Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Hidalgo: Actually Tunney had 86 pro fights, but some organizations (and websites like BoxRec) don’t give him credit for all of them because some of his earlier fights were not “officially sanctioned.”

When he started in 1915, pro boxing was still pretty unorganized. Back then they had what were called “Newspaper Decisions” wherein the sports writers from the major papers like the NY Times actually determined winners and losers of major bouts.

Moore and Charles were absolute fighting machines and great as well — especially Moore who’s pro career spanned nearly 30 years. The reason why I rank Tunney #1 at this weight class is because Moore had 23 Losses and 10 Draws; Charles had 25 Losses and 1 Draw.

The ONLY fighter Tunney EVER lost to was the great Harry Greb, and many boxing historians/analysts consider Greb to be one of the best MWs/LHWs s of all time. Tunney later avenged that ONE loss by beating Greb.

Ali has made comments over the decades eluding to the fact that his style was largely based on watching old film of Tunney. If you go back and watch Tunney Tribute videos on YouTube, the similarities in their fighting styles is uncanny. (Although Tunney didn’t clown around and showboat by doing “shuffles” and rope-a-dopes.)

Its Tunney for me, with Roy Jones in second (before the 3 L’s in a row). I put Jones in there based on the tallent he had in the ring, not based on the amount of fights he had which ofcourse pale in comparison to the guys from the 1900s

Squared Circle, I thought Tunney had around 70 fights, not 80. Whereas Moore had well over 200 fights and Charles had around 120 fights. Moore had a mess of KOs too.

The best 175-190lbs fighter (Light HW to CW by today’s divisions) of all time is Gene Tunney.

The Fighting Marine beat the great Jack Dempsey twice. And a record of 80 Wins and 1 Loss is pretty damn hard to beat.

It’s a tie: Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles

Wow! The LIAR Correctamundo is still lying. He lied when he was Boxtradamus and he’s lying as Correctamundo. You picked Donaire, fool. We all know it.

Boxtra… You picked Donaire to beat Rigondeaux… That was your pick.

Don’t lie about it.. YOU WERE WRONG AGAIN!!!!!

Posted August 15, 2013 2:19 am

I have read that Cleverly is counting on is referee and judges to protect him. I think the referee will interfere with the fight a lot.

“Hey correctodumba55, who did you have for Donaire vs Rigo? “-I had Rigo IF he followed my advice which he DID SO I was CORRECT yet again!!

Fight Aficionado

“Kovalev, at this point is a LHW version of Deontay Wilder.” – Except Kovalev has already been KOing top 20 opponents while Wilder hasn’t faced anyone in the top 30.

good breakdown by Al.
Looking forward to the fight

Kovalev has fought better competition than Cleverly, but Nathan looks to have more skills.

Too much racism. I’m done with ESB

CORRECTOMUNDO has predicted Kovalev and Geale wins????? General rule is bet the other way…… Hey correctodumba55, who did you have for Donaire vs Rigo? lmao MORON

Posted August 14, 2013 9:13 am

What?!? Cleverley opted for this fight, it wasn’t a mandatory. How exactly is he a coward? And have you stepped foot in the ring?

Cleverly and Barker will win on Saturday, can’t wait.

old guy

This will be an R-rated massacre of Cleverly. The ring will be a brutal slaughterhouse, hope NC’s wife and children are not in the audience.

Posted August 13, 2013 7:45 pm

Cant wait for this fight, hey kovelev may have not fought anyboy as of today but sat he is fighting a somebody, guess will we see if he s the real deal sat.

Posted August 13, 2013 6:48 pm

Kovelev has beaten as many nobodies as Cleverly.

The fights 50/50

Posted August 13, 2013 6:38 pm

That’s what you were probably saying and everybody else was saying about the Calzaghe v Lacy fight, wrong.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Cleverly is going to take the beating of his life this weekend. He simply doesn’t have the power to keep Krusher from relentlessly stalking and attacking him with flurries of power bombs. Should be FUN to watch while it lasts — if you’re not a Brit.

sorry joey cleverly

Posted August 13, 2013 4:27 pm

I’m just happy that it’s on HBO, which is probably due to Kovalev, because HBO has never even mentioned Cleverly before. Whatever the case, I’ll be watching! In Boxer/Puncher battles I normally favor the Boxer, but this time I think I’m rolling with Kovalev. Cleverly keeps claiming that he’s going for the KO, which may be a bad idea.
