watch the hooligan Szpilka square-up v. the likes of Arreola, Fury, or Chisora. there’s still some mileage left on his engine and it might as well be aired-out in a couple of all-out brawls.

Posted January 26, 2014 2:02 pm

te tumbo

Fantastic win for Jennings. if he’s got time and room to get a bit bigger and better, i would love for him to become the heir-apparent to the two-headed Klitschko’s reign at heavyweight. Jennings is just the right size to make matchups v. any remaining heavies viable and competitive IN Jenning’s favor. it’s premature but Jennings looks and feels like what the light at the end of the heavyweight tunnel is supposed to look and feel like.

Posted January 26, 2014 1:59 pm

Stefano

I’m Polish but I hate Szpilka. He’s just a bully with a big mouth and no boxing skills. As soon as he gets hit a fighting spirit gets drained out of him.

I like Jennings on the other hard. He’s a hard working man and shows potential, I hope he can get far. His smaller size shouldn’t be an issue since after both Klitchko brothers are gone there won’t be big heavyweights who equally skilled (and virtually unbeatable) like them.

Jennings hasn’t fought anybody yet! Wait til he fights a Bermaine Stiverne or Arreolla or Kubrat Pulev, somebody with real skills! Spilka is a joke! Wide open to hit, no power, he was cherry picked! How about a real fight? Derick Chisora? Tyson Fury? Robert Helanis? Even Wilder would be fun to watch! I don’t see Jennings ever being a threat to Wlad! He will stop him early! Jennings just doesn’t really have enough power to compete in the upper levels. He will be out gunned.

Posted January 26, 2014 10:15 am

Love-the-Sport

Good fight — although this is still Tier 2 or Tier 3 competition for Bryant Jennings.

I think Jennings weighs 225.

Management might consider slowly increasing the weight for Jennings and getting him up 230 then 235 then 240 and work his way up.

Jennings appears to already have good speed, good athleticism. I would like to see more power against elite competition.

Jennings is not that tall (6’2″) so he needs the weight. If Jennings can take on 2 more relatively easy fights and build up to 235 or 240 pounds — then I think Jennings has a chance against the more elite fighters and maybe we can see great matchups against Stiverne, Chisora, Adamak, Povetkin, Arreola. I don’t think Jennings has the height to fight Klitschkos. But if he can add weight and power he can do some damage.

Jennings looked pretty good last night. As for Szpika, I saw his rematch fight with Mollo and was not impressed. Seems as though Szpika cannot throw a decent jab, only paw with it.

As for Jennings, he fights smart and relaxed, his conditioning seems excellent. If he can keep active and keep improving he could make some noise.

Rofl Szpilka is terrible. Jennings just beat a fighter who had two life and death battles with frigging Mie Mollo. Mollo is a walking punch bag. He hadn’t even fought in like 2 years the first time they fought but he still nearly knocked Spzilka out. Rofl. Spzilka had also been dropped by complete bums before too. Jennings is ok but don’t be hyping him up for beating the likes of the glass jawed Spsilka.

@Chibs Fury was floored by Steve and Jennings should avoid him? Is it the same fury that’s fighting Szpilka ‘s leftover? You can’t be serious my friend. A fight between Fury and Jenning should be a final elimination for who gets to fight the WBC Champion who I suspect Will be Beware.

Jennings should avoid Fury, he is too big for ByBy, stronger and hits harder, I think he would invite him into his dirty style and then ko like Cunningham.

The key to victory was jenning’s ability to make Szpilka work every minute of each round. Jenning’s conditioning is world Class. Szpilka has nothing to be ashamed of, initially I saw it as a toss-up fight but Szpilka lack of defence and especially conditioning was his undoing. Jenning should get Fury after the Chisora and that’s if Fury wins which is not a given as Chisora looks more focused thesedays.
