thats 16.5 of water not muscle, this is the fight game and if you looked at the names i mentioned before you would understand that these guys don’t make excuses for P/R but it did drain them obviously.

What makes anyone think Chad would want another fight with ward at any weight? Bute would sooner fight froch bare knuckled the next day, Chad is mentally fragile when fighting someone aggressive, always have been dispite his skills…..7 pounds in 3 months? Really? Chavez did 12 pounds in 2 days with Andy lee, there will NEVER be a rematch Dawson never made a excuse for himself, we shouldn’t make any for him, he lost because he didn’t know ward had a RJJ left hook, and could shut down his jab before he could get it established.

Posted September 10, 2012 11:30 pm

Andre Ward is simply a BETTER fighter than we ever realized and he keeps raising the bar on his own performances

Posted September 10, 2012 7:54 pm

Fight Aficianado is 100% correct he will HAVE to sell that story in order to get some money fights but guys like Cloud and others will be emboldened, Bad Chad ain’t “Bad” at all…

Fight Aficionado

My predictions for Dawson: 1.) He pulls an about face on this weight thing. Before the fight it’s no issue, but now it’ll become the main issue both for the loss and in the lead up to his next fight at 175. 2.) He’ll say that he’s going to be back at full strength at 175. 3.) But he won’t be, he’ll remain weaker than before mentally and physically and he’ll get blasted out if they match him with anyone good. 4.) One year from now he’ll have no title. 5.) In two years he’ll be a stepping stone. 6.) Many will say going down to 168 ruined him, he never should’ve gone there.

Posted September 10, 2012 7:44 pm

Well, despite his still relatively young age, Ward has beaten more quality fighters than some of the ATGs fought in their whole careers.

Correction: Hopkins fought 2 of his best fights at the age of 46 vs Jean Pascal.

Posted September 10, 2012 4:19 pm

Hopkins fought 2 of his best fights at age 36 vs Jean Pascal, becoming the oldest man in Boxing history to win a major world title.. He definitely fought better in the 2nd Pascal fight than the first one, because he won — although he was older … Older is not necessarily worse.. After he whipped Pascal, Hopkins claimed to be rejuvenated and ready to whip Chad Dawson.. Hopkins used a different strength trainer for Calzaghe and didn’t like the results at all.

Posted September 10, 2012 4:18 pm

Was Hopkins better in 2012 v Dawson or in 2008 v Calzaghe?

Posted September 10, 2012 3:38 pm

JoeKidd…. Matthysse was fighting Olusegun.. Not a very well known opponent.. When he fights Khan, Bradley, or Garcia it will be bigger.. I agree he was great, but Ward-Dawson was a bigger fight and is drawing more comments and stories by far..

Posted September 10, 2012 3:21 pm

Goosey… Calzaghe said he was still gettng better when he quit.. And his father and trainer Enzo said, “Joe’s last fight was his best.” And actually if you watch the fight Enzo was telling him he was better than ever. So based on that he wasn’t an old man. Wladimir Klitschko is a better fighter at 36 than he was at 27. It all depends if you keep learning and adding to your skills every year. Modern athletes peak later than their predecessors because of modern training methods, better diets, and longer and more intense training camps.

Posted September 10, 2012 3:16 pm

Ward wasn’t even the top show on Sat night. Matthysse was electrifying.

Posted September 10, 2012 3:12 pm

TARK… “Dawson beat Hopkins by a wider margin.. And Ward dominated Dawson like he was his daddy.”

Calzaghe beat Hopkins in 2008, 4 years before Hopkins lost to Dawson.. Calzaghe was 36 years old when he beat Hopkins and was fighting with bad hands.. Dawson was 29 when he beat Hopkins. But I guess none of that counts in TARKLAND…

It’s two totally different things training at a weight that is not your typical weight and re hydrating back to your normal weight on fight day. Apples to Oranges comparison. The health tangibles are totally different and so are fighters. And of course, so as not to appear a sore loser, Chad is not going to make excuses for himself in public so of course he’s going to give Ward his props, unless you tend to believe everything you listen to.

Posted September 10, 2012 1:18 pm

This would be very accurate. DLH looked like a shell of himself when he went down to 143 to fight Pac, and Roy Jones lost to Tarver in much the same way…..going down in weight. Ignoramuses think it’s an excuse although, no one would know how the fight would turn out if fought at the Lt. heavyweight limit. It may be totally different.

Posted September 10, 2012 1:07 pm

As long as you believe it. That’s like Margarito saying “well, since Cotto beat Shane, and I beat Cotto, I know I will definitely beat Shane.” In theory in works out well, but never in the literal sense because as you have seemed to forget, styles makes fights. Always have and always will.

Ward cemented his legacy by cleaning out the super middleweight division and now beating the linear heavyweight champion. Time for Ward to move north and take on Tavoris Cloud and Jean Pascal at light heavyweight.

I think it was more like they avioded him. The Froch fight is maybe the only one who can be given credit for seriously wanting to fight Calzaghe, but at that point there was really no point to it in Joe’s career.

Its pretty obvious the Calzaghe Ward argument is now going to rage on maybe for years. But what amazes me is how easy it is to spot the haters on here. As a fan of boxing rather than particular fighters to me its plain to see both Calzaghe and Ward are exeptional fighters. Any fan who discredits either fighter with excuses is a hater in my book as their acheivements are there for all to see.

You win the GOLD medal and have multiple world championship belts and are undefeated you have earned the right to fight at home!!! All the forementioned fighters have loses have been knocked down or out, they were all great or very good,Ward is in a class by himself.Roy Jones,Pacquiao,Holmes,Tyson,Morales,Duran all have been knocked out…Ward is not only undefeated he has barely lost a round!!! If that is average you dont know boxing or maybe your just a hater……

Posted September 10, 2012 12:43 pm

Cazaghe beat Hopkins, no queston about it in my mind.. The thing is, how much did he beat him by because he got knocked on his ass — and lost a few rounds.. Dawson beat Hopkins by a wider margin.. And Ward dominated Dawson like he was his daddy. That, and the fact Calzaghe avoided Dawson, Tarver, Froch, and Johnson, gives you a good idea who was better.

Posted September 10, 2012 12:09 pm

Funny how boxers ALWAY look weaker, slower, sapped, drained, depleted, depressed, demoralized and dominated when they are in the ring with a BETTER fighter…No one made Kessler, Froch or Dawson look so bad EXCEPTION Andre Ward….These guys are professionals the terms were set MONTHS ago, they were agreed to and the event took place so the result does NOT really need all these speculative reasons for why Dawson got destroyed…. The Pure answer is that Ward kept punching him in the face and avoiding being hit cleanly himself, everything else does not even matter because it cannot impact the historical outcome….. Ward TKO Dawson round 10!

Posted September 10, 2012 10:09 am

A 15lb cut is nothing in the fight game. He said himself his walk around weight is 178. He eats whatever. For world title fights, at the 30 day weigh in, a fighter must be within 10% of fight weight ie. 16.5lbs (165+16.5=181.5 30 days prior). This is boxing!

Posted September 10, 2012 9:46 am

Cory cmith

Exactly this was not Dawsons weight. He looked sapped. The things a fighter wants to do is not there if you dont have the energy to do it. He didnt look himself.

Posted September 10, 2012 9:01 am

Dawson looked so much weaker than he used

Posted September 10, 2012 8:59 am

The reality is that someone was going to have to make a concession in terms of weight and Dawson laid out the challenge so its on him to meet Ward…Going up usually is HARDER than going down…. The same fools that will decry Chavez Jrs explosive weight gains when he boils down are trying to give Dawson a pass even though he rehydrated 9 pounds heavier…. AGAIN these are excuses and he was in trouble from the 3rd round on so stamina cannot be sold to me…. I saw a guy that was SHOCKED by how damn good and strong Ward was and could not handle the event…. Chad was not huffing and puffing he was getting caught over the top and eating that short lefthook…. We all KNEW for months that he was coming down in weight, now a preset excuse is being promoted by some….. Chad to his credit admitted that Ward is on another level and he is taking his ass back to 175 hopefully to fight some guys that are NOT 40 years old

Posted September 10, 2012 8:41 am

What sense does that make? Ward and Kessler are vastly inferior to Ward in terms of standing within the boxing community he has already beat BOTH their asses handily and stunned everyone by destroying Chad Dawson… Kessler, Froch and Ward all have wins away from home, the ONLY difference is that Andre Ward has NEVER lost at home or anywhere else as a professional…. Home cooking is ripe for discussion during a close fight NONE of Wards fights Dawson, Kessler or Froch have been anything considered “Close” using Nottigham or Denmark as the benchmark for how talented Ward is or isn’t is just “sour grapes”…. Fact is that Kessler and Froch are NOT in Wards league and God knows Chad Dawson isn’t…..Great fighters win under ALL circumstances (Floyd Mayweather) good or very good fighters complain about lame nonsense when they get dusted…. Pac Man has been winning away from his homeland for YEARS tell Froch and Kessler to take notes either that or stay out of the ring with Andre Ward because if the bout took place on Mars the result would be the same….

i think kessler and froch would price themselves out of a fight with ward at this point, and ward was in a no win situation, if the fight was close people would have said “hometown cooking” if he koed dawson people would have said because of the weight, when williams was tearing up the competition and wanted floyd at 147, floyd said he was “to big” and everyone accepted that WTF?

Lets talk greatnes when or if Ward´s dare to fight Froch and kessler outside outside the US.

Posted September 10, 2012 7:49 am

there has been TOO many comments about the weight loss…First: no one said anything about the weight issues when glenn johnson who is older and harder for him to lose the weight was asked to lose the same amount to participate in the super six, and he did a great job. Second: dawson said there was no problem with making the weight, because he never diets when he preps for fights, if he wants a burger and fries he gets that, this time he cut out the junk food and the weight came off easily, no different than when paul williams fought from 147-154-160, i do agree that ward can leave okland, however, like a devon alexander ward dispite his talents is still building his fan base, he dosent have the same base as a kessler, abraham, froch, least not yet. Third: ward made the point before the fight that dawson isnt fighting someone in their 40s, besides pascall that he lost, he has made a career at doing just that, his form, and combos looks smooth against older fighters but not against someone his age with more energy and faster than him. Lastly: dawsons corner should have stopped the fight WAY BEFORE chad did, now he is ruined because he knows his best isnt good enough for elite. im so used to seeing wards infighting, i forgot how GOOD his outside game really is, i think dawsons corner did to, he shut down dawson jab and out jabbed him, just like out muscled miranda, out streingth abraham, out bullyied froch, out overalled kessler who was the overall pick for the super six, the man is a natural talent he wasnt burning on all cylinders for any of those fights! i hate that he is so big, his in/out fighting fighting and adaptability would give floyd nighmares if they were close to the same size.

class act -I’m interested in boxing again. Ward should be the blue print for how up and coming fighters should operate in and out of the ring.

The Kingslayer

Not really when you consider the tear he’s been on since 2009, and he’s barely lost a couple rounds in the process. Gold medalist, lineal champion (arguably two weight) and now he’s dominating P4P boxers, Ward will book his canastota ticket before he reaches 35.

Posted September 10, 2012 7:19 am

The Kingslayer

I can’t see anyone close to his division beating him, Ward would have to move up to Cruiserweight to lose. The only fight I could see giving Ward at least a challenge would be Martinez.

AW makes the most of what he has, uses his head, and most of all, really has a fighter’s mentality- turns it on when he has the opportunity to hurt- There will be stronger and faster fighters than Ward but his advantage is learned skills + desire to impose his will

Man i just cant say enough about Ward what a performance against a top skill guy in Dawson regardless of the weightloss. As much as I’d like to rush him to #1 p4p i cant put him above Pac, Floyd and Martinez just yet because all of those guys have fought above their heads in weight but u certainly can make the argument for S.O.G right now.

Calzaghe 2

tark,Calzaghe v Hopkins, close fight on the scorecards, but Calzaghe won, Hopkins taking a breather in the 10th round, cheating basically, Calzaghe won the fight, no discussion.

Posted September 9, 2012 10:35 pm

Calzaghe barely beat Hopkins in a highly disputed SD when B-Hop was 43.. Dawson beat B-Hop in style.. Ward stopped Dawson easily after total domination.. The guys Calzaghe refused to fight: Chad Dawson, Carl Froch, Glen Johnson, and Antonio Tarver were all tough opponents …. How many times did Calzaghe get knocked down? How many times did Ward get knocked down? Who was easier to hit? Who had the stronger hands?

Posted September 9, 2012 10:07 pm

You think and say it true, so it’s true — that’s some strong evidence — B-Hop must use peds.

Ward is damn good. Dawson called him out, he said he had no problem making the weight, he was supposed to be stronger and was gonna KO Ward cause 168 is where all his KOs came from. Ward dominated him. Nobody should even be hating on what Ward has done

Posted September 9, 2012 9:52 pm

Hopkins being mention about peds. Even Pascal said he was on peds. Nice thing about boxing people in the inner circle start seeing something wrong and little by little info of the truth starts leaking out. Hopkins is a pedder 100 percent. That has been known for quite some time

Posted September 9, 2012 9:44 pm

Mike, let Ward be Ward and appreciate what he’s able to do in the ring. As for Golovkin, I too think he’s a serious force that will have to be dealt with. Personally, I would like to see him square off against the winner of Martinez vs Chavez (I think Martinez wins that one). Then, if he does well, maybe Ward at 168. But don’t put too much into what the fans demand — because if they listened to the fans we would have had Pac vs Mayweather about 3 years ago.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:41 pm

Dude your dreaming when you say Gennady can beat Ward. Your on Crack if you believe that.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:36 pm

Ward Is Pound For Pound Then Best Boxer on Earth, He would Box Mayweathers ears off if they could both make weight.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:34 pm

No, Froch is very good. It’s just that Ward is better.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:29 pm

Ward has been a great amateur and pro and he is extremely well balanced in all aspects of the game. He is far from exciting and will never draw like Sugar Ray Leonard or Roberto Duran. The only guy who could possibly beat him is a middleweight from Uzbek : Gennady Golovkin. This fight will not occur until Golovkin beats Martinez. Then the public will demand that these two square off and determine who is best P4P.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:29 pm

Agreed, but I don’t understand why it took him beating Dawson for you to see that Ward is a great fighter. I mean cleaning out everyone at 168 wasn’t enough??? (What a tough crowd!)

Posted September 9, 2012 9:28 pm

Yes, yes, they are always “over-rated” after they lose. Get real. Dawson is a very good fighter and he assured everyone that the trip back to 168 was no problem. Even during the weigh-in they said Dawson looked great. So enough with that argument. And hometown or not Froch won’t beat Ward — boxing isn’t a football game. Just because Froch beat Bute doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a world beater — Ward dominated him and no amount of fan support is going to change the fact that Ward is more skilled than Froch. .

Calzaghe 2

Still is.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:18 pm

Calzaghe 2

Patrick2,Ward won the Super six, won every fight, still wasn’t sold, but he beat Dawson easily, forget about home advantage, he put Dawson away, who was a very good fighter.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:18 pm

froch really isn’t that good though, its a waste of time. moving up to 175 and fighting cloud would be a good one. but if he moved up too fast he would have no name to fight to create a legacy against. and he definitely cant fight at cruiser he is only like 5’11”

Posted September 9, 2012 9:17 pm

Let me go further. Ward mows down the whole super middleweight division with relative ease, and most were still pissing on him — ‘he always fights in his hometown’, ‘he has no power’, ‘he’s boring’, ‘he’s a dirty fighter’, blah blah blah. He has one fight on HBO, gets a stoppage and suddenly everyone has him at #1 PfP. Damn Andre, you should have just skipped the Olympics and the whole Super 6 tournament and just knocked someone out on HBO.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:16 pm

fighers always say that to convince themselves. once you grow out of a weight class or move down to compete with someone very good and confortable at a weight class, the first thing to go are the legs when you get tired. alot of the lbs come from muscle mass and cause earlier muscle fatigue. classic examples of guys with decent legs and chins moving down a few lbs in weight and getting ko’d or dramatically beat. roy jones vs tarver, corrales vs mayweather, cotto vs pacquiao, de la hoya vs pacquiao, escobedo vs broner, hatton vs pacaquiao now dawson vs ward

Posted September 9, 2012 9:13 pm

Ward won, so cannot criticise him at all. HOWEVER, Dawson is a fairly average fighter who was always vastly overrated in some quarters, in addition to that, he had to boil down to Super Middle which certainly weakened him. So the result was not all that surprising. Ward needs to go on the road really, a rematch with Froch in the UK would strengthen his credibility. Other than that, he has the same problem Calzaghe had, in that there are few valid opponents at Super Middle in comparison to him…Groves and DeGale look like the best up and comers, but they are not ready yet. Tempting Martinez up to Super Middle is the only other real option apart from an away fight with Froch.

Posted September 9, 2012 9:07 pm

it’s funny how just two days ago seemed the overwhelming majority thought Ward was a bum, despite him winning the Super 6 and being a Gold Medal winner. But he stops Dawson and suddenly it’s all praise. I’m not saying his win over Dawson wasn’t a[nother] great performance, rather it’s that boxing fans are so damn fickle.

Not win, maybe, but a good test for Andre Ward style.

Posted September 9, 2012 8:52 pm

Dawson’s problem was Ward hit him with sneaky shots he didn’t coming — those are the shots that do the most damage. It had very little to do with dropping back down to 168.

That trainer of Chad Dawsons needs his ass kicked. Listening between rounds it was obvious their plan was to let Ward be first and wait for him to move in so Chad could counter him. Why in the hell would you do that? Ward is a supremely talented offensive fighter and Chads strength is his ability to move in and move straight back out again! That plan they adopted was doomed from the start! A lot of fighters lose fights simply because they concentrate way too much on their opponents strengths instead of concentrating on their own and implementing a plan based on that.

Ward right now is the best. Forget Calzaghe he is retired. Count only woho ou there fighting. i do believe Calzaghe would beat Ward if Calzaghe was still in his 30’s. Hopkins “the excutioner” word is slowly coming out about this guy as more people come forward from the dark. Hopkins is dirty will always be dirty. I am not surprised he was on peds. I dont put anything past him.

P4P discussions aren’t too be taken too seriously and I don’t give them much weight but Ward has definitely been on a run over the last few years and he’s up there with the other three – Mayweather, Pacman and Martinez. My only question is who the hell is he going to fight next? Aside from the winner of Cloud-Pascal is there really anyone out there that would make for a big matchup with him? Maybe Golovkin? Campillo? I’m not really sure what’s left for him at this point.

Andre “Too Strong” Ward is the P4P King, no doubt about it, Mayweather Jr. is a joke compare to him, inside and outside the ring, Andre Ward IS boxing now, all around the world, like Roy Jones Jr. was in the 90’s, Sugar Ray Leonard in the 80’s, and Alli, Sugar Ray Robinson, & Joe Louis before

Interview on Speaking of the size, a lot has been made of you coming down from 175lbs to 168lbs. A couple of years ago you defeated Tomasz Adamek who is now competing at heavyweight. How has the weight change affected you?

A lot of people think I’m more of cruiserweight because I have a big frame, but the truth is that I walk around at 178lbs. This is really the first time that I’ve done all of the right things to make weight as far as dieting and conditioning are concerned. I’ve never really had to do this because I’ve always been able to eat whatever I wanted to make 175lbs. My focus before was always to put on muscle to get bigger and now I’m focusing on what I should be and everything is great. I’m feeling better and stronger than before, and it’s going to show on September 8th.” Dawson

@raheem, GOD, is he like the Easter bunny or Santa, just a fictitious bloke from a book. What about bilbo bagins?

All I get from this article is how the writer wants to suck off ward, write something like this when he’s be around a while, I can’t stand maywether as a person but at least he deserves the praise!

To all of the haters out there, Ward is the reason to love boxing. He comes to fight every time he is in the ring. He is not a manufactured fraud of a champion-he has earned everything he has. He is a family man. And last but not least, he acknowledges GOD, who is the creator of all things. “HATERS WILL HATE REGSRDLESS” Thanks Andre for another superb masterclass!

I think it’s time Ward came out from under his mother’s skirts and start fighting away from Oakland. I know he fought Froch in Atlantic City however that’s the only time he’s been away from home and that’s really unusual for modern boxers.
There’s no doubt that Ward is in the top 10 Lb 4 Lb however I still have a few doubts about him. Those doubts would mostly disappear if he did something like give Froch a rematch in Nottingham – after all Bute had the bottle to fight him in the uk I’m sure it would be a doddle for SOG.

People mention Ward and Hopkins comparison. Lets not go there. Hopkins is a corrupt fighter. Involved in peds for a long time. Mix that with dirty inside fighting and you have a lethal weapon. I think Ward is more than that. Ward has a great record but he still isnt at Calzaghes level.

Dawson had nothing at 168…. He couldn’t take any of Ward’s shots (who’s not a big puncher). Therefore, I see this as a hollow victory. Perhaps if Ward and Dawson fight at 175, then it might be interesting. It was Dawson’s doing though… he challenged Ward at 168… He realized that was too low and then tried to negotiate a higher weight. However, Ward said no and this farce is what we got. Ward is a top pound-for-pound fighter at 168, but I think it’s time for him to move up to 175. I don’t think anyone can touch him at 168.

I don’t have a problem with Andre but he’s not exactly charasmatic and the constant praise of god can get a bit annoying.

Ward’s team have challenged Calzaghe to come out of retirement and face Ward. What a bunch of twats. Joe hasn’t fought for 4 years!!! Granted Calzaghe would more than likely still beat him, but it would probably be at 190

Its Me, Ernie

I wonder what it actually is that makes him so unlikeable to so many fans?
