Thanks for the memories, Corrie! A very deserving fan favorite, who added a big jolt of adrenaline to the fighting scene. His win over Wlad was one of the most shocking KOs. I’m trying to think of a leftie with more power and I’m getting nowhere…

I remember after he laid Wlad low and RJJ had routed Ruiz, there was talk of the Sniper vs. Superman unification. Matter of fact, it was waiting around for months for Roy to decide that cost Corrie the WBO strap. Then Roy went back down and faced Tarver. Boy would Roy’s chin have taken a pounding if he’d opted to face Sanders after all.

Lennox Lewis, Oliver McCall and Corrie Sanders. Lennox Lewis became a top 10 ATG, but all three have something in common. All three was opponents few wanted to fight against in a time line lets say from the 90’s to about 2005. Then fighters wanted to fight them when they got old (Well Lewis rightfully retired in 2004 at age 39 when the prime usally has ended for a fighter). Rest In Peace Corrie Sanders, you where a tough, dangerous opponent who had many, many fans respect, especally your war fights against Hasim Rahman, Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali.

what sense is there in shooting people? just to what? to get some money? the tragic irony is that a man called “the sniper” eventually got shot by real gunmen… very sad news… corrie was a really exciting puncher, his win over vlad is one of the most impressive destructions in heavyweight division in recent times…

VITALIY KLICHKO SAID “THE HARDEST PUNCHER I EVER FOUGHT IS CORRIE SANDERS. HE PUNCHES LIKE HORSE”. Corrie Sanders certainly the best southpaw KTFO artist ever. How he is a legend and the part of great boxing history.

Posted September 24, 2012 2:23 am

Sanders wasn’t anything like Tua.. He wasn’t a hooker. He didn’t beat you down by attrition.. “Sniper” was a good nickname because he sniped away at you…mostly with straight lefts.. He was very quick making adjustments with his feet and he could throw long range bombs one after another.. He had a unique style.. He ran out of gas if he didn’t get you going because he was usually poorly trained and conditioned.. He took a lot of incoming as well because he wasn’t a skilled boxer.. But when he was on his game—Wladimir K is really his only world level win and he was ready to rumble—he was very formidable. He clocked guys who had never been stopped before.

Posted September 24, 2012 2:20 am

It’s hard to describe his punch. It’s like saying “Imagine Tua’s punch but 6 inches taller”

I’m on boxrec now and apart Wladimir Klitschko, Corrie Sanders also knockout guys like Michael Sprott, Alfred Cole, Jorge Valdes, Bobby Czyz, Carlos De Leon, Bert Cooper, and Johnny Du Plooy, but The Sniper and François Botha have never fought each other

Posted September 23, 2012 11:02 pm

Not a great boxer—but one of the greatest attackers of all time… Corrie was relentless, and Lennox Lewis recognized his talent.. Before Sanders, a 20-1 underdog, fought 41-1 Wladimir Klitschko, Lewis called Sanders and said, “Corrie, you’re going to knock him out early. He can’t clinch so he’s a sitting duck for your attacking style. Just attack him like a raging tiger, stay on him, and knock him TFO ASAP. I can’t wait because I know you’re going to flatten him.”

Posted September 23, 2012 9:37 pm

Many fighters avoided getting in the ring with him, he was that dangerous. In his prime and in shape todays fighters outside klitschkos could not beat him. Vitily punished him but he was very tough for even vitily in the first half of that one. Hes also the reason vlad is so underappreciated right now. Todays vlad could have taken him, but that one victory gave him some well deserved recognition. Do not doubt that many ducked him because this guy was dangerous.

I wouldn’t say it was the lack of dedication to working out. He was plagued with back problems that sometimes limited his ability to properly train and prepare for a fight.

Tumbo IMO his technique wasn’t all that bad. You gotta have decent technique to generate the kind of punching power Sanders had. His problem was his training and dedication. Half the time you didn’t know if he’d show up in shape to go the full scheduled distance. If he’d have been more dedicated and trained harder he’d probably have held a belt for awhile.

Horrible news to hear about Sanders. That type of robbery is very unusual. They rob a bunch of people in a restaurant and kill one with dozens of potential witnesses. I hope the SA cops nail these scumbags who aren’t worth a pair of old socks used by Sanders.

Posted September 23, 2012 1:40 pm

Cornelius sanders was awesme and I’m glad the video mentions all the first round knockouts. I always brought that up when discussing how badass sanders was. He had very fast hands and I would say great technique for his unique southpaw style. He could flurry fast powerful and and many punches. He was the only guy to beat wlad decisively but wlad was not anywhere near peak. Wlad was stiff and cumbersome. Not like he is now. Sanders surprised vitaly even. Sanders should’ve rematched rahman, I think he could’ve beat him

I know there’s a lot of Klitschko haters on this site who’ve degraded Corrie to try and bash the Klitschkos, but make no mistake about it on his day Sanders was an extremely dangerous proposition for any heavyweight that has ever stepped foot into the ring. His combination of blazing hand speed and thunderous punching power is a very rare one indeed and he could take out almost anyone when he was firing on all cylinders, which sadly due to bad luck; lacking adequate sparring, being too dangerous for his own good, bouts of inactivity, and being blighted by injuries throughout his career, wasn’t often enough. Athletically he was very gifted and he excelled in a number of sports during his youth. I don’t remember the exact time but I know he clocked a ridiculously fast PB in the 100 meter sprints in his younger days too. When it comes to natural gifts, I think he was unquestionably one, if not the, most gifted of all of the super sized heavyweights I’ve ever seen. He beat his fellow countryman Botha 3 or 4 times in the amateurs, and IIRC, twice via stoppage, one of which was meant to be of the brutal lifted him of his feet and put him to sleep variety and he certainly had the potential to achieve more than he did in his pro career too. I remember watching him blast out tough journeyman Levi Billups out of there effortlessly in a sigle round, a few fights before that Billups had given Lennox Lewis a very tough ten rounder. He did the same to the teak-tough Al Cole too, Cole had fought plenty of big hitters and no one blew him out like Corrie did. Sanders did the same to Jorge Vales too, dismissing him in a round with consummate ease, whereas it took a prime Shannon Briggs 10 rounds to dispose of Valdes. I actually predicted that Sanders was going to beat Wlad because I knew how dangerous he was and that Wlad had been dropped by much lesser punchers who didn’t have anywhere near the hand speed or power that Corrie possessed than. I’m not a gambling man but I nearly bit my hand of when I found out what the odds some bookmakers were given on Corrie off pulling the upset.

Posted September 23, 2012 12:23 pm

TOTALLY AGREE with you Gonzo!

Posted September 23, 2012 12:18 pm

WTF??? Corrie Sanders? Vernon Forrest? So many more boxers murdered by cowardly b*st*rds who probably knew exactly what they were doing and who they were shooting…
I’ve no idea what we can do to protect our boxers but jealousy, amongst other factors plays a role in this.

Were they not content with robbing folk attending a family ceremony? No! They had to murder and cause maximum grief to all.

IMHO I pray these murders rot in Hell for eternity, but before that they are beaten to within an inch of their lives everyday in jail to remind them of what they have done!!!!

I remember Corrie’s performance vs Wladimir like it was yesterday… Yes, his mix of speed and southpaw power was awesome to see as he crashed hooks off of Wlad’s jaw….

It was akin to the old Wild West where Corrie was the quicker of the sharp shooters drawing his weapons with such speed that I doubt if Wlad even saw the blows that crashed off of his jaw!

But, it is the bout vs Hasim The Rock Rahman that will always live in my mind as one of the best shoot outs I’ve seen in recent years in a Heavyweight ring where both athletes were intent on victory and took turns in rocking and dropping each other…. I’ll have to dig out the VHS and watch it again…..

If only modern day Heavyweights could fight like they did at the turn of the last century!!!!

One of the best bouts you’ll see….. Totally awesome!!!!

R.I.P. Corrie Sanders! You were taken from us too early!

Massive loss indeed. SA is dangerous, but not much more than the great US of A, which is a ciminal heaven with everybody having possibility owning a shotgun. Even Lennox Lewis admitted he ducked Sanders – in fact Lewis never fought a southpaw in his entire pro career, let alone a blazing fast and powerful Sniper Sanders. Wlad and Lewis were similar in styles plus both suspect chins and looking how Sanders shocked Wlad I reckon the same would had happened to Lewis, he was smart to duck Sanders back then. Sanders almost got Vitaly as well in 2nd round, but Vitaly’s awkward style troubled him too much. RIP mr. Sanders, indeed he’s among the most underrated and avoided HWs ever. Certainly he was a top 10, if not inside the top 5 HWs of his era when he came in shape and motivated.

Sanders was much better than an “average fringe contender.” People underrated him because of his inactivity and lack of promotional backing. The superficial percpetion of many fans is that Sanders’s lack of a high profile (in the pre-Vlad years) was evidence of limited ability. But the reality is that boxing’s difficult business side relegated Sanders to a lower spot in the ratings, leading up to 2003, than he deserved. Truth be told, it’s shocking that Universum even brought Sanders to Hamburg in 2003 as an opponent for Vlad. Universum should have known that Sanders was dangerous and capable of fighting on par with almost any of the leading contenders. Rarely has a heavyweight been as widely and consistently underrated as was Sanders.

Posted September 23, 2012 9:37 am

Harbor Light

Not many people realize that, for many years leading up to the Klitschko fights, Sanders was already one of the ten best heavyweights in the world. During those years, Sanders didn’t actually have an alphabet rating because he lacked major promotional backing. This lack of promotional backing explains Sanders relative inactivity during those years as well. But the fact remains: in terms of talent and ability, Sanders was always one of the ten best. The guy was definitely underrated; he had height, reach, speed, power, long range tactical ability, and explosiveness. He could move well on his feet, boxing and jabbing when necessary. Or, Sanders could move in to blow guys away quickly, depending on circumstances. His southpaw stance and lightning quick reflexes were big assets as well. The only real downside to Sanders is that he was not always in condition.

Dreadful news-Corrie was a true world class HW who burst the Klitshko bubble at the tail end of his career. RIP. Crime is SA is now at all time high- no law and order place to avoid

RIP , Corrie . One of the hardest
southpaws in the business . Only a true idiot would call him ” average ” .

Rest in peace and sincere condolences to the family of a man who just went about his business professionally and kept himself to himself. Terrible news.

This country, South Africa, well and truly disgusts me. One of our only boxing heroes senselessly murdered. Screw this place and its natives, I won’t be living here much longer

Life is so fragile…with all of the dangers associated with the sport of boxing, one forgets how dangerous everyday life can be when you least expect it. This is a tragic occurrence and random act of violence. When foolish people incite violent, harmful acts, they don’t consider the ripple effects of their actions. This is a real shame. Corrie was one of the toughest men in boxing during the 90s. Unfortunately, he was largely avoided because of his size, speed, power, and southpaw stance.

Corrie was a beast when he was active…even when he wasn’t active, Corrie always had the great neutralizer: his hard left hand.

This is a sad day in boxing!!

RIP. I liked Sanders. He was an average fringe-contender for years until he got his shot at Wladimir and hit the jack-pot. Powerful and sharp punch with great hand-speed ….. his stamina was always a weakness but he was one dangerous puncher. Seemed a nice guy as well. RIP I will remember him well.
