Walter Johnson

The difference on the fight was Nacho Brintine he was Mares first trainer and he knew Mares weakness he went in there and took Gonzales for granted and the old veteran took advantage of his mistakes . Mares is always known to brawl when the fight gets tough but this time his right hand was below his chin and got caught right in the button .

I think gonzalez lucked out. I doubt he will keep his belt beyond his next defense. Mares was ko’d but he is still the better boxer/fighter overall which is why jhonny looked spectacular.

What a heck of a win and stoppage. Gonzalez was the man saturday night.

“I gotta say that dude knocked the piss outta Mares and I don’t think anyone saw it coming. ”

Most didn’t Dionysus. Mares was favored to win pretty much across the board. But I don’t think anybody really expected Gonzalez to demolish him. In one round! Mares TKOd de Leon, and de Leon beat Gonzalez by TD. Who would’ve expected Mares to be overwhelmed so quickly and thoroughly? Beristain, has got a wide grin on his face right now. His top boxers are turning out to be demolition artists. Um, Nacho? Could I have Hereida’s cell phone number please? LMAO! Just kidding!

Bwahahahaha@Tark’s comment! I gotta say that dude knocked the piss outta Mares and I don’t think anyone saw it coming. Good for the old banger! God bless that ol vet. Keep throwing ’em hands!

Fight Aficionado

Props to Gonzalez for his spectacular win. This guy’s a veteran who’s had ups and downs but keeps grinding. He sure manhandled Mares.

Public Enemy

Everyone gets caught sooner or later.. Abner appears to be a good kid and will have his up and downs like all of these guys..

Forget WW and MW division…. featherweight is where the good fights will be. So much diversity in styles in that division.

Edd – So, if you’re rocked and wobbled you should fight back and NOT hold? That’s stupid! the point of the fight is TO WIN, when you’re in trouble…what does EVERYONE say? “tie him up”, that’s why Floyd won, he was smart…Mares, not so much! You don’t fight back when you’re seriously hurt, you tie up, get your head back together and you FIGHT back. You’re a fool

MAYWEATHER 86, the beauty of the featherweight scene that Gonzalez just scrambled is that where ever they go, they won’t be able to avoid bumping into each other. it’s a crowded and talent-laden division where even second-stringers like Ponce, Salido, or even Lopez(?!) can’t be counted out. after all, before last Saturday, that was the company Gonzalez was sharing in the rankings. i think it’ll eventually boil-down to Garcia and Rigondeaux but as Gonzalez just demonstrated, don’t count the B-list out. just count them as long as they keep coming back for more.

“Mares wasn’t in my personal Top 10 P4P based on SKILLS for a reason!!!! His Defense is too POOR. I SAID that Donaire would knock him out with EASE and I was CORRECT.”

“Referee Jose Garcia adminstered the ten count.” Who? LMAO!

Posted August 25, 2013 11:36 pm

The only disappointing aspect for me ..Is the fight didnt go long enough , though that is the nature of boxing …Congratulations Jhonny ……

So, mares got exposed? One trick pony? Least he didn’t hold on for dear life like floyd did when he fought against shane.

this was Gonzalez’s final chance to win big and he delivered. he’s paid his dues with losses as tough if not shocking as his victory over Mares. although, in the context of the individual bouts he was winning his losses v. Vasquez and Penalosa were “shocking” to a degree. winning handily and losing suddenly. anyway, his win over Mares makes the featherweight scene more volatile in terms of potentially explosive matchups between the likes of Donaire, Mares, Garcia, Rigondeaux, Gonzalez, and an opportunity for still-willing veterans like Ponce and Salido to re-insinuate themselves into the mix. Mares is a class-act and his post-bout comment “I didn’t enter boxing to remain undefeated. I entered boxing to fight the best” says it all about his ring-warrior spirit. if the toughest losses are reserved for the best fighters, then this couldn’t have happened to a worthier champion.

I don’t think Fonaire would knock him out with ease.

Proud African

It was satisfying to see low blow Mares knocked out.

Posted August 25, 2013 4:44 pm

Niether did I. I had Mares by late round stoppage. Instead it was Gonzalez by extremely early round stopage.

Posted August 25, 2013 4:44 pm

The Mad Scientist

Jhonny always had the type of career where he can lose big but win big as well on any given night..congrats to Gonzalez!
