It’s hard to know wether Douglas was an underachiever or an overachiever. The contrast in how he performed against Tyson to how he did vs Holyfield just a few months later, it was like day and night, it was’nt even competitive. The physical tools were their he had the size, the jab and good movement to go with it, he just did’nt seem to be able to retain that competitve edge, that focus that the likes of Holmes and Holyfield have.

If Buster had lived up to his potential he could have beaten Tyson and Holyfield 8 days a week.. He was one Hell of a lot bigger and taller than them, and could move and punch as well as anyone from that era. He took a lot of punishment late in some fights that he won. He was guaranteed 25-million for the Holyfield fight—so he knew if he went 10 or 15 seconds he was still going to be paid. He probably thought he was working overtime when he came out for the 3rd round.

It’s not as if you can screw around for 10 years and suddenly bear down hard for a 3-month training camp, and come out of it the best you could ever be. Right after he knocked out Tyson he went right back to being Buster.

What a great fight Tyson vs Douglas was, a fight with real drama to it. It was a shocking loss for Tyson at the time but Mike did’nt give up the title easily that night. It’s a real shame that Douglas was’nt a more consistent performer.

BD was a one-hit wonder. Looked great against an ill-prepared Tyson. Then, went on an eating binge, got knocked down by Evander and didn’t bother trying to get up, just took the cash. I’d like to see him against James Toney in a pie-eating contest.

Ingemar Johansson was inducted.. He never beat an ATG Heavyweight, and had zero successful title defenses — just like Douglas, who DID beat a prime ATG as a 42-1 underdog.. So if Buster was ever inducted into the HOF I wouldn’t have any problem with it.

I find it interesting that in doing Douglas’s bio they mentioned that he fought Cobb, Page, Berbick, and lost to Tucker, but didn’t mention he lost the Heavyweight Championship to Evander Holyfield. Just “He retired in 1990.” Like after getting KO’d by Holyfield???
