By Vitali Shaposhnikov: With taking time off to look after his cancer stricken wife, Robert Guerrero’s climb back to the top of the boxing food chain has been taking too long. Guerrero is a tremendous fighter, with very high potential for becoming a big star in boxing.
A few months ago, Guerrero mentioned his interest in facing Floyd Mayweather Jr., to which most boxing fans responded with a condescending laugh. Of course asking to fight Mayweather Jr. makes sense for any fighter who not only wants a shot, but also the biggest payday in their career. That fight is illogical, and the result would be obvious.
Now, in an interview with RingTV (http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/173697-after-aydin-guerrero-eyes-knockout-of-reckless-pacquiao), Guerrero talk about how he would be a perfect opponent for Manny Pacquiao, and how strategically he could win that fight.
“I think about [fighting Pacquiao] all the time. The way Pacquiao comes in is reckless. He comes in a lot of times jumping in. Being a left-hander also, I really feel that he’s tailor-made for me to knock him out,” convincingly stated Guerrero.
What’s true is true, Pacquiao does like to jump in and use his powerhouse tactics in the ring. One thing Robert doesn’t seem to catch is that not only does Pacquiao do this with great success, but knocking him down has so far been only a dream for most. Could Robert sustain a brawl with Pacquiao? A lot of boxing fans noticed thatManny looked weaker in his fight against Bradley, but then again, every fight is different, and every chin can only take limited punishment.
“When Tim Bradley would get in there and just mix it up with Pacquiao, he threw some great combinations and landed some great shots. Just the hand speed that Bradley has, and with his short arms, getting in there with those tight, compact punches, you know I just liked that,” said Guerrero.
We all liked that. Unfortunately, a lot of those punches actually missed their intended target. It is true, Bradley did land some decent shots, but even those shots did not make any kind of a statement. The fact that they had connected yet absolutely nothing came of it says doesn’t add anything to Bradley’s perspective performance against Pacquiao if they ever fight again.
“I have done the homework on Pacquiao. I would use the long jab and go with a triple and quadruple jab. I would change my whole game plan. I would just continue to study him. I have a whole completely different idea on how to beat him. So it’s just about getting that opportunity to further expose him. From there, I would just go to work,” concluded The Ghost.
When reading this, one person’s words come to mind, and that person is Floyd Mayweather Jr. Everyone always has a plan on how to beat him, many tried, yet none succeeded. Same thing goes for Pacquiao to a degree, so what makes Guerrero different? Nothing at all, he simply wants a chance.
For now, in order to make a statement about his abilities, Guerrero needs to put on an impressive performance against Selcuk Aydin at the HP Pavilion on July 28, 2012.
