It would be a punch fest for sure. My money would b on technique beating wild power.

You used the word “robbed.” Those decisions were NOT robbery. While Taylor was less effective he was the FAR busier fighter in the first fight. And if you didn’t know, pro boxing is not scored by the number of punches landed. In the second fight you have a stronger case for a Hopkins’ win, but then all three judges scored it for Taylor — and D. Ford wasn’t one of them. So just because Taylor’s career fizzled out doesn’t mean he wasn’t a force, and champ, for a couple years.

Posted July 4, 2013 11:01 pm

Taylor never was the middleweight champion… He got there by fraud.

Posted July 4, 2013 10:47 pm

Hogwash…. You are blind… Look at the punch stats for both fights…

Hopkins landed more and harder punches in both fights and was the aggressor in both… Duane Ford was called before the boxing commission for his miserable scoring in the 1st Hopkins-Taylor fight… He gave Taylor a round Hopkins absolutely dominated, the 12th of the 1st fight.

Duane Ford also had Bradley beating Pacquiao.

Posted July 4, 2013 10:46 pm

You don’t become the middle weight champ, something Taylor was, without skills. And for the record, Hopkins was not robbed in his fight with Taylor, he was beaten by Taylor. Yes, they were close fights, but Hopkins lost them, both.

Posted July 4, 2013 10:19 pm

Jermain Taylor is another guy who lacked fundamentals… Hopkins was flat out robbed in the Taylor fights — and every younger guy Taylor fought, who was any good, beat him into the canvas.

Taylor had no stance, jab, rhythm, defense, or footwork… Wright also beat him… He wouldn’t have gotten through the 1st round with GGG.

Im just happy great fights are now being made

Posted July 3, 2013 11:57 am

I`ve got mixed feelings on Froch’s wide punches. Because he isn`t that fast he doesn`t tend to land all that cleanly until he has someone physically drained, or unless he is throwing multiple punches.

Sometimes it looks like a bit of a percentage play to me – a couple of clubbing shots at least partially landing putting him in a better position that missing the straight shot.

It was noticable vs Taylor in the later rounds that Froch actually did a little better when he seemed to deliberately loop his right hand round a little more, simply be dint of where Taylor kept his gloves.

There is a saying in rugby that a kick is only as good as the chase – which is essentially referring to how the effort put into following up a technical aspect can determine how well the technical aspect actually comes out.

That is a terrible sliced kick doesn`t have to be the end of the world if your team are on it like starving wolves.

My analogy would be that Froch’s kicks aren`t always good, but his chase ALWAYS is.

He`s a hard guy to punish, since his follow-up is so committed.

OMG people please, please check yourselves!! GGG has still to beat anyone approaching elite level and you want to put him in with a proven 12 round, elite level, battle-hardened warrior like Froch?!?! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of GGG and look forward to his career with relish but he hasn’t yet beaten the best at MW yet so throwing him in with Froch makes no sense. Yes he’s looked mighty impressive so far and I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to great things if he keeps his head on straight but one thing at a time surely?!

Posted July 3, 2013 4:11 am

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Froch is really good boxer, but has limitations with his speed and fundamental technique. He tends to throw round-house windmill shots and would get outboxed by a few speedy, elite MWs with straight laser-like punching.

That being said, I like to watch him fight and appreciate his will and determination to perform at a level that is really beyond his natural physical abilities. He would lose to Ward again in a re-match, probably by decision. And 3G would simply expose all the technical flaws in his defensive game, eventually stopping Froch in brutal fashion — much to the surprise of his loyal British fan-base.

However, I do admire his alias/handle “The Cobra” and think the snake design on this trunks is bass ass! But if I were CF, I would definitely put the Cobra on the front-center of my trunks — directly over my package. (I believe it would have a subliminal, hypnotic affect on some of the more down ‘n dirty hoes, who’re watching with their boyfriends…LOL)

Posted July 3, 2013 2:06 am

Fair enough. I wouldn`t direct kids to follow videos of Froch to learn fundamental skills, but at world level I`d reserve the word terrible for one trick ponies who never outboxed a guy in their lives like Miranda, Juan Diaz etc

Posted July 3, 2013 1:42 am

Maybe “terrible” boxer is too strong a word… Strictly as a boxer, Froch is not on the level of Golovkin, Ward, Mayweather, Canelo, Rigondeaux etc.

Posted July 3, 2013 1:04 am

Great fight. I would love to see it. I would hope Froch came out and put on a Pascal-esque performance. I hate that the Cobra gets called crude. The dude can Box in the right situations and has proved to be solid on pure skills and defense.

GGG can’t get the fights he wants at weight. He can get more money and recognition one class up. Nobody can really complain either as almost all of GGG’s last opponents rose up to meet his challenge and there is nobody with punching power the GGG’s is.

Posted July 2, 2013 11:50 pm

Carl Froch – Bronze medallist at World championship, boxed the sting out of Pascal first time (Hopkins and Dawson didn`t), boxed Abraham into submission, terrible boxer?

You don`t have to like his style but Froch hasn`t achieved what he has by being a terrible boxer.

It isn`t the primary tool in his box, but it is there and it isn`t terrible.

Posted July 2, 2013 10:55 pm

The middleweights are much better than the super middleweights…

You have Grennady Golovkin… Sergio Martinez… Peter Quillin… Martin Murray… and a few coming up… Murray has also challenged Froch to fight, and you know Froch is not going to risk that fight.

At super middleweight you have Ward, who’s been on the shelf with injuries for a long time… and tired old guys who are terrible boxers like Froch and Kessler… Andre Dirrell looked very promising but has taken a powder.. Edwin Rodriguez can’t carry the division all by himself.

Posted July 2, 2013 3:08 pm

Gaz – it’s HBO that want GGG for Froch or don’t you follow the boxing news?

Posted July 2, 2013 2:22 pm

only a fool would completely write off Froch’s chances against GGG, the man consistently finds ways to pull it out the bag despite his flaws

Posted July 2, 2013 1:47 pm

Froch gone down in my estimation. To all those that said he’d duck Hopkins and Cleverly at a catchweight or let alone LHW or duck anyone that would pose him problems stylistically I say….

I was wrong and you were right. Not only that but he’s looking to fight a MW now.

If Froch wouldn’t move up or even do a catchweight with a heavier guy the least he can do is give GGG a catchweight.

Lets be rank here – GGG biggest test is Macklin, the MW are nowhere the level of the top SMW guys. For me GGG still needs testing and he may not get that at MW but at SMW we know nothing about him.

Chin, stamina, if his power carries. Isn’t he like 3 inches shorter than Froch as well?

Posted July 2, 2013 12:40 pm

Bobby da boxer

GGG is willing to go down Mayweather’s weight so Froch should be willing to go down to GGG’s weight

Posted July 2, 2013 10:53 am

Anony… Yes… Ward beat Froch much worse than the scorecards… Some crook was behind the scenes trying to rob Ward if the fight were anywhere close and disputable… It was a runnaway but Ward barely squeaked by on the scorecards of the corrupt judges… Everyone knew who won the fight.

It was very similar to the way Froch took care of Kessler… He beat MK clearly and convincingly, by at least 117-111 … You’ll recall that Ward, only 20 fights into his career, beat Kessler every single round by a wide margin … and stopped him after giving him the beating of his life.

That won’t happen when Ward faces Golovkin, who is very skilled, smooth, and powerful. The fight will be highly contested, but GGG will win.

Posted July 2, 2013 10:45 am

Took the time to track GGG’s bouts on youtube. You can see the improvements over the years. This guy is no fluke, no hype. A student of the game that came through the ranks. Solid background. Very intelligent in the ring. We now have to wait forever to see a worthwhile matchup.

Posted July 2, 2013 10:40 am

Eddie must be talking out his ass here… no way he puts Carl in with GGG. Golovkin would wreck Carl, and I mean WRECK him bad!

Posted July 2, 2013 10:40 am

Barlow: Glad to see someone on here is proceeding on Golovkin with a touch of caution! He’s a very exciting and powerful looking fighter and I’m definately a fan but some of the comments on here about how he could knock-out King Kong and Godzilla on the same night are ludicrous!! A few years ago I thought Kelly Pavlik was gonna be the next big thing but that never turned out to be the case. I look forward to watching Golovkin’s future fights but we’ll simply have to see how he develops and see him in with better fighters. He’s flavor of the month right now which is fine but talk of him KO’ing Froch is ridiculous. It’s a big step up both in weight and class!!!

Posted July 2, 2013 10:25 am

TARK,Froch is about 18 month older than Kessler,Kessler 3 fights (13rds) in three years so he was inactive and he did just squeak by Kessler,in no way was that a convincing win,if his so called granit chin keeps getting hit by GGG he WILL get KOd if ward hit harder he would have KOd Carl coz he hit him at will

Broner is rated in the top 10 p4p by ring magazine just like guerrero was before his match with Floyd. Ring’s ratings for p4p are bogus. BoxRec had Broner at a more realistic #21. Ring rates these guys and leaves Vitali off, don’t believe them (Except you boxtra).

Haimat – What you basing that on though. I can say Mayweather is a fighter who comes alot once a decade, and Ward, Jones Jnr. was before that. How because of their records. Theres substance in the argument. How many fighter have people tipped in the past to reach the same level as these guys but have failed. More fail than make it.

Posted July 2, 2013 6:37 am

Another comparison which I’ve heard from posters and Andre Ward is Golovkin and Abraham and Miranda. That’s also an unfair comparison. Golovkin is the whole package, the footwork, the boxing skills, the experience, ring intelligence, the works! Abraham, Miranda and Pavlik are huge punchers but with limited skills and limited experience.
Golovkin is one of those fighters that come along every decade. He’ll continue to be avoided as the plague which is unfortunate for all us fans.

Again though Geale or Barker, their hardly world beaters are they. Bar Martinez the middle weight division is very weak IMO. If you compare the top middles to the top welters and top Super middles theres a huge gulf in skills.

Posted July 2, 2013 6:25 am

boxing barlow, Froch is no bum. He’s a great 168 fighter, second only to Ward at this moment.
Broner is just a prospect and IMO not an exceptional prospect but just another, on par with Andre Berto when he was undefeated but less explosive.
Golovkin on the other hand has fought decent opposition and Macklin is a solid fighter. He beat Sturm which you some how forgot to mention. Golovkin treated him like an amateur. He has shown that he’s the top contender at middleweight. The fact that Golovkin is coming off the most impressive amateur career right now apart from Rigondeaux is a major factor of ranking him highly.
All the fighters you mention are Super middleweights. Golovkin is a small middleweight. I do think GGG would beat most of them but it’s not fair to compare fighters from different weight classes. The only fighter I think would beat GGG is Ward.
I think we’ll see some of these fights in the near future since GGG can’t find opponents at 160. I don’t think he’ll be as dominant at 168. Weight classes exist for a reason and he’s a small guy.

I finds the extreme comments on here laughable, and most on here expose their lack of understanding regarding boxing and their blind loyalties to their particular favorite fighters. Anonymous calls Froch a bum! LOL! Froch a bum? The guy has beaten every super middleweight outside the exceptional Andre Ward. It would be like calling Hearns a bum because he was beat by Hagler. Get real man. Also what exactly are people basing their assessment of GGG on? Macklin is the best fighter he has fought to date. Jamie Moore was able to KO Macklin so that gives you some indication of the step up in level from a fighter who has been KO’d at domestic level to Froch who has NEVER been KO’d and has fought probably the joint best pound for pound fighter on the planet currently. Froch’s resume is exceptional and I would say Ward, Bute, Abraham, Kessler, Dirrell, and Taylor are all at least a level above Macklin. How good is GGG’s chin? We have no idea, as again he’s been in with nobody with the skills to get to it. We all love boxing and therefore we should all applaud GGG’s style and what he has achieved in the sport so far. But the reality is we all knew Ward was gonna beat Froch because Ward has been taking a part other A level fighters left right and centre. A lot of people on here were shouting that Bite was going to take apart Froch. At the time I asked, why? Who has he fought at Froch’s level to demonstrate he can beat a Carl Froch? The answer was no one, and that’s why my money was on the proven Carl Froch. And that why my money again would be on the proven Carl Froch . When he’s blasted out a Kessler, a Ward, a Martinez then come back and look at it. But at the minute we are going in fairly blind as GGG is still relatively unproven.

The P4P list is a complete and total JOKE if Broner is on it. Just scratch the whole list– it’s purely subjective hypothetical garbage right now,

Posted July 2, 2013 5:22 am

The p4p list is a joke. Broner is on it. It’s common knowledge that GGG will beat Martinez, still GGG is nowhere to be found and Martinez is #3. Broner barely got past Brooklyn’s second best welterweight Paulie and he’s #7 or something. The list is a joke. Holds to resemblance to the real world.

Tark is a typical big mouth Brit, just like all British fighters, he was watching a different fight in the froch-Ward fight to evryone else. Ward beat that overated bum. in every department of the game anyone who isn`t british watching that fight will noticeFroch just like he did against old man Johnson and abraham was running all night, i just loved it when Ward smashed that beak nose. There was only 1 fighter holding in that fight, and that was Froch. Ward won every round. Foch ius the most unskilled fighter calling himself a champion.British as he is, he will always find an excuse when he loose. Fatton wrote the book”excuses, and the whole of britain brought it.

Apparently the IBF have ordered Froch to defend against George Groves. Personally I believe that as WBC #1 contender @ 168Lb Groves would be better off taking on Bika & if successful then fight Froch with a 50% split. Froch should fight Stieglitz next followed by Ward!

Posted July 2, 2013 4:07 am

Ward’s grab, hold, and head action game won’t work with GGG…

Grennady stays in your face.. The first shot he hits you with is explosive.. You tend to cover up rather than grab.. GGG has a devastating liver shot.. a brutal overhand right… A savage short left hook… a drilling jab… and tricky uppercuts … He keeps the pressure on and forces you to throw.. As each round passes he amps up the pressure until you’re ready to be cooked.

Posted July 2, 2013 2:38 am

Both Froch & Ward would be excellent fights. Froch only knows one way to fight. He will trade with GGG and get busted up bad. Ward should be stronger and will probably stick his head and shoulders in GGG’s face all night and wrestle him inside. The question is: how does GGG handle this sort of “old school” (DIRTY!) stuff.

Posted July 1, 2013 11:25 pm

I’d like to see see GGG fight someone a little below Froch before I say yeah. Besides, why would Golovkin want to just rush up to super middle when he could sweep out the middleweight division first. HBO would definitely force a fight with Geale if Martinez weaseled away from a fight with Golovkin. Martinez may just retire, but Golovkin could sweep up the titles regardless. The only unification that would be tricky would be with Quillin (who just has a damn belt that was stolen from Martinez anyway). Then again, he’s not a great as he plays himself and is bound to lose his title to the first guy who chooses to outbox him rather than trade.

Posted July 1, 2013 9:57 pm

….. “Carl squeaked by a inactive past his best Kessler” …

Kessler is younger than Froch … and even Kessler said he was a better fighter than for their 1st encounter … and had the best training camp with best sparring he ever had in his life.. He left no stone unturned.

And Forch didn’t squeak by… It was a clear and convincing victory.

Posted July 1, 2013 9:09 pm

From Froch’s point of view I think you`d like to see Golovkin tear someone else’s heart out at SMW first to avoid downgrading the result if he does (and I don`t think he would) beat him.

People have fixed opinions on Froch because his style is idiosynchratic, it offends purists, and it looks wide open.

When he spanked Bute the first thing we hear is that Bute was exposed and always overrated – yet name a SMW outside of Kessler, Froch and Ward with a better resume.

People said the combination of Abrahams power and Froch poor defence was a KO waiting to happen. After Froch spanked him we suddenly hear that Abraham doesn`t belong at SMW – we didn`t hear that after Dirrell beat him.

If Froch beats Golovkin without GGG establishing himself a little at the weight the same accusation will be thrown at him.

To be clear though I think GGG beats Froch, but there is a big difference between the likes of Macklin and Froch.

Posted July 1, 2013 6:50 pm

I think alot of people don’t want to see Golovkin dominate. Therfor everyone wants him to move up in weight and fight much much bigger men hoping he will be ruined in the process. I think many see him as a threa to some of their personal favorites.

He is only a medium sized Middleweight. In fact he is closer in body type to 154 than he is 168.

Posted July 1, 2013 6:40 pm

Arthur Abraham looked devastating at 160 too. Froch took him to pieces.

Posted July 1, 2013 6:05 pm

YES, if he wasn’t fighting Canelo or some other top fighter at 154 (like a mandatory), he should vacate it or be stripped. I think he was headed that way before the PPV with R.G. wasn’t so great. So now he is facing Canelo.

I’m curious to see GGG vs. Froch first and then Ward. Froch first because it would be a brutal fight and it would boost GGG stock if he wins. And then move up to the technician Andre Ward.

GGG is very skillful himself. He is a thinking fighter too.

That’s at 168.

Posted July 1, 2013 4:27 pm

It’s not as ridiculous as the fans that love to brag about GGG beating up HWs. So all I said, if he was that good, then fight the HWs. After all, he is beating them up in sparring, right?
Klitschkos need competition.

If not, then lets stop mentioning it because HWs can get there ass kicked by lower weight guys if those HWs aren’t highly skilled.
Roger did it too in his 40’s according to Dana White.

Posted July 1, 2013 4:24 pm

NOBODY has a chance against GGG from 150 to 168, except Ward. Ward could take the fight into the gutter and possibly frustrate GGG into a loss. Runners do not have a chance against GGG because he stalks you down better than anybody I’ve seen.

Posted July 1, 2013 4:21 pm

GGG is a small MW and weighs 170 on fight-night, yet you want a fighter who started his career at 130, who has weighed in at 150 as recently as the ortiz fight, to fight GGG at 154.

Now is it fair for GGG to call out Floyd if Floyd has a belt at 154? YES, as long as GGG re-enters the division.

OVerall, all I am saying, lets not act like Floyd belongs at 154 and fighting GGG is fair if GGG can’t even move up to 168.

Posted July 1, 2013 4:17 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk:

He is willing to move up to 168 down the road. First, 160 or lower according to him.

He said Ward could be a possible future fight.

Robert A.

At 160 I think only Quillen with his speed advantage beats Golovkin. If he moves up to super-middle, it’s anybody’ guess vs Froch. That fight is too close to call – maybe a slight advantage for GGG – but only slight. As for Ward, you can fugetaboudit. SOG wins by early to mid rounds stoppage with no questions asked.

The writer should know that because someone is knocked off of their feet doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good chin. An example of a weak chin is when someone gets tagged, goes down, and doesn’t get up or gets up doing the old chicken walk. That’s a weak chin and Froch does not have a weak chin.

Posted July 1, 2013 3:56 pm

Hearn thinks Froch is some sort of super human,he is tough guy admitadley, but he has to be coz he is so easy to hit,GGG hits accurate and hard very hard,Carl squeaked by a inactive past his best Kessler last time,Froch has been down before and I believe GGG could not only put him down but out as well,if I were Eddie and Carl I’d let GGG clear up the 160s first and have no part of him. Froch will lose again against Ward if they ever fight but at least it won’t be by a brutal KO.

Posted July 1, 2013 3:35 pm

Due to styles I would say Ward would be beaten up by Golovkin, Froch would be a much better bet to beat Golovkin in my opinion.

3G is more than willing to fight at 168lbs and has already challenged Ward. But the rest of your comment was plain ridiculous and idiotic. He’s a small MW who’s simply too light to be at Light HW or above. The guy is trying to get Championship fights at 154lbs.

14 brutal stoppages in a row! That’s BIG POWER. Nuff said.

Posted July 1, 2013 2:50 pm

Groves could possibly beat Froch right now—but it’s a substantial risk. George is getting better fast, so I would match him with Oosthuizen… Abraham… Rodriguez… Anthony Dirrell… and Kessler caliber fighters for anther 2 or 3 fights before taking on Froch. Double G needs seasoning.

Froch is a good fight for Golovkin, but GGG has no trouble making 160. Why not fight Martinez in Argentina??? Quillin in New York??? Before going to England and flattening Froch???

Golovkin is the ultimate road warrior … and the world tunes in for the show.

GGG is a stone killer … and box office dynamite.

If Canelo beats Floyd—bring the kid on… No problem for GGG.

GGG would have trouble with Ward because of Ward’s skillset. Power can be taken away. What helps GGG is that he too is highly skilled. How skilled? Well, at the pro level, it has yet to be determined how high. It will be interesting.

It’s Great to have someone like GGG in boxing.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

What some of you guys fail to understand is that Ward doesn’t have enough power to keep 3G off of him. He has a lousy 53% KO ratio and most of his stoppages are due to accumulation of dozens & dozens of punches.

Ward is great fighter and I’ve always really liked him, but he’s NEVER been hit by someone with 3G’s murderous power. Not only that, but 3G also has the reach advantage over Ward and is only about an inch-and-a-half shorter.

Froch’s throws tons of wide, round-house shots, and his style is technically flawed in many ways. Sorry my British friends, but 3G would destroy him too.

Trainer Abel Sanchez says that 3G beats the snot outta of HWs all the time at their camp in Big Bear, CA. What were looking at here is a totally different breed of animal, fellas. And sooner or later, everybody on ESB will be forced to admit it.

Yes yes yes! Bring it on, what a war that would be. Froch is a star and if ggg could get a win against him he really would be making inroads towards a claim for pound for pound! But I wouldn’t fancy his chances, frochs chin is solid and his power is immense. At this stage in his career ggg is at a similar point to Bute before he fought Froch. We all though Bute was class and was going places but although he had some decent wins under his belt once he stepped to frochs class he came undone. Ggg has not fought at frochs level yet!

Posted July 1, 2013 1:29 pm

Ggg might do good against froch, but if 1 day ggg decides to go back to school, I’m sure my man S.O.G will be more than happy to take him there!

Posted July 1, 2013 1:07 pm

Clearly, Golovkin is still strong at 160. People want to see the division titles unified in a fight between Golovkin and Martinez. If that can’t happen, Chavez Jr. brings a ton of money with him when he fights. If he can still make 160, that is another big money fight for Golovkin. I don’t know why Gennady would look at 168 when there are better paying fights in his own division.

Posted July 1, 2013 1:04 pm

Hands Of Stone

Wrong on both counts there joekidd.

He’d be fighting someone bigger, with probably comparable power, a huge will to win and an iron chin.

GGG seems to like to push the action which would play into froch’s hands. I’d favour froch. He’s no b level middle or light middle…

Posted July 1, 2013 12:55 pm

My advice: GGG take the fight at 168; K.O. Froch and get another credible win to build your fight resume.

Posted July 1, 2013 12:52 pm

GGG is the star. Why should he be making the jump? Either way, Froch will be carved up. Ward is the only guy that will pose competition but GGG’s camp could be smart and insist that Ward meets them halfway.
