Do really anyone thinks a boxer like Cotto is done because he lost to two world champs, If he lose to a C or D fighter I think anyone should think that way. Cotto still can fight any of the top fighter out there.

Haha…. I come and read that people are STILL trying to make up excuses as to why Trout didnt win. Look Trout didnt land anything on Canelo and he got dropped. How in the heck can u all see him winning that fight? Its is unbelievable…

“. . . Trout didn’t really land any hard, meaningful shots throughout 12 rounds, which is why everyone — except for PEEJ and one other guy — knows that Canelo won” once again, Exactly. you can’t cite a single category and give the nod to Trout. doesn’t matter whether Canelo’s win was overwhelming. it was comprehensive. i stand by my position that Canelo’s win was no less dominant than Mayweather’s over Guerrero except that it was over a bigger opponent.

Not that K9 is a top challenger, just dropping some names. How about “Mandingo” Kirkland??? “… Trout was Dropped and wobbled several times..” True that, mano. And Trout didn’t really land any hard, meaningful shots throughout 12 rounds, which is why everyone — except for PEEJ and one other guy — knows that Canelo won.

Canelo will gladly fight any top 154lbs challenger they put in front of him, including Cotto, Lara, Angulo, Rosado, K9 or any other fool with the sack to step up.

“Fighters never admit to defeat unless they’ve truly been beaten” Exactly and why can’t being honest also be classy? i submit that Trout was being both. besides, simply watch the fight. closely. Trout failed to land a single meaningful punch and literally missed dozens. occasionally, in a single flurry. conversely, Trout was Dropped and wobbled several times. Canelo was putting in the work and completely outclassing Trout in every category: offense, defense, footwork, what’s left? other than the “shock” that Trout confessed.

The Question posed was “who other then Cotto would provide Canelo a bigger Trophy and Bigger PPV Event then a Mega Fight Vs Cotto???” We know the Mayweather fight is not going to happen unless Canelo agrees to melt down to 147lbs.. and I don’t believe CAnelos people would be that stupid… Who? Who will Canelo fight???

Posted May 24, 2013 9:56 pm

Squared-Circle (a.k.a. LionKing)

Trout openly admitted to being defeated in the post-fight interview because he was being honest, not “classy.” Big difference. Fighters never admit to defeat unless they’ve truly been beaten. When fighters do lie… they claim that they’ve won when they know they really didn’t. That’s the very opposite of what you’re claiming Trout did, and it makes zero sense. No sense whatsoever, sorry PEEJ.

Posted May 24, 2013 9:54 pm

No Trout was being classy which was awesome by him. Read or listen to any interview and he states the he though he won the fight. But he also said it was a close fight and it could of gone either way. He also says that the one judge needs to be investigated or something cause he clearly was not watching the fight

Posted May 24, 2013 9:10 pm

“Shock” was the word that Trout himself used to describe his encounter v. Canelo. he had zero objections to the final verdict by the judges. i will defer to the man who took the hits while missing dozens of his own.

Posted May 24, 2013 8:16 pm

Canelo didnit dominate Trout. That was a very close fight. I had Trout winning by a point. Like ice said before though that I also have no problem with Canelo getting the nod. I did have a problem with one of the judges scoring though. But since that fight was in SA there was no way Trout was winning unless it was by KO

Trout stole whatever value was left of Cotto’s scalp by handing him a consecutive loss. at which point, Cotto’s stock took another dip. i wanted Canelo to crush Cotto instead of Cotto facing Mayweather. i wanted the matchup instead of Cotto facing Trout. it’s now a worthless matchup for and a step backwards for Canelo. particularly after what he did to Trout, which was comprehensive domination in every boxing category. Cotto’s final paydays are v. Angulo, Lara, Martirosyan, or Thurman. otherwise, Canelo has already passed him by.

So who will Canelo fight that would be a better Trophy and PPV $$$ Money Maker then Cotto?? Canelo better wise up because he will miss the opportunity..

Canelo v. Cotto is NOT a September 16 PPV. particularly Trout dominated Cotto; Canelo dominated Trout; Canelo destroys Cotto within 10, particularly considering Cotto’s stamina threshold of 8 rounds. moreover, Cotto’s current ring-profile is less than compelling: 1) coming off two convincing losses 2) too small to seriously compete at 154lbs and 3) widely percieved to be damaged goods whose simply trying to collect a couple of final paydays. Mayweather ir Martinez are legit PPV. Lara or Thurman are free cable. Canelo v. Cotto is HBO After Dark.

Canelo needs to seal the deal asap before the window closes and he’s left holding nothing.. mark my words Both Mayweather and Paquiao will have a fight rematch with Cotto before they have a fight with Canelo.. Canelo should beat them to Cotto and if he stops Cotto convincingly he’ll have huge leverage against Mayweather…

Lionking – that’s a lot to take out of that paragraph.. why would Canelo want to fight in Brooklyn? park slope, one of the largest PR neighborhoods in Brooklyn, I know, I was born there… also one of the most desireble neighborhoods because of its diversity.. just google it.. If Canelo was trying to make this fight with Cotto why haven’t we seen or heard a single anything official from him or his camp?? He (Canelo) needs to jump on this ASAP and not let this opportunity slip by waiting on Mayweather to give in because as we saw in the Paquiao fiasco that is not going to happen…

I never said Cotto was done. I said he needs to get his confidence back. I said he needs to fight a high B level fighter to make sure he still belongs. Yes he gave Floyd a good fight. But the guy that fought Floyd was not the same Cotto that fought Trout. Now Cotto said he felt over trained, I believe him, he has never made excuses. If he where to retire now he would be first ballot HOF. I still think he can fight though

Posted May 24, 2013 5:04 pm

When you really think about it, if Canelo would’ve lost on the scorecards to Trout(as I felt he did), it could’ve been a good thing. They could’ve had an immediate rematch which would’ve been even bigger than the first fight. If Canelo wins the rematch with a convincing KO, his stock and reputation would be right back where it was, along with the experience gained in the loss, plus the extra cash earned in the rematch.

Public Enemy: Do you ever read any of the articles on ESB??? Didn’t think so.
Here’s the first paragraph from the attached article: “Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) is still trying to decide whether he’ll be fighting on September 28th or another date this year for his next fight, according to RingTV. Golden Boy Promotions booked the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for September 28th, hoping that Cotto will choose to fight on that date, but he’s still undecided.” Translation: Team Canelo is very aggressively pushing for a Cotto fight in Brooklyn, and Team Cotto is deciding whether or not to duck or take the risk.

Squared-Circle (a.k.a. LionKing)

FEARS: I slightly misspoke there. What I meant to say was “…Canelo is taking big risks to give fight fans what they want…” Fighting Trout was certainly a big risk because Trout was and undefeated champion. If Canelo would’ve lost, he would’ve lost his titles and his reputation and stock would have plummeted overnight. When that happens to a young fighter, their money-making potential also takes a HUGE dive.

Posted May 24, 2013 4:10 pm

SQUARED CIRCLE-I agree with some of your post, except the part about “Canelo takes big risks to give fight fans what they want”. He’s only taken 1 risky fight in his whole career(Trout), and that wasn’t a big risk, because he only risked losing in that fight, but there was no risk of being brutally knocked out and damaged.

Edd’s post has me thinking…. Over the past 10 years, does anybody have a better resume’ tham Cotto? Definitely not! I can’t think of one tune-up fight, or mis-match since the days of the Torres fight! Cotto is a true warrior and deserves the utmost respect.

Posted May 24, 2013 2:23 pm

Cotto is not a stepping stone but has proven himself a standup guy and great warrior that he doesn’t need anymore challenges or money…fighters need to retire when it’s time and not let themselves be retired by a lesser fighter or become a stepping stone….life is good and better if you have all your senses about you…..

Posted May 24, 2013 2:08 pm

I don’t believe Cotto is a stepping stone…Cotto is damaged goods at this point. Any further action in the ring is going to result in permanent damage to him. An exit from the sport would be best for him, the fans, and his family

Posted May 24, 2013 1:33 pm

cotto has fought the best however he has lost to the best also. He definitely needs a tune up fight to sharpen his skills n get his confidence back. A rematch w floyd is a terrible idea. Floyd will box more trade less and rip him apart! Canelo may ne too much for him right now.

Posted May 24, 2013 1:19 pm

Cotto is not done by a long shot as some of you fantasize. When a fighter like Cotto tests and continuously challenges himself by fighting the most difficult fights available as he has all his career, not fights where everyone and their grandma knows will win, then he is naturally bound to lose. When top opposition is fought, winning is not always guaranteed. But to Cotto’s credit, he has taken the toughest and most challenging fights of any fighter in the last 10 years, bar none!! The same cannot be said about some fighters who want fans to believe they’re ATG, the best or the top p4p fighter when all they’re doing is fighting fights that are not at all challenging, risky or dangerous and that they know can win. So no, Cotto is not done or shot. Another thing, least he had the testicular fortitude to fight Pac all while Pac was closer to his prime and not allow years to pass hoping Pac would fade.

If you mean lesser as not known very well then I can see that. But there are some decent fights happening that Canelo could fight. Cotto also has to fight at least a B plus fighter. He has to be sure that he even belongs which I think he does. I’ll tell you what should be done. Canelo should fight someone on NBC or CBS. I think he could bring in some serious loot, maybe even more that on Showtime. Have Floyd fight who ever and then next cinco de mayo weekend him and Floyd could fight on PPV

You’re right that Canelo did not dominate Trout. It was a very competitive fight and I had Alvarez slightly ahead — just like Yo Paulie and the ring-side commentators. I have no problem if Cotto delays the Canelo fight until he gets his confidence back, as long as he faces him sooner or later. Just know that Team Canelo is trying their best to secure a fight with either Mayflower or Cotto, so please don’t trash the kid for fighting a “lesser name” in his next bout. The reality is that Canelo is only 22 and should be taking his sweet-ass time, but instead takes big risks because wants to give fans what we want to see. Respect.

Dude Cotto just fought 2 tough fights in defeat. Let the man get some confidence back. And Canelo didn’t dominate Trout in any fashion. Heck I thought Trout beat Canelo though it was close enough to go either way. It may not be as huge a fight as folks think since Cotto has lost his last 2 fights. Come on now.

Team Cotto needs to man-up and face Team Canelo. Bottom line. If he’s a true warrior, he’ll give the boxing public exactly want they want to see — which is a legendary PR vs. Mex showdown — even if it means going out on his shield like Morales. Less than a month ago, a lot of you same cats said Canelo was just a overrated hype-job who was gonna get outboxed by Trout. And now the kid’s too dangerous for the legendary Cotto?? GTFO. It’s a HUGE $$$ fight and they should definitely do it in NYC because it’s also gonna be Cotto’s retirement party. (He’ll announce his retirement in the ring, then his fans will carry him outta the arena on their backs like a celebrated folk hero. Then he and his family will disappear into the sunset and never works another day in their life… living happily ever after).

Most of you here have it right. With the loss to Trout, Cotto completed the next phase in the lifecycle of a boxer, which is gatekeeper/stepping stone for the next up and commer. He could still be competitive and may even give us a nice show or two, but he has lost some of his luster and with his entire career being defined as that of a man with dignity and respect, the right way to go out is with dignity and respect. One last evenly matched fight against someone who will make for an exciting fight, that’s the right way to bring down the curtain on a great career.

Cotto has lost a lot credibility. He lost to Mayweather and Trout. It will be a good fight between Angulo, Lara, Smith, without the title. It doesn’t matter Cotto is not PPV material. Cotto-Alvarez won’t bring flyes.

There are SO many fights to be made, so why would anyone want to see Cotto beaten again??? If Cotto is really stupid enough to get into the ring again with Mayweather because he actually believes all the crap written about his last fight with him, then expect Floyd to really give him the beating of his life…worse than Margarito.

Why would anyone want to see the same old recycled crap again? Boxing fans are NOT stupid regardless of what Arum and the WBC may think!

Posted May 23, 2013 7:20 pm

Why does anyone want to see this future Hall of Famer continue to fight knowing his best days are past him. He like all other great fighters just don’t know when to hang them up. Look at his face every time he fights. More importantly, look at his wife and kids. If he keeps going he’s going to end up punch drunk and stuttering the rest of his life. Sometimes, boxers need to be escorted out of the ring. Boxing is too addictive, and at their level, it’s almost impossible to tell them to stop. All the match ups people want Cotto to be in are gret, but they should have taken place when he was young and great, not now. He’s going to get beat up, and then, and only then will fans begin saying he should have retired, poor guy and all feel bad for him. Not good, Miguel needs to retire now.

I’d like to see Canelo-Cotto. I think the fight will be most competitive than what many posters here realize. In regards to Floyd, I don’t believe he’ll try to mix it up again against Cotto in a rematch. He tried that the last time and got hit with some good punches. I wouldn’t like to see a rematch, as Floyd will outbox Cotto all night long.

I think Canelo-Cotto will sell and I also believe that Cotto has enough left in his tank to give Canelo lots of problems.

this is welcome news as long as Cotto does fight once more this year. Cotto v. Angulo would be a great fight. whatever skills advantage Cotto might possess is matched by Angulo’s undeniable punching power. risky bout for Cotto but a nice and realistic payday otherwise. Cotto was occasionally dominant at 147lbs (NOT 145lbs) and always formidable but he can’t compete v. the likes of Canelo who will deliver a particularly vicious beatdown should Cotto decide to take that fight. the only way Mayweather moves up to 154lbs is for the payday at a September 16 bout v. Canelo would provide. “Money” is only interested in collecting at 154lbs not competing. that effectively rules out Cotto. tough bout or not, who really wants to watch that again? moreover, who realistically believes that the outcome would be different? Cotto’s smart to keep his options open but it will hinge on what Mayweather decides to do followed by Canelo’s response. it may be time for Cotto to embrace his gatekeeper role at 154lbs and settle for the likes of Angulo, Lara, Thurman, or Molina.
