By Vitali Shaposhnikov: Manny Pacquiao’s legal adviser Franklin Gacal has recently stated that fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. should be team Pacquiao’s top priority. “I think the fight with Floyd Mayweather should be on top of the agenda when he meets with Bob Arum next week,” stated Gacal. While there are a few available options, such as Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley, many believe that the fight with Mayweather Jr. will be more beneficial in terms of finances as well as future fights for Pacquiao. Win or lose against Floyd, Pacquiao would not only collect a tremendous paycheck, but would still have the choice of whom to fight next.
“I think they should give the Mayweather fight another try. And if nothing happens, and there’s nothing more to expect, only then should they consider fighting Bradley or Marquez next,” continued Gacal.
Sitting down and trying to work out the details of a potential bout is a must for both Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. It is understood that both want the fight to happen, and both are ready to get the ball rolling. The only roadblock in the way at this point in time, is the financial distribution.
“If I take his $40 million offer, and no share in the pay-per-view sales, Floyd will be laughing at my back. That’s not the way to do business,” declared Pacquiao. Unfortunately, at this time, Pacquiao is not in a very good position to dictate the rules. Not to say that he deserves something much less than Mayweather Jr., but after his unimpressive performance against Bradley, his stock most certainly fell quite a bit.
I am aware that the judges had decided that Pacquiao should have been awarded the victory, but was robbed of that honor after his bout with Bradley. Still, most fans will admit that this was not the Manny Pacquiao we are all used to seeing.
Nevertheless, one has a questionable fight behind him, while the other is serving time in jail. Both fighters have their own troubles that they have run into. Hopefully, their next round of negotiations will bring about a positive result, and allow us, the boxing fans, to witness a historical record-breaking event.
