Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

I agree that Mitchell is about a 3 in terms of boxing skills. However, he’s a 3 with a very fragile chin. Banks had him wobbled 2-3 different times in their last fight, and could’ve stopped Seth again if he would’ve kept he foot on the gas. If Seth get stopped by Arreola, or the next guy he fights, he’ll get labeled as having a glass jaw.

More of these football players — especially hitting machines like Linebackers and Defensive Backs — have a lot more brain damage than most people realize by the time their just 23-years-old.

If a kid starts playing full-contact Pop Warner ball at 10-years-old… he has literally taken several hundred hard, brain-jarring hits to his head by the time he’s finishing college ball at 22. This is because in most programs, players hit each other in practice 4-5 days a week — and that doesn’t include all the brutal games they play.

One high speed, head-to-head collision in football feels like you’ve been in a train wreck or car accident. On average, they cause more brain damage than getting punched hard in the face a couple times. Scientists are just now starting to figure out how much brain damage these players are taking, and how dangerous the sport is to one’s long term health.

Wanna play football, kid??? Be smart and focus on becoming a kicker or punter.

Seth Mitchell doesn’t have 0 boxing skills… On a scale of 10 he’s a 3.

Lol, as if HBO is the thing. Do you really think in Europe we give a sh.t if Klitschko is broadcasted on HBO or not? Keep on watching your Seth Mitchels and other overweight sluggers with 0 boxing skills.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Adrian: Yeah… I had a feeling that it was the Serbs who were to blame for those brutal wars in the 90s. They were kind of like the Nazis of former Yugoslavia, weren’t they? This Serbian guy I used to work with was in the IT Department.

He had a picture of himself in his Serbian Military uniform on his desk and even brought a bow & arrow into work that he would shoot into walls in a backroom that housed all the heavy-duty network servers, memory/storage devices, and other computer hardware. Dude was from Belgrade, a super macho a-hole and talked about Serbs like they’re the rightful masters of Europe.

But the Bosnians I worked with all seemed to be good people. I’ve met some Albanians through my mother’s friend who’s from there. And there are quite a few of them working at a couple different Italian restaurants I go to. They all seem like pretty cool guys so me. I’m pretty sure all the Albanians I’ve across are either catholic or orthodox. As you know, the eastern orthodox church is officially called the “orthodox catholic church.”

Most Americans have no idea what happened in the Yugoslav wars and don’t realize that the orthodox are also catholic, just not “roman” catholic. You might be the first Croat that I’ve come across, so am pleased to meet you, bro. I’m actually part Slavic (i.e., Slovakian) myself. I can tell that you really know your boxing, so appreciate your posts here on ESB.

It’s the way he fights.

You need RATINGS to generate Money.

If you are going to fight like that you better find some type of angle like Floyd did. Floyd uses his “O” as well as his creativity/coping skills to perform a character the fans will want to buy. If they buy because they like him or hate him, it doesn’t matter. As long as they buy.
Opponents help as well.

Now me, I’m a boxing fan so I can watch Wlad and appreciate it for what it is.

Posted August 4, 2013 11:43 am

K2 Fan:

Then why did HBO have them on in the first place?

Two of Wlad’s losses were on HBO. They were hyping him up then. They wanted a HW on their broadcast.

If you are talking about Jim Lampley and those boys, who cares. They do it with others. They did it with Floyd and Floyd still put up numbers despite them ripping on him. And they’ve done it to him even way back when he was fighting in the lower weight divisions.

Wlad’s his own Promoter so he can be the Financial force behind his own commercial success.

There are several other networks other than HBO.

Many people that I”ve talked to could care less where they are from but they don’t like watching a 6’5, 240+ Greek God-like figure, going out and “boxing”with a safety first, chess like display. They didn’t like when Lennox did it and they don’t like when Wlad does it. They want to see BOMBS. They want t o see those brutal KO’s before round 6. They want aggressiveness. They want excitement. They expect it when you are built like that and have the capability.

Now does that mean Wlad should fight the way the American audience wants him to fight? NO. He tried that. And he was stopped a few times.

Adrian ; Great , perceptive post regarding HBO’s televising tactics . HBO ,
along with a great portion of other media , did everything in their power
to NOT promote the K- Brothers . Just think of how many times , you could read about the ” robot like ” , ” awkward ” style of Vitaly and the ; ” boring ,
“safety first ” , ” timid ” style of the ” china chinned ” Wlad . There were literally countless examples of this . As a result , many , especially weaker minded ” fans ” began to believe this nonsense . So what happened ? Despite
all this adverse publicity , the Klitchkos became great , the media was
FORCED to grudgingly reassess their comments and that’s why HBO is
CRAWLING back ! The Klitchkos are great ALL over the world , why should they worry just about the U.S . ?

Squared – thanks bro! Yeah I was there during those terrible years that ruined everything ….
I live in the states now and the pigs like that guy who called Albanians f..”shiptars” are the ones to blame because of their hatred against everyone who is not Serb ,first they attacked Slovenia in 1991 then Croatia then Bosnia and in the end Kosovo in 1999 and there was the end of those pigs because NATO decide to act and stop those pigs in charge with milosevic who ruined all those lives and their future including his own people !
So that guy was probably angry on Albanians because that was the place they lost …)and btw Albanians are not all Muslims they are 60% muslims 30 % catholic 10 % orthodox …

“A decade of bums” is saddest excuse I’ve ever heard for any boxer being so dominant during his era. And when it comes to the K-Bros, this excuse is totally played out and I’m getting damn sick of hearing it.

So if Wlad dominates for another 3-4 years, the excuse will be further exaggerated to “13-14 years of bums.” Yeah… right! As if that has any basis in reality in a sport like pro boxing. These pathetic excuses are very getting very old and weaker by the day. Real talk.

Posted August 4, 2013 5:40 am

A decade of bums lol pretty sad if that’s the case ….

Wlad & Bro Vitali are the ‘Kings Of Boxing’ right now and the anti’s just hate it. Their but holes are puckering with hatred for the Klitschko Power Rule of The Heavy Weight Division. For a complete DECADE, dominance of all heavy weights. All of them. All of them !!

Posted August 3, 2013 11:46 pm

Peej — I do know for a fact that you care about the klitchkos because you always appear in every klitchko article and mention them almost every chance you get ,if you don’t give a damn about the klitchkos then just don’t give a damn:)
Hbo televises klitchko every time they think any opponent can challenge them ,like remember Austin ? Lol based on teddy atlas prediction Austin was the one that was supposed to beat wlad and hbo fell for it and we know what happen wlad stoped him with only using left hand so how more impressive you want to be to care about them based on their performance ? lol then you have vitaly klitchko vs areola it was televised why? Because they thought areola could challenge vitally …the fact is that hbo televises klitchko fights only if they think their opponents have a chance to beat them othervise they don’t care how impressive they look and they forget that they are losing costumers in USA big time with the bias game the play!

You got your basic nuthugger fans who have no clue about the sport or it’s history, then there’s the fight fans who know what’s up. I personally like the Klits as people, but they are the most BORING fighters I have seen in a while. The nuthuggers praise their records and longevity, but the truth is there are no wins period against any former or future ATG’s. There are also no career defining fights. General sports fans for the most part have never even heard of them, that says something about the state of the division and the sport itself. Then there are the knuckleheads who grasp at straws that argue they are disliked because of their nationality, which is a crock…

Cus D’amato – Discover and Uncover Tribute 2013

on youtube.

Awesome video.

Posted August 3, 2013 8:13 pm

Do you think Wlad’s style is Exciting enough for the American audience to want to stay home on Saturday and pay money?

Just remember, Ward is not popular.

How would you sell Wlad?

Posted August 3, 2013 7:22 pm

Men, Women, Children, and even dogs dreamed of Anna.

She had cross-over appeal.

She was promoted the right way as well. So even if you don’t watch Tennis, now you know her and that interest transfers over to ratings. That’s what some of these athletes are able to do. That’s what Tiger Woods did for Golf. But unlike Kornikova, there was a stretch of time when the young tiger was just pure awesome.

Posted August 3, 2013 7:15 pm

Basketball. If they were in the NBA and as good as Dirk Nowitzki who was able to cross-over, they would be popular. Specifically Wlad.

As far as boxing, if they were a part of a different generation, say the 90’s generation, and were fighting and winning like they do now, and beating those names that were around then, they would be big. Specifically considered Wlad and Vitali do own homes in the States and Wlad at least has made several appearances on American shows.

The current crop of American HWs aren’t even popular. The promotion and everyting is just different.

People forget that Tyson was popular not on his ability alone but because of the great promotional machine that was Bill Cayton/Jim Jacobs and specifically Cus D’amato who laid out specific instructions for them to follow. and capture the audience attention in a sport at the time where the HW division was supbar in the American psyche.

Posted August 3, 2013 4:42 pm

As far as the Klitschkos, Wlad had a better shot of making a bigger impact the first time around when he was a lethal weapon HW, younger, and seen as an unstoppable force. The hiccups hurt him.

If you are going to lose, you tend to have to be like Gatti. And even Gatti wasn’t a Mega Star outside of the boxing circle.

Now if Eastern Europe, will stick with that part of the World, is able to produce a HW version of a YOUNG Kostya Tszyu, and he comes to the states, and is picked up by GBP, I think he would make a big impact.

a Young Tszyu just had that viciousness about him along with that speed, agility, boxing skills and KO Power.

Posted August 3, 2013 4:33 pm

Yeah…I’ll bet if Wlad of Vitali were stars in tennis or in another sport, they would be much more accepted in America.

Posted August 3, 2013 4:28 pm

I wasn’t around during that era but I did here that when Pele towards the end of his career came to play in the States, he was popular.

So playing in the States is key.

But maybe not always.

People still watch Wimbledon. And I wonder how the ratings are for the World Cup.

When R9 was being hyped up in the States for the World Cup, I do remember people talking about him. That impact was first felt in commercials. But after the World Cup, back to playing in Europe.

Posted August 3, 2013 4:17 pm

You have to look at the States on a Map though: we aren’t really “connected” to many countries like others are and I guess…..

The internet may be changing things however. It allows for Universal connection. However, some say there is a shorter attention span today.

I think you do need to break ground here and somehow find your spot. if you don’t, and say you are older, you better be damn good and/or have something fresh that people want.

Look at Mikhail Baryshnikov. He was a ballot dancer and yet, because of his Brilliance, he was able to cross-over and have popularity in the States. Of course he also made the move to the States.

You have Football/Soccer fans here but its still not what I would call popular. Lionel Messi is arguably the best player in the sport yet I wouldn’t say he is popular in the States amongst the “casual” sports fan. But soccer overall is mainly a popular women’s sports in the States.

On the other hand, I would say Roger Federer and Nadal are popular athletes even in the States. Before him, there were others that were popular or known.

Basketball has popular European athletes. But yes, all play in the States.

Popularity is an odd thing though. Some people should be more popular than others but they aren’t. Some shouldn’t even have made it anywhere close the stage except for cleaning it somehow are up their doing their thing (or lack of) and making millions.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Adrian: Wow! That’s a very impressive amateur record, so you must have been a very good boxer. Did you have a brain aneurysm or something? If you were in Croatia in the early 90’s, sounds like you were there during the chaotic Yugoslav wars?? Did you emigrate to the U.S. or stay in Croatia?

I used to work with a whiole bunch of Bosnians and one Serbian guy who fled to the U.S. during the 90s. The Serbian guy was former military and never wanted to talk about what happened over there. He never said anything bad about Croats or Bosnians — only about Albanian Muslims. He used to to call them F’ing “Shiptars.” You could tell he was a mean, ruthless sort of guy.

Hahaha. Yeah. I’ve been up way to long. Since 2 AM yesterday. I feel like a computer that keeps glitching. You start to feel drunk., your eyes have trouble focusing, you’re reading every other line…eh.

Whoever says you can live off of 2-4 hours of sleep must have had a short life. It causes me to have insomnia which is the worst part.

I need a new career.

Posted August 3, 2013 4:02 pm

And because Kostya moved on to Australia instead of America, he isn’t that big there ? Isn’t that exactly my point ?

Posted August 3, 2013 4:01 pm

Because boxing is different, it was an “american thing” with american boxing stars or boxing stars, who lived at least in america. Most americans can’t accept, that HW boxing is now a german thing with ukrainian boxers.

Posted August 3, 2013 3:55 pm

If there is one fighter that could have been bigger in the States it was Kostya Tszyu. He should have come to the States instead of Australia. He was offered to go to Australia though. I think if he had come along later, like right now, he would have been picked up by GBP.

To me, I think he would have been better off in the States…Mentally, Physically, and Technically as far as boxing specifically goes.

Game of thrones, Batman, etc., well this is Hollywood ! How can you compare Hollywood actors with HW boxers ??
Get some sleep man. lol

Posted August 3, 2013 3:51 pm

What’s the difference if they are from other parts of Europe?

Why would Americans hold a bias?

They would like a German athlete, Spanish Athlete, Swiss Athlete, Czech Athlete, etc. but not a Ukrainian or a Russian?

It Makes no sense. So i don’t really understand your point yet.

Posted August 3, 2013 3:50 pm

And Still, how come non-Americans can make it big here?

One of the most popular TV shows, Game of Thrones, has how many American actors? I know of one. I have to think about the others.

And how about Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. Huge hit movies that were played by non-Americans.

O’ wait, they are not from Eastern Europe. So I used Anna but she somehow doesn’t count because she plays Tennis. was that it? I’ll have to scroll back down and check.
Tennis’s popularity goes up and down in the States like boxing. NFL is huge. Not Tennis. It’s all about the “Stars” that make it popular.
Ann was a STAR. She was promoted well off it too. She also lived in the States. And she also had a boost because she played against other “Stars.”

Posted August 3, 2013 3:47 pm

so what did you meant with “ built their career from the start in Europe/Germany instead of the USA like some others? ” others ???

Posted August 3, 2013 3:42 pm

Eh. Sorry. I’ve been up way to long so I’m messing up a bit.

How many of the current/active, World Champion, American boxers are huge stars in their own country?

And then out of that group, which ones are popular World-Wide?

Posted August 3, 2013 3:41 pm

How many are there from Eastern Europe that are highly rated?

How many are fighting in the United States and have been from the start?

How many have an exciting style and can communicate in English?

How many of them are HUGE stars around the World and name the countries they are MEGA Stars in?

How many in boxing from the USA are huge stars that are still at the top of their game compared to the amount in boxing?

The current USA Mega Stars that hold a title are

Floyd and….

Alonzo…., “Now I gotta find some Saloon that has HBO. Oh yeah, gotta suffer through Merchant’s droning metaphors–that’s like listening to Atlas!”

Atlas had Fortuna beating Franco all the way last night.. He didn’t see a damned thing that Franco was landing.. Even though Fortuna was getting outboxed and the fans all had Franco well ahead after 4. Atlas was oblivious.. His brown nosing side-kick doesn’t challenge Atlas a lot..

Atlas railed at the “lousy” judging again as he usually does, saying it’s destroying Boxing as a sport.. The judging was frightning, but the draw wasn’t that bad — I had Franco winning 96-94. Outside of Harold Lederman, Atlas is one of the worst judges I’ve ever seen. He’s yapping and story telling so much he misses a lot of what’s happening unless a massive punch lands.

So , now HBO is willing to televise the Klitchko fights ? Who needs them ?
I remember when the idiot who ran HBO not that long ago , Ross or Russ Greenberg or something , made a statement once about the : ” reluctance ”
of HBO to telecast the Brother’s fights , because ” no one can tell them apart ” !
With brilliant leadership like that , no wonder HBO is behind the eight ball .
In any case , it didn’t seem to hurt the K – Brothers any , they simply sold the T. V . rights to their fights to some 120 different countries and made a bundle !
Personally I don’t care if HBO NEVER broadcasts their fights , especially now that Larry is gone anyway , I would just them on EPIX anyway !
BTW , I cancelled my HBO subscription immediately after hearing that dumbell
Greenberg’s statement .

Posted August 3, 2013 3:14 pm

The Klitschkos aren’t bigger in the USA because they built their career from the start in Europe/Germany instead of the USA like some others?

Posted August 3, 2013 3:04 pm

Like I said, Arnold lives in US since 1968, whereas Vitali and Wlad moved on to Germany. Vitali was smart enough to NOT sign a contract with Don King and this is the point ! If Vitali would’ve signed this contract ( and Wlad of course ), they were now HUGE stars in America !

Posted August 3, 2013 2:45 pm

I’d rather watch it on epix, now I gotta find some Saloon that has HBO. Oh yeah, gotta suffer through Merchant’s droning metaphors–that’s like listening to Atlas!

Lombardi…, “Winning isn’t the most important thing. It’s the ONLY thing.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:56 pm

And yet Floyd can’t beat Wlad in a fight. So what does that say about Floyd?

Posted August 3, 2013 1:56 pm

People talk about popularity but winning is more important… Gatti was super popular but he couldn’t box very well.

Jack Dempsey was the biggest drawing card of all time, but his fights with Gene Tunney outdrew any of his other fights by over 100%… Tunney’s record was hyped up.. He had one loss in some 80 fights. That’s what really go everybody excited. People will pay a lot of money to see somebody who seems unbeatable … if they’re fighting somebody else who seems unbeatable.

You can see amateur fights that cost 6 dollars to attend. There are 322 people watching — and the fights are spectacular slugfests with everybody screaming bloody murder for a couple raw kids who will never be heard from.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:55 pm

And yet Floyd can’t bet him. END/

Posted August 3, 2013 1:54 pm

I’ll entertain it.

Could Floyd beat those 3 bums? NO. So what does that make Floyd?

Again,if Wlad is not that good, tell Floyd to step into the HW division and fight Wlad.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:48 pm

You’re a fat white guy living in his mother’s basement. You need to get out, get some Sun, and freshen up.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:42 pm

Boxing is entertainment.

If they are not popular in the States it isn’t because they are from the Ukraine. It doesn’t matter because most wouldn’t even know who they are so they wouldn’t even be able to know they are from the Ukraine.

Some make it. Some don’t.

Floyd made it big and yet Andre Ward hasn’t.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:40 pm

Anna crossed over to non-tennis fans. Boxing does the same with their popular stars. It’s the “casual” fans that give you the popularity and the most money.

Jordan did the same with basketball to become Global.

You have to find a way to cross over.

And YES, Hitler was a good point.

How did Arnold make it despite what he would have going against him during that era?
Austrian, German Accent, Huge Muslces during an era of hippies and then he made it in Film.

Arnold found a way to break in. He was smart, funny, and had determination to find that small space to open it up and break through. He wanted to make it in America and he did. He moved here, planted his feet, and became a Huge Star.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:37 pm

Popular doesn’t always mean better either.

We see examples of this daily in other parts of the entertainment industry.

It’s an odd thing.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:31 pm

P4P is another way of saying “I can’t compete with the HW Champ.”

No matter how good you think you are, no matter how much you are praised, no matter how much money you can use to wipe away your tears, you know, at the end of the day, that you are not the best. You are not THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.

No matter how great SRR was, he was no Joe Louis.

But but but but….no buts. You are either the best or you are not.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:29 pm

Junio YOU don’t get it. Bodybuilding is not boxing, tennis is not boxing and Wlad is not Anna ! TENNIS HAS NOT THE SAME AUDIENCE LIKE BOXING ! HW boxing is another world !

Hitler ? Are you serious, you come up with Hitler ? You definitely write the same BS like Sredmond.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:23 pm

They’re HW Champions and the best overall in boxing. Deal with it.

Posted August 3, 2013 1:22 pm

Yes us Americans could care less about the Klitchkos. If we did care they would be on TV here in Anerica because they would get good ratings. That is the reason these cable outlets show fights. For money and ratings. If they don’t get ratings then they don’t get money. So once again we could care less. That doesn’t mean they aren’t dominant. They are the best and have been since Lewis retired. Nobody can beat them. But still don’t change the fact that Americans could care less about the Klitchkos

Posted August 3, 2013 1:22 pm

Do you know when Fedor was at his peak in the States he was flooded by American fanboys when he came here and they applied pressured to Dana White to get him in the UFC?

Is Fedor not “White’ and “Russian” ?

Posted August 3, 2013 12:59 pm

So let me understand what you are saying:

Wlad is HUGE Across the WORLD except he is not popular in only ONE country, the United States. And that is because he is White and from the Ukraine.

Is that right?

Wlad is HUGE all over the World except the USA?

Posted August 3, 2013 12:58 pm

Give me a big name opponent that would help boost his name like Floyd had with Oscar or Lennox had with Tyson?

Who is World Famous that he can fight?

Posted August 3, 2013 12:53 pm

American teens and married man were basically jerking off at the television screen when Anna Kornikova was in her prime.

So don’t give me that crap about Americans not like anyone from the former Soviet Countries.

Posted August 3, 2013 12:50 pm

Junio Wlad doesn’t have a big name opponent to help boost his name.

Did you get that from Sredmond ??? You write the same BS like he always did.

Posted August 3, 2013 12:45 pm

You need “Something” extra if you are lacking in what the American audience once. What is it? I don’t always know. It varies.

Floyd Mayweather wasn’t as popular until he changed his character from “Pretty Boy” to “Money May.” That change, and getting to fight big name fighters like Oscar De La Hoya specifically, is what catapulted his career.

Wlad doesn’t have a big name opponent to help boost his name. And although he is of great Character, he doesn’t seem to have a “character” role that Americans want at the moment OR haven’t bothered to care because he is not being promoted the right way (which can be tricky).

It’s not a precise thing this “popularity” status. Some who should make it, don’t. And others that shouldn’t, do.

And its not always about talent either considering the trash many entertainers are doing today andm making money.

Posted August 3, 2013 12:39 pm

Who is one of the most famous “non-Americans” in the States for the past say, 35+ years?

Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I know Bill Burr talked about it and made it into a bit so I’ll be careful not to quite take it from him but the idea is as followed:

Arnold became popular in bodybuilding. That’s Bodybuilding. That’s where he made his first impact in America.

Arnold became popular in acting. That’s ACTING. Seriously, ACTING. Let me say that again….ACTING. An Austrian with a heavy accent and new to acting “made it” and became a huge Star.

Arnold married an American Royalty, Maria Shriver.

Arnold became a very successful business man in America.

Arnold became a GOVERNOR of California.

O’ Yeah, Americans don’t like European “talent.”

Posted August 3, 2013 12:29 pm

I’m tired of hearing the insecure say it is about Wlad’s nationality that Americans don’t watch him. it’s just not true.

If it were true, how come we have other athletes and entertainers, notably actors and musicians, that are popular in the States?

Seriously, Batman, Superman, and te recent Spiderman were played by non-Americans.

There are stars in the NBA and MLB that are popular “non-Americans.”

Wlads in his prime. I’m beginning to think he is better than a prime vitali.

Posted August 3, 2013 10:33 am

I just cant see Povetkin winning this. He got a good at everything great at nothing style. He wont get past the jab.

Posted August 3, 2013 10:29 am

I bet Wlad would not pass any drug test. His muscle growth and tone screams peds to a knowing eye.

Posted August 3, 2013 10:03 am

Wlad has arms the size of most normal guys legs. Povetkin is getting KTFO. Pov only chance is his overhand right. Then what happens when Wlad takes Pov’s belt, does WBA take it back and award it to Haye??

Posted August 3, 2013 10:01 am

Sorry for the personal question squared but I was thinking since you like boxing and know about boxing quit a bit based on the comments you post here and with the you body attributes you say you have I thought you probably boxed before if not it a shame …..

Yes I did box quite a big as a amateur back in Croatia 1980’s and early 90’s
My record was 47 -0 and one draw but a blood bleeding In the brain finished my carrier not from boxing though …

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Yo Adrian! Yes, I boxed quite a bit growing up throughout Jr. High and High School. But these were just backyard slug-fest brawls with guys from school and/or the neighborhood. So I knew from an early age that I have heavy hands, a lot of power and solid chin.

But I didn’t get any formal training in boxing until after college football — when I was 22-years-old. Did a whole lot of training, hittin’ the bags, sparring, leaning different combinations, and eventually became left-handed from the orthodox stance.

My best punches are definitely my fast jab, which is thrown like a fully-extended whip, and my left hook. However, because I am naturally right-handed, I also have a lot of power in my straight, hook and upper cut.

I had some amateur fights, but quickly came to understand my disadvantages in boxing when fighting much taller, longer, more experienced fighters. I was simply carrying way too much muscle mass from years of power-lifting and football. Never got KO’d in the ring, but got outboxed by technically-skilled boxers who were like 6’3″ and 6’4″.
Too me, it was very frustrating getting outboxed by weaker, skinny guys.

How about you, Adrian? You ever done any amateur or pro boxing???

Posted August 3, 2013 7:19 am

Squared – did you ever box ?

I watched Klitschko-Barrett then Klitschko-Mormeck the other night and Wlad has improved a huge amount, he’s so much better that it’s like watching a different fighter. Wlad doesn’t seem to make mistakes now.

Fights that are really hard to endure are ones like Ali-Evangelista… Or Ali-Mathis.. They were good for promoting non-violence and that’s about it.

This pundit says…, “facing the likes Jean Marc Mormeck, Francesco Pianeta, and Mariusz Wach in the past two years. If HBO had aired any of those mismatches, it would have likely brought in poor ratings.”

Epix televised them nationally in the US … and they did very well despite running in the afternoon.. Usually they air twice because they get a good audience both times so why not???

The Wach fight did really well and went the distance.

As if they’re worse than the setups HBO gave Berto, Broner or any of its house fighters in recent years.

And aside from one failed drug test, years ago, you have evidence of that? I have fund that many times elite athletes who are, by reason of ability and commitment, a cut above, are the target of unsubstantiated rumours. Sometimes they are true – Lance Armstrong, sometimes they are not – Carl Lewis. But what IS evident is that when the opposition can’t best them on their merits they MUST be on the juice. Pathetic. Could it be they are, simply, better?

Posted August 2, 2013 12:21 pm

just shut up and listen

Very few people are QUALIFIED to comment on Pulev, particularly outside of Germany. I am ONE of the qualified people. Why? Because I have watched (live) most of his fights. And I want to dispel a myth right here and right now. That myth is that Pulev is NOT an exceptional puncher. Pulev is in fact a VERY hard puncher but there are three main reasons why he ‘only’ has a KO percentage of 53%. Reason one, since the start he has been almost exclusively matched with VERY durable guys like Guinn (never stopped in 9 defeats) Page (stopped only 4 times in 43 defeats) Vidoz (stopped just 3 times in 11 defeats). Reason 2 is the majority on these decision wins have occurred over just the 6 and 8 rounds distance. Pulev has been proven to carry his power into later rounds and would have likely stopped many of these fighters too had they been scheduled a long distance. Reason 3 is actually the main reason why his KO percentage DECEIVES his great power, and it’s actually ironic too. But again I’ve seen most of his fights live and thertefore I know what I’m talking about. Reason 3 is actually BECAUSE OF THE FACT he hits DAMN HARD, which is one of the main reasons he has up to know just a 53 % KO rate. And what I mean by that is I notice (and youtube it for yourself guys) that early in most of his fights he will get through with some very clean and hurtful shots resulting in his opponent crawling into a defensive shell for most of the remainder and merely try to survive. Trying to knock out a defensively minded fighter is a very hard thing to do, particularly when you’re still some what green yourself (i.e. after only 5-15 professional fights). Anyway the MORAL of the story is that Pulev hits DAMN HARD. Harder than his 53 per cent KO rate would have you believe. And anyone who suggest Pulev isn’t a particularly hard hitter is IGNORANT. Will he KO Thompson? Who knows. Thompson has only been KO’d by Wlad before and while Pulev hits very hard he doesn’t hit as hard as Wlad. But then Wlad would be probably the hardest single hitter in the division anyway Pulev would actually KO most fighters in the top 10 because these guys would come to fight and not to survive. And finally, yes the writer of this article was a cretin.

Posted August 2, 2013 7:51 am

Wlad always fights a safe boring take no chances especially with southpaws if he throws his right hand I will be amazed he is so scared of a counter left .His brother Vitali I like much better I can not even keep awake during a Wlad fight and lets be honest he leaves the bigger more tougher guys to his brother I can see know why Wlad did not want the Chisora fight he does not like guys that will maul or try to maul him or force him in a type of fight he does not like.

Posted August 2, 2013 7:38 am

Wlad grabs WAY TOO MUCH but its effective. Unless you can find a ref that will penalize him for holding you’re in trouble.

Posted August 2, 2013 7:14 am

50 odd knockouts and this moron sad excuse for a writer more interested in clinching and his fear of….

Posted August 2, 2013 6:45 am

“That should be enough for Wladimir to trounce Povetkin, but we’ve seen Wladimir worn and stopped before by the likes of Lamon Brewster and Ross Puritty; so it’s possible he could lose to Povetkin, but still not likely” Next time, start with something like this, so I don’t waste my time reading.

Posted August 2, 2013 6:02 am

@Master Ken – I don’t necessarily agree that the Wlad of today is much better than the Wlad of 10 years ago. The difference is that the Klit team have done a very good job of match-making over the years. Example: Wlad takes on the boxers (ie Chambers, Haye, etc.) and Vitali takes on the fighters/brawllers (ie Arreola, Chisora, etc.). I don’t have an issue per se with Wlad’s clinching style (other than it is extremely boring to watch), but to me the main issue is the fact that the competition in today’s HW division don’t have the skill set to off-set the clinches. If you watch either the Ali-Frazier or Ali-Foreman fights you will see that although Ali would clinch, both Frazier and Foreman were skilled enough and worked the body enough to still be very effective. Today’s HWs just accpet being held/grabbed and never let their hands go. Again, no knock against Wlad but it frustrates the heck out of me to watch how low the skill level of the HWs have dropped over the years. Peace.

Posted August 2, 2013 4:48 am

The reason he is not popular is just not because of his style it’s because of his nationality. Americans get exited for Golf and Baseball, even soccer a sport many americans hate became popular when U.S was doing somewhat good at the Olympics. Of course being American is not a requirement since Paq became very populer because of his style.

Posted August 2, 2013 3:54 am

The best out there for Wlad is not Povetkin, it’s Pulev.

At least the US viewers will finally get a chance to watch two quality heavyweights. Can’t hardly do that locally.

Posted August 2, 2013 1:13 am

They don’t get on because they are boring. They are dominant but his jab jab jab then over hand right then grab style gets boring. Then he throws an occasional hook in there also off the jab. No body shots. They are just boring to watch. But they are dominant and affective and they are great heavies but they are just boring.

Posted August 2, 2013 12:57 am

Agree with the brothers being supreme of the division.

Posted August 1, 2013 11:52 pm

What’s the reason Wlad doesn’t get on “American TV” ?

At one point, he was promoted as the next big thing on HBO but he had some hiccups in his career.

It becomes hard selling a Big HW that has been knocked out twice on your air against “Lesser” known opponents. And then on top of it, he altered his style to fit his need of becoming better but in doing so becomes a safety first cautious fighter which again, is a harder sell than what the spoiled American audience wants out of their HW Champions___Excitement.

They have been on EPIX lately which is a rising channel.
And EPIX will air their fight live which tends to be in the afternoon on the East Coast America. HBO would rather you fight here and have it at night.

Posted August 1, 2013 11:48 pm

Fact is there are the Klitchkos then everyone else. And that is how it will be till they retire.

Posted August 1, 2013 11:33 pm

Posted August 1, 2013 10:47 pm

Nope he sure doesn’t. He gets paid enough selling out where he sells out. But that’s also another reason he doesn’t get on American TV. But once again he doesn’t need American TV either

Was this article a joke? Was it written by David Haye or Chisora? Ali was the king of clinching, yet it was rarely brought up. The author writes ?we’ve seen Wladimir worn and stopped before by the likes of Lamon Brewster and Ross Puritty…” yeah, what was that 50 years ago, before he was taught to box by the GREAT Emmanuel Steward?

Posted August 1, 2013 8:29 pm

The writer is correct when saying Wlad is a boring fighter. And he does clinch a lot. But he is also dominant over everybody. Yeah his last few opponents had no business being in the ring with him but really, who does in the heavy weight division. It is the Klitchkos and then everybody else.

Apparently, Bill Phanco has no love for Wladimir Klitschko based upon the huge number of times that he slammed him during the course of that very short article. I truly can’t envision that Dereck Chisora could have written a more negative piece. If someone is going to hold themselves out as a journalist, they should atleast present some pretense of journalistic integrity instead of simply slamming someone in a manner that you would expect to find from a cracked out retard somewhere on an online forum.
