By Michael Collins: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr’s immediate goal is to snatch the WBA junior middleweight title from champion Miguel Cotto next month on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, Mayweather says he’s thinking of moving up another division after that to go after one of the middleweight titles. A fight between Mayweather and Sergio Martinez is something that Mayweather is eying. He’s not satisfied with camping at 154 to defend against all of the less than popular fighters in that weight class.
If Mayweather moves up in weight anytime soon he could leave behind possible fights against Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, both of which reportedly say they’re interested in fighting him. Mayweather has tried countless times to get a fight against Pacquiao, but it’s just never worked out and likely won’t in the future as well. A between Mayweather and Khan might be interesting if Khan picks up some fans in the United States. Right now, Khan is too much of an unknown entity with casual boxing fans and he has an ugly fighting style that involves a great deal of running, pushing off and pulling down on his opponents neck. Mayweather already said he doesn’t like the way that Khan fights, so that fight probably won’t happen unless Khan stops running and fouling as much in his future fights.
Mayweather has to get past Cotto on May 5th for him to have any serious chance of moving up in weight to fight for the middleweight title. Also, the fighter that Mayweather would like to take on for a title, Sergio Martinez, currently doesn’t have a title belt. He’s been trying for ages to get WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight him but he’s had no luck and the WBC hasn’t been helping Martinez out by not forcing Chavez Jr. to fight him.
